Not many here were born with a large wad of prize bonds in their mouth, to mix my metaphors. I suspect the majority have bonds as a result of hard work and diligent saving, combined with good fortune and fortuitous investing. In my case, apart from some early gifts and inheritances, I started by buying a small amount every month when I was trying to develop a regular savings habit. The larger tranches came later as a result of asset disposals and other life stage events. And like most people I've had plenty of financial challenges in my life. So people shouldn't be put off by the larger holdings here, instead I'd suggest that these should act as an encouragement to others to get started on the savings trail.
Well said, I couldn't put it better myself.

I realise that the change in overall fund value is due to a combination of purchases and sales. But I thought people might be interested in new sales over the past few years since I first purchased my prize bonds. I have tracked this by looking at the serial numbers of the new bonds that I have received each time I've had a win.

Hey abff. Formatted this as a table for you to make it easier to read. Hope I haven't introduced any errors as I had to parse the data.

    Thanks Hibernicis

I tried to format it as a table but didn’t know how. It was coming from a spreadsheet. Is there some software I can use to format it so that it will appear as a table on Boards?

    Hi abff,
I'm sorry to say that I'm looking at your figures and I can't really make head nor tail from them
Could you explain your how you came about them, I know your using the SN of your winnings to calculate but can you give us a bit more info

I did a few calculations of my own using 3 dates in 2020 from your figures, 01/01/20, 01/04/20 and 01/05/20 and here's what I came up with**

Bond fund on 01/01/20 was €3,654,960,000
Bond fund on 31/03/20 was €3,747,880,000
Which is a growth of €92,920,000, now divide that by 64 working days (presumably NTMA only work Mon to Fri) gives a daily growth of €1,451,875.00 which equates to 232,300 new bonds PWD

Bond fund on 31/03/20 was €3,747,880,000
Bond fund on 30/04/20 was €3,794,160,000
which is a growth of €46,280,000. and divide that by 20 working days in April gives a daily growth of €2,314,000.00 which equates to 370,240 new bonds per each working day in April

One thing to note when using serial numbers to calculate the fund size your not taking into account any encashments so your figures would be gross while mine are net

**usual T&Cs apply to my figures

Its quite straightforward. You wrap the date with table and /table (enclosed in square brackets) and delimit the cells with | (Vertical bar)

Its very basic, so no facility for alignment, numeric formatting, etc. If you are any way adept at excel you can generate the code there using various formula to create and manipulate the strings. Note that the columns can be sorted by clicking on the column header.

The following will display the first few lines of your table (remove the *)
    [*table="head;width=50%"]Date|New Bonds|Per Day
    05/05/2017||
    19/05/2017|103,539,795|7,395,700
    02/06/2017|103,713,712|7,408,122
    [/table]

    displays this......

    Date|New Bonds|Per Day
    05/05/2017||
    19/05/2017|103,539,795|7,395,700
    02/06/2017|103,713,712|7,408,122

Better than holding cash in the bank, if you're saving for a deposit and don't want to risk it in stocks then why not, tax free winnings as well

If you look at my post, you will see that I clearly stated up front that my figures showed new bonds issued and did not allow for encashments.

Guaranteed 100% capital repayment. Plus an average return better than anything the banks or other deposit products are offering. As has been pointed out many times, these are bonds and the return is in line with what is to be expected from that asset class. Other asset classes (equities, property, dodgy oil exploration stocks, gold, bitcoin, tulips etc.) have different risk/return profiles.

Is there a limit to how often you can buy prize bonds?

    No.

You can buy them as often as you like, but the maximum permitted amount you can hold is €250k as an individual or €500k as a couple. If you automatically reinvest your winnings, they can be retained in addition to the above limits, but would have to be taken into account against any subsequent purchases.

Which is why I mentioned it in my post but it doesn't help understand you post
Can you please explain what you mean by your figures for example

    Date|New Bonds|Per Day
    03/01/2020|1,066,461,148|6,094,064
    03/04/2020|806,212,471|8,859,478

Is the date 03/04/2020 the day of the draw or the issue date of the bond you won??
How did you calculate the the new bonds figure on the 03/04/2020
Is the "per day" figure, calendar days between the two dates ??

So the only way to buy PB's is with your debit card correct and of course you are limited to your daily limit on the card.
Is this how people on here with large sums bought them - over weeks/months.
Seems strange that there is not a bank transfer function.

No. You can also purchase using a cheque or cash

Different banks have different daily limits. I have purchased up to €50,000 in a single transaction using an Ulster Bank Visa Debit card and €20,000 using a BOI Debit card.

    No joy, as #dry2021 continues.
The number of weekly winners in Kildare falls yet again to 166, down from the average of 210-ish last year.

    Congratulations!
Your saved Prize Bond numbers have won €100.00 since you last logged in.

Second time this year I got this message. And I go back to my last winner of 2020 to show how close the winning number are bunched together. It further disproves the conspiracy theory. All winning bonds bought in 2010.

    19 Feb 2021
Prize Bond Number Value of Prize
    MC928578 €50.00
    MN575446 €50.00

    04 Jan 2021
Prize Bond Number Value of Prize
    MN574043 €50.00
    MN573371 €50.00

The holders of that €20 billion never got criticised for their foolishness on the forums. At least not that I saw. Nor the other €80 billion earning peanuts with other banks, or the €16 billion which got zero from the Credit Unions last year.

It is only the poor Prize Bonds holders with their measly €4 billion that have been a target for the criticism.
