Original question already answered for ignorant OP.

Aons ago I was on a tram in San Francisco when a passenger started shouting abuse at the driver. The driver then announced that he would not be going any further until the passenger removed himself. The standoff lasted a few minutes until the clown alighted.

This is what should happen on buses here if someone is smoking or just generally being a nuisance to other passengers. Yes it would be a problem to begin with but after a while it would work. Also drivers, and I know its a stressful job, should make sure that nobody is standing if there are free seats.

Bus etiquette should be like office etiquette. Keep phone calls brief. Use your head. NOBODY wants to listen to you talking about any aspect of your life. Think of other people.

Music headphones were invented for a reason. So only YOU can hear the music not the rest of the world. Keep it down. Come to think of it there used to be adverts on bus stating same. Wonder what happened to them.

Do NOT do your make up or file your nails on the bus. That is disgusting and shows a lack of class and like above a complete lack of respect for your fellow passengers.

If you see an elderly person or a pregnant woman give them your seat.

In the winter do not open the windows. Yes this is obvious but again you would not believe the stupidity of some people.

All this is symptomatic of the lack of courtesy in society generally. Not everyone of course but it does go back to what is being taught to kids in schools. This could be nipped in the bud.
    Overlong phonecalls? That's a paddlin'.
Filing your nails? That's a paddlin'.
Opening windows in winter? You better believe that's a paddlin'.

And if it's Dublin Bus 78A you wave a battered piece of cardboard which is clearly a fake pass and then smoke and drink and annoy everyone

I'll gladly pay a surcharge to get STT on my bus

You also light the top deck back seats on fire with lighter and/or cigs. Observed many times. :o

Seen someone avail of the wifi on the Donegal-Dublin bus to log on to pornhub with a stranger sitting beside him and a child sitting behind with a clear view

This whole saying your fare and destination is a pain in the hole if your not from Dublin and are just up for the weekend or something. The drivers look at you like you've two heads when you don't know how their sacred system works.

I feel sorry for you if you think that having and using a car says anything about who you are and what you have achieved.
The truth is -mostly simple and full of complex people buy more expensive cars then they can afford just to "add" a little bit to themselves because they think they can impress somebody that way.. (usually just as simple person would be impressed by a car) and because they don't have anything better "on offer"..
    Sad but true!

Quick thing regarding the general consensus that I lack manners, I always say thank you when I get off at my stop. So I'm not that bad :o

Eating smelly foods on the bus should be added to this-girl always eating rice crackers on my bus and it stinks this place out, not nice.

Dont see whats 'disgusting' about putting make-up on while on a bus though? Different if its packed or whatever, but if you've plenty of room and a compact its hardly a vile offence? I see plenty of girls do it on their way to college/work in the mornings and I never think 'oh how unclassy! I feel disrespected!' ?!

Also opening windows in Winter-regardless of the weather, on a packed bus it can get very stuffy. In conditions like that, I faint (dunno why-just do!) so I have often had to open the window beside me on a bus in the depths of winter/crap weather, just to get a bit of air. Granted I always mention it to the person sitting beside me so they know and dont close it straight away, but wouldnt appreciate it being referred to as 'stupidity'. I need it open, you want it closed. Need > want.

Worst thing I ever experienced on the bus was a driver who would not stop hitting on me. Not in an 'I'm interested in you, you seem nice' way, more in a 'I'm a filthy sleazebag' way.

Was on a number 4 from Blackrock, having left my friend's house. I was the only person on the bus, sat down near the front. My dad called me to ask where I was, I said I was on the bus, was coming home from my mate's house and would be home soon. Conversation ended then as I hate talking on my phone on the bus.

Cue the driver shouting down to me to ask why I had stayed out all night. I said I'd been in a club and then a house party so it was safer to stay with my friend. He asked had I stayed on the couch or in my friend's bed. I was a bit shocked at this and said 'er, the couch.' His response was 'well come stay with me and you won't have to stay on a couch.' I gave an awkward laugh and didn't reply. Few minutes later, he asked did I like sex. I then told him to stop the fcuking bus before I called the police. Never again will I get a number 4 on my own.

I have a fancy shmancy bus ticket that requires no interaction with the bus driver. I still usually either smile and nod, or say hello when I'm getting on the bus though (unless it's in the middle of town and loads of people are trying to get on at the same time. I usually say thanks when I'm leaving the bus as well. It's the same basic manners you'd use if you were in a shop or some such, so no big deal. Also, if you're paying in coins you generally have to tell the driver what your intended fare is so they know what to print and whether you need change or not....

