just returned from mallorca to shannon with ryan air. no problem on the way out but on the way back they targeted all the people with kids and tried to bully them into paying for the hand luggage.

What do you mean by bullying them into paying? Asking them to pay without even checking the size or weight of their bag?

    tony300+ wrote: »
it was like they were on commission.

Its reported that Ryanair staff at certain airports are actually making commission on each piece of oversized hand luggage, so don't be so surprised by this in future.

I've thankfully never had any issue with Ryanair before, but it does take a bit more preparation when packing etc to make sure you stick to there strict rules, if there is any way to charge you extra they will! I get great satisfaction out of never giving them that opportunity. Also I have the patience of a f*ckin' saint so those little things that annoy the crap out of people don't faze me at all.

If its such a problem why dont people just stick to the rules? Then again what would they complain about then....

it's not exactly rocket science, one small bag each within clearly stated measurements.
if Ryanair are cheapest for my journey I will use them no problem, they do exactly what it says on the tin.

they seem to be allowed a monopoly at irish airports.

It is not that they are allowed a monopoly, it is just that they are willing to fly to destinations for a lower price and others are not.

i will look at every option before i use them again.

Please do go use others if this is how you are going to carry on.
    tony300+ wrote: »
your missing the point. the bags did fit, and they targeted the people with children.

From what you said they didn’t fit when they asked you to check them. If your bags did not fit in the frame that is your fault not theirs.

Why? You were wrong and want to make them and everyone else pay for it. It is people like you that F*** things up for all the people that follow the rules properly.

Post makes no sense, I saw them stop a black person, that doesn't mean their targeting black people. :pac::pac::pac::pac:

I doubt your delayed the flight, if you delayed the flight 12 minutes they would have missed their window to take off and it would be longer than that.

I'm sure it's been said before on here (can't be bothered reading back) but you get what you pay for with Ryanair.
I personally do my utmost to avoid them as I dislike everything they offer apart from price, and as I can get airline staff tickets I usually manage to do just that.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 66 ✭✭many

And worse still, they were bullied by the Ryanair staff who acted as if they were on some kind of bonus to penalise passengers.

Unfortunately, the staff are paid on commission to catch people out like this, to sell cigarettes, lottery tickets, etc so it gives them a monetary incentive to be ignorant and unyielding.

    It's a horrible thing.

Oops, should have read the whole thread before repeating the commission thing, sorry!

But yeah, my boyfriend's sister worked there for about two years and she was paid on commission.

I'm sure they are on commission now.
I've seen them do this the last few months more and more.
And they always seem to pick on OAPs on their own first. Less likely to get an argument from them.

They accosted a woman sitting beside me at the check-in/boarding gate a few weeks ago. She told them her bag was within the limits, yet the box would not go over the bag. She refused to pay extra because her bags were within the limits, no matter what their box said. They got very snotty with her and were going to refuse her carriage.

A woman a few seats away took out a measuring tape, asked the guy what the limits were and he told her. She measured the first womans bag with the tape and it was a couple of centimeters in all directions smaller than their max dimensions.

She then offered to measure the ryanair measuring box for them to see if it was off. They refused and left on to the next victim. The woman got on the flight anyway.

Im carrying a rollup tape with me in future, because im certain their measuring devices are too small.

Oh my goodness... I'm going to be taking a measuring tape with me as well!

i know someone that visits italy frequently
he said the bag was put into a wire compartment and if it fitted into that area all was well
do you know what happens to discarded items - are they saved for those unfortunate bods so they may pick them up when they come home?
are people allowed to carry essential meds in handbag so the bottles do not break - (obviously some liquids here) would have letter from gp covering drugs on person
and does anyone know the policies they have regarding the less abled - i did hear that a group of blind people were literally taken from the 'plane and were told there were too many - in that case why did they get a booking and hence a ticket for the trip?
is it true that using bathroom facilities costs 1euro per visit?
    rumours abounding.........

The sort of airlines that offer those discounts won't be around for much longer. Ryanair all the way so the rest of us can fly to places for reasonable prices.

I hate people bitching about airlines. If you want better quality service you'll have to pay for it.

Anytime I have flown ryanair the plane was on time. On the other hand flying with aer lingus is like a game of roulette something's you win and get a flight on time. Others its delayed for hours.

Although ryanair does give "free checkin" or " free checkin baggage" neither does anyone else. You pay for your free bag with every other airline however ryanair makes it a choice

If you hate bitching so much what's your comment on Aer Lingus about?

Ryan air is a disgrace and a good reflection of everything that's bad about commercialism and the money grubbing that Yeats spoke about. Fear Air..

And you're absolutely entitled to that view.. It's just not mine.. as I believe that they have done damage to the transport industry and the qos of air travel..
As long as they stay in their niche market I'm happy to be able to avoid them.

    http://www.independent.ie/national-news/oleary-denies-calling-woman-stupid-in-boardingpass-row-3221640.html

I don't think the woman had any chance of getting her money back and since it is written in black and white she was at fault. But calling her an idiot? Or to say that all passengers who forget to print their boarding pass (while still paying handling fees for a job they do themselves) are stupid? There is a limit to how you can treat your customers. Even if the customer is wrong, you don't use that language. They are paying your wages

True the service back in the 1980s used to be far superior. Travelling to europe with Aer Lingus you were treated very well with food supplied, full baggage allowance. Of course you had to pay a months wage for a return flight and the return flight was half empty with a large amount of the other half being friends and family of staff. But you got a free microwaved meal!

