So you set up their ladies team AND they represent your area, yet you say about the club "It whets my appetite until I get over to Old Trafford" (in one of your previous posts0.

i know you won't get it, but in the eyes of many, that is the definition of a plastic sky fan. Though, to be fair, at least you're involved in your local team.

That club and some of it's people has also hurt me more than United have ever done. It's almost easier to not know anyone at the club and just watch the football.

Earlier on, the definition of a Sky fan was picking a successful club to support because they are successful. Now it's just to pass the time and keep the appetite at bay. Which is it?

It's the same. It doesn't change anything about why you were "taken by united". But it's worse when you're actually involved in a local team and they only "whet your appetite", whereas the PLC makes you actually emotional :D

Most plastics, in your defence, wouldn't even care who their local team is.

To you it's just a business. To me it's more.
I don't think we're gonna agree on this. Although I think we both knew that along time ago. :)

I am in your eyes, a plastic. You in my eyes, are tunnel visioned.

Anyway, I'm fed up of this. Gotta get my beauty sleep for tomorrow's big game against Chelsea where I'll meet my best friend who I got to know through the wonderful club that is Manchester United FC. :D

Sleep well, and enjoy the game. I have strong opinions on it, but wouldn't like to fall out with anyone over it. It's only a game and all that jazz :)

Sip-porters are the worst type of barstoolers!

I think the term barstooler just became redundant. I'm going to start saying sip-porter:D

Charlton identified right wing and striker as the two weakest positions in the Ireland team when he took over. He basically offered a pair of players who had tenuous links with this country, who were overlooked by their native countries, already in their mid-to-late-20s and playing for todays equivalent of a team like Wolves guaranteed first XI place at international level. Within in a year they were both at Liverpool. No doubt they were worth their places at Liverpool but likewise I've no doubt that getting international football also helped their careers both financially and in term of profile.

Also Liverpool already had a tradition of Irish players when they signed Aldridge/Houghton. They already had Jim Beglin, Ronnie Whelan, Steve Staunton, Mark Lawrenson and Brian Mooney on their books when they signed Aldridge/Houghton so I don't know what point you're trying to make there.

Same here, what's your point? Houghton and Aldridge made their debuts early under Charlton, Houghton in the defeat to Wales in Charltons' first game, both as Oxford United players.

Sheridan was a lovely player, really liked him, big fan of that type of player, but he'd be a bit of an Andy Reid type player now! The reason Sheridan never played for a Liverpool, Forest (was signed but wasn't good enough) or United then was he wasn't good enough. Wonder why Sheridan joined Forest?

Aldridge and Houghton chose Ireland when it wasn't fashionable.

Oxford were very nearly relegated the season Liverpool signed those 2.

What exactly is your point? Players use getting picked for international teams as a means of progressing their career? I'm stunned at this revelation.

Good, it was a joke after all.

For the record I personally don't use the term "barstooler"

My point was to state that some non-Irish players choose Ireland as their first choice and that others do not. I followed this up by giving example of non-Irish players who had Ireland as their first choice (Sheridan) and non-Irish players who chose Ireland simply because it suited them at that particular time (Aldrige/Hougton). It's the entire content of my three line post a few pages back.

So back to my initial quesiton which what's your point anyway? I didn't even mention Oxford or Daglish in my first comment and yet you decided to drag it off in that direction for no particular reason. That makes absolutely no difference to what I was originally saying. Whether they got to Liverpool because of Ireland or not their intention of playing for Ireland was to promote their own careers rather than any sense of patriotism or loyalty to this country.

Mytwo cents eh:), I've followed Cork City FC since I was 6 because of my Dad, been to games every season since ranging from about 5 to all depending on work and such, they'll always be number one to me, follow Celtic because of my Grandad and Dad, been once, follow all the games, my Grandad supported Liverpool so while growing up he got me into supporting Liverpool, been over twice, played GAA with my local football team so I naturally support Cork in the hurling and football, played rugby for two years with Cork Con so obviously support them and was fecking delighted with the win over Aussieland, support Munster all the way, I've always had a soft spot for Barcelona playing soccer, same goes for Fiorentina and PSG in France, love Ireland winning in anything, don't like England winning in anything mainly because of attitude, I'm in no mood for people who can't understand this so just **** off. I love sport.

Grand, now we are getting somewhere, we are back at your initial post. How do you know Houghton didn't pick Ireland as his first choice?

As for Oxford and Dalglish, you mentioned Houghton and Aldridge and how they picked Ireland to progress their careers, you follow? Their progression was.....................................

This I understand. I understand having connections to teams in other countries. But unlike yourself most people in this country don't harbour the same affection for their local clubs, which you do on multiple levels. moreso than myself I must say.

I've heard both on record as admitting it. I can't remember the exact source for Aldridge but you can hear Houghton saying it on "Que Sera Sera, Official Irish World cup 1990" (you can find a d/l if you look under that name).

It's an irrelevant discussion. For one thing in most cases you qualify for a pay bump merely for qualifying as a full international player so that's a progression in itself. Obviously international football can put you in the shop window and competing against top international teams is only going to help your profile and experience leading to you becoming a more valuable and sought after footballer. I'm sure Aldridge and Houghton gained more from three trips to Brussels, Glasgow and Sofia than they did in an entire season at Oxford for instance.

I brought up that their intention was to progress their careers which is relevant. The details of that the progression are irrelevant. If you want to know those then do your own legwork.

Can you give me some type of link to start of?

Aldridge isn't in doubt, the accepted wisdom is it was an FAI accident discovering him. Houghton is what I'm interested in.

Yet Sheridan's wasn't? You made the claims, I'd hope you'd have something to back it up or are you keyboard warrioring?

Or what? Is that your entire approach of your argument? Prove this, prove that! These are things I've seen and read some maybe even 15+ years ago in print. You can believe them or not but I don't work for a newspaper and I haven't the time or interest to go finding sources for you. Prove me wrong if it bothers you so much.

    Wtf?

Unless it is a porn site or has objectionable material, link away? LOL. .

We all are asked to provide links now and again, it happens when posters want to know another poster isn't bull****ting. You know this information, it's common manners and decency to share this information on a discussion site!

I want to see the information and will change my opinion if it says what you think it says. You have the information. Just share it and discuss! It would be rude not to!

Nice try. I realise you're trolling me and trying to bait me into posting links but it's not going to work. Please don't assume that because you've been here 4 years and I've been here 4 minutes that you have the edge. If you really want to find that file then it'll be easy enough for you to get it.

    Right.

You were doing ok for a while but then you got greedy.

Like I said if you want the file then a resourceful fella like yourself will have no problem finding it.