A while back I was getting the bus first thing in the morning on my way into college. There was about 5 or 6 of us queuing to get on the bus, all with rambler tickets. The driver was really cheerful (how, at 8am I'll never know) and was saying "Good morning" to each person in turn. No one acknowledged him back (except me of course, because I am brilliant :pac:). I thought it was kind of sad that they lacked such basic manners :(

When the bus is packed and you have a pig ignorant w*nker with their bag on the seat who looks the other way when you approach, and when you do finally get their attention, huff over with a face on them

Would agree with the majority of your points but surely it's difficult for the driver to police the nobody standing if there are free seats unless they have a live link to the top of the bus. One driver yesterday was shouting to get up the top as there were "loads" of seats up there. Granted there were about three including one in the already cramped very back seat but surely it's guess work at best on their behalf.

Regards not opening the windows, I'd rather have them open than be stuck on a disgusting roasting bus where you can't see out the windows with condensation. Hardly the healthiest way to start the day and I fail to see how so many people just sit there and leave them closed while the place is fogged out.

Most of them have cameras upstairs so can see if there's free seats.

I agree with the windows, but what happens more is idiots who are wrapped up in a million layers get on and open every window around them.try taking off some layers first! Plus take note of how warm it actually is on the bus, rather than assuming nobody else had the brain to open the window if it really was that warm

Got the aircoach to the airport one evening. Sat at a windown seat alone near the front until we got to the city centre when a young woman (20-24), came up from the back and sat next to me. She looked and me and in a Northern Ireland accent said "Sorry, I have to move up here a girl down there was annoying me", I smiled and shrugged giving a little laugh and continued listening to my music.

2mins later she turns to me and asked where I was from so I said "Well I'm am from Cork but I working up here in....
She begins to get up from her seat as soon and I say Cork and then interupts me and says "Sorry I dont like the Catholic Church" and then moves to another seat a row ahead and 1 across from me. I sit there mouth open and then she turns around again and said "I dont like the Catholic Church" and says to the entire bus "this man here is from the Cork supports the Catholic Church, I dont like the Catholic Church".

Everyone in the bus is now silent, including a young english couple in front of me and who keeping looking back thinking I have offended here. An elderly couple behind said "Chin Up Son". Eventually I turn around to the rest of the bus and give a shrug and and bewildered look and people smile back. A few make cuckoo noises.

It was the longest most embarassing and awkward bus ride of my life.

That's the best bus story I have ever heard. You think she was just bored, and wanted to mess with someone? Like those people who get into busy lifts and stare into the interior with their backs to the door? Not that I've ever done that..

Actually when I think of it, I've never taken a Dublin bus and probably will some day. Quite frankly they scare me. The drivers sound like utter wánkers who would eat the head off you for not knowing the price or having exact change. The buses sound like they're filled with scumbags the whole time too. Do they even announce which bus stop is which?
Im only used to taking Waterford city bus services and Waterford - Dublin bus service :(. Bestow your knowledge upon me ye Dubliners!

Getting the early morning buses in winter sucks when the place is fogged out, you haven't a clue where you are unless you have a window seat and can rub a hole in the fog to see out of. I got a car and it makes a MASSIVE difference to my mood, being able to see in the mornings.

Agree about the foods. In the U.S. food and drink are banned from the bus.

Putting on make up on public transport is a no no. Etiquette.

Regarding the windows. Its obvious I meant if its freezing cold in the winter and some idiot opens the window.

One time I saw a woman get off a bus and she pulled out loads of bags to get to her own and just walked away, The driver proceeded to close the baggage thing and drive away. The people in front of me banged on the bus for him to stop and they put the bags back in. Yer wan never even looked back.

Another time when I was about 15 my friends and i were being cool at the back of the bus when an aul wan came down beside us and started smoking, Looked respectable enough too. We would have definitely got the blame for that had the driver copped it.

The most disgusting thing I ever saw on a bus was on the first Arthur's Day on a bus from Dun Laoghaire to Dublin City. A group of girls down the back were screaming and singing out of tune which was bad enough but then they started using their cans to urinate in. Absolutely no shame, in full view of everyone on the bus.

A not uncommon occurrence on the 78a :(