Besides the majors I fly Air Berlin, Easy Jet, Monarch, Niki Air, Jet Blue, They are all low cost and far superior to Ryan Air.. But that's the choice one makes.. No argument.. But I have the advantage of living (most of the time) in a country of wider choice than Ireland..

Plus: You have to ask why an Airline (Ryanair are the ONLY one worldwide) charges 2.99 for an app you can't even do an electronic checkin on.. (or so I'm told)

They are a disgrace! I just booked return flights to England for 3 of us for 96 euros! Ba$tards!!!

All we have to do is check ourselfs in on time, show up on time and have carryon bag that meets their requirements? That is terrible!!! How can we be expected to do that. I am not going on principal. The BASTARDS!!!!

    I just don't get this.

I fly regularly with work on Ryanair, and I've never had problems with hand luggage, pack it, measure it and weigh it before you get on and you are fine?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 179 ✭✭Gary The Gamer

Ryanair used to be one of the best for hand luggage as they genuinely didn't want people checking in bags. They were offereing 10Kg whilst Aer Lingus were only offering 6KG and they never used to check it. People took the piss though and flights were getting delayed with stuff not fitting in the lockers so they've been targetting hand luggage since. Get your weight and dimensions right before you leave home and you will have no problem.

And you are welcome to use them. But I will not... They are the ONLY airline that terrorise their passengers (and employees).. Even when the luggage is correct you will see the pathetic queues of victims wondering if they are going to get stopped..and charged.. They even make their passengers fill out unnecessary web forms hoping a mistake is made so they can levy more charges. It is the naffist most disingenuous company around.. Sacking those through their third party company after several months of getting people to work for free.. Lottery tickets??? Trumpeting an arrival.. give me a break..I will never support them.. But that's the great thing about choice..:)

    Terrorise? Honestly.?
They give the rules as clear as day, everyone knows them & you agree to them when you purchase your ticket. Enforcing the rules is terrorism now?
If that's terrorism Ill take it any day over rip off prices.

Meh .. went to Greece there 2 weeks ago for 10 days.
Worked out at 80 euros each return for a 3 hour flight including a check in bag.

No hassle with Bags, just have ones that are within the dimensions specified by Ryanair, I don't know why you'd be wondering if you just stick your bag on the weighing scales at home before you close up the bag.

Comparatively speaking you'd pay more for the ICE train from Dusseldorf to Amsterdam which is about the same amount of time.

With the money we saved on the flights we were able to rent an Opel Astra for 10 days.

I agree that Ryan Air has brought down the prices considerably. However, they are not always cheap. I once flew to Madrid with AerLingus for 100€. Right into the main airport which has direct underground access to the capital. Ryan Air price was 219€ to land in Valladolid, which is miles away and has no direct access to Madrid. And this is not the only time it happened. Granted, if they hadn't started a war on prices, we would still be paying around 800 euros to fly anywhere in Europe. But they remind me of Tesco: cheap prices to start with, then when the monopoly is aquiered raise the prices again. And treat your customers like cattle.

Their policies are very, very clear, and it's hard to fault them. But even when at fault they won't admit it. A friend of mine booked her flight to Spain with them one Christmas. She arrived way within the check-in times. She was told that there was no space onboard and that she should have come earlier. She had paid over 600 € for the ticket, which she couldn't get refunded because Ryan Air denied that they had overbooked the flight. Thankfully, a group of likewise unfortunate customers took action and were able to prove that they had arrived at the check in desk on time. They finally got a refund, but no apology.

A few years ago, my mum came over from abroad with Ryan Air. On the way back, the flight was delayed but the lady at the check in refused to give her a rough estimate of how long it would be delayed. She waited 4 hours inside, and missed her train, even though she had allowed herself plenty of time between both. When she tried to complain, she was told to send a letter in English only, which she can't speak very well. So I sent it for her, and the answer was the rudest I ever got. That it was not Ryan Air's fault and basically to sod off because she had gotten to her destination in the end so why was she complaining, and remember Ryan Air is the number one airline for cheap flights. I couldn't believe they had the cheek to add some advertising at the end of that letter. Anyway, I checked the passenger rights and it turned out she should have received some drink and food and some compensation for missing her train. I sent that to Ryan Air, who never bothered to reply. After a few letters, my mum told me to leave it. Needless to say my parents never flew with them again

I wouldn't go as far as to say that I hate them, but it's like cheap meat: it fills you up but leaves a bad taste in your mouth and doesn't nourish you. I'd rather have less of a good thing. So now I fly once or twice a year max, and I take more time off in one go so I can drive or take the train to several destinations, rather than fly there every time. And with 2 kids under 5, it's much easier to fly with Aer Lingus. Or even Easy Jet, we had a lovely flight earlier on this year with them, they were very good to the kids.
