everyone, do yourself a favour and put your prize bond money in to trade republic or Lightyear and get 4% a year, prize bonds are just a lottery ticket that doesn’t win

    Yawn

    €75 for me today

  • Registered Users Posts: 603 ✭✭✭sportsfan90

After a bit of a barren spell it's 3 x €75 wins in 4 weeks for me. It comes just after reducing my overall holding by 30% so it's an unexpected but welcome surprise.

Very happy here. Another 75 win today from the same batch. Cant believe that I have won more this year on a quarter of the bonds that I held for the last year or more. 🤔.

Nothing for me. The €50K winner is from Dublin and another bond in that 1,000 won €75 in Dublin in February. And had a few other winners in the last four years, including one which is two numbers away from the €50K winner.

But nothing from April 2020 to July 2022 which would have been returned in this search if they existed. Meanwhile my 1,600 bonds (€10K) are still wating for a win since June 2018. That is the nature of this "Lottery".

    Winning Bond Number(s)

Draw Date Prize Value Bond Number Status

    29 Jul 2022 €50.00 AXY203024 Awarded

    05 Aug 2022 €50.00 AXY203894 Awarded

    10 Mar 2023 €50.00 AXY203959 Awarded

    16 Feb 2024 €75.00 AXY203306 Awarded

    19 Apr 2024 €50,000.00 AXY203896 Awarded

Why would you be wasting your money in 'trade republic or Lightyear' for 4% a year, you do realise you're losing money with inflation running ahead of that, why would you not put your money in Nvidia and get around 300% a year, makes no sense.

Reminder. Tracker to be removed in the next few days.

    Update on this @Hibernicis

As expected the replacement bond that I got after the partial encashment has the original date on it rather than April 2024. This presumably means that these bonds wouldn't be restricted under the 90 day rule. However it's possible that State Savings could come back and say that it's also 90 days within the issue of the new cert. I'd consider this to be unlikely, but I won't know for sure unless I happen to cash in the remainder in the next 3 months.

Just fyi for anyone else wondering about timelines. It took 13 days to get the refund into my bank account, and 20 days to get the new cert with the remaining bonds. This was all done using the postal method at the post-office. I've since signed up to the online service which presumably will be much faster.

As an aside, it's just as well that it took slightly longer than expected, as I won €75 from one of the bonds during that 13 day waiting period.

    @sportsfan90

Thank you very much for the update, that is very useful to know and exactly what I was interested in.

The timelines are also interesting. You're correct that the timelines are usually shorter for encashments initiated using the online system, however just like the manual system these tend to be unpredictable due to the vagaries of State Savings processes, staff and operations.

    Congratulations on the win !!

    2 x €75 for me today.

For the record, as the tracker is to be shutdown in the coming days, the tracker had today's results on display when I checked at 12:31, the state savings online e-mail notice didn't issue until 12:35. Although it has to be said that state savings online appears to be a somewhat more stable recently and is falling over a lot less frequently than it did in 2023.

Email to me 12.39 - it's a long time since I had 3 prizes! 2 X €75 within 1000 of each other, and another €75 just over 1300 away from last week's winner!

Nothing for me today. Dublin got the €500K, bond would be from April 2017. Also the €50K and 9 x €1K and 10 x €500.

Celebrations after Dubliner scoops €500k in Prize Bond draw

A second Dublin punter also won a tidy €50,000 from a Prize Bond bought in 1997

A lucky punter has won a whopping €500,000 in this week's Prize Bond draw. The Dubliner purchased the bond in Co Dublin in 2017. The winning number is AGX622993.

Additionally, a second Dublin punter won the weekly prize of €50,000. The winning Prize Bond number is BP640997 and was bought in 1997.

Is it just me or does the word "punter" seem wrong when used in the context of Prize Bonds?

Wake me up when it's all over.

  • Registered Users Posts: 20,553 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

Is it worth taking a punt on the Prize Bonds?

That is the headline in a 2022 article from the Irish Times. The Indo also referred to a 2023 winner as a "punter".

€75 euro for me today on my 10k batch, last win 2nd March on 30k batch €75 euro

Reveived email at 12.37, I can't seem to add my 100 PBs from 1980s to my online savings, very awkward, each individual bond number has to be added individually and then a form downloaded, while the Prize Bond tracker was much simpler, just add the bond numbers and you're done.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,437 ✭✭✭Hibernicis

If you are using the online form, you don't need to enter all the individual numbers in a batch, only the first number. State Savings will work out the size of the batch from their records and add the remainder. It you have a lot of batches missing (as I had on a number of occasions) I just sent them a registered letter (including a cut and paste list of all the missing batches/numbers form my spreadsheet records) and that sorted it out. It's a nuisance but you only have to do it once.

The tracker was just a memo and you could add whatever bond numbers you wanted to a profile, didn't matter who they belonged to, whereas State Savings online is an actual statement of your holding and allows you to cash-in any listed bond, so it's understandable that they are more thorough on this occasion !

Whatever search routine they are using to automatically find and add your existing holding is pretty useless. I've seen the hit rate drop as low as 50% for no obvious reason. This is a concern as solicitors and executors often write to State Savings as part of dealing with a will and ask them to conduct a search.

Thanks great information,.I've 100 bonds from 1980s AF AG AH AJ AK AL AM AN, some in batches of 4 IR20 some in pairs IR10 and the rest individual bonds IR5, probably better making a list and posting off with my SSCN number and let State Savings add on to the online account.

April count. The same 11 million bonds BFV to BGF in each of the 4 draws. Not counting a €500 prize won by BGC 26th.

Friday 05. 123 winners. Highest BFW & BGC 17 each. Lowest BFV 5.

    Friday 12. 160. BFW & BGA 20 each. BFX 9.

    Friday 19. 134. BGB & BGC 18 each. BFY 5.

    Friday 26. 114. BGE 16. BFV 4.

    Highest overall BFW 62 (17,20,14,11). Lowest BFY 36 (9,16,5,6).

    44 million bonds won 531 prizes. Average per million 12.068. x 52 x €75 = €47,065.91. Divided by 62.5 to get what €100K would win in a year with the same luck = €753.05. Nearest to 10 x €75.

The tracker is no more. I was able to log in at around 10 am 30 April, and the site was still running the "will be closing" message. But at 12.30 pm it is gone, and there is a new message:

IMPORTANT: The Prize Bond Tracker is no longer available. Customers can still check winnings using other features on the Website including State Savings Online.
