Last win was the end of October.

    In 2020 there were 279,241 €50 prizes valued at €13,962,050. 2018 223,382 €11,169,100. 2019 247,048 €12,352,400. In each of those years the big prizes got a fixed €5,280,000.

Applying the 2020 figures to the 0.5% of the total fund given to all prizes, the €50 prizes got 72.56% of that. So the ballpark 0.35% expected return still holds, but the actual figure last year was 0.3628%.

Taken from the 2018 and 2019 Annual Reports, and my monthly update in 2020 on the thread of the number of €50 prizes.

I’m curious, why have you 2 different lots? Why not just 1 big 70k ?

I made an initial purchase and then decided some time later to purchase another. Simple as that really.

Since our discussion about the reduced number of €50 prizes this month, I have been keeping an eye on the State Savings site. In the past they introduced changes on Sundays.

Among wholesale reductions to interest rates, the notional interest rate on Prize Bonds is coming down from 0.50% to 0.35%. The two €1m prizes are gone, but there are four new €250K prizes. The rest of the prize structure stays the same. We will see in February the effect on the number of €50 prizes.

Makes sense that they have reduced it to 0.35% considering the State can borrow at negative rates currently. To be honest I was expecting even lower.

mmm interesting(not a pun),i was waiting for something alright, can't say it's gonna affect me winning cos i'm winning f@#k all anyway!!!

quite like the idea of 4x 250k winners instead of the 2 million winners-make a difference to more people i think even though it's halving the big prize i know, good luck everybody(you're gonna need it!)

Technically it's a quarter of the "Bi-Annual" big prize but I know what you mean:D

Think it's about time to do a new guesstimate of winnings when the new rate is applied

    Should I feel more hopeful??????

Ah no ....Is it one prize of 250K four times a year i.e. €1 Million in total as opposed to €2 m? In my innocence, I thought they had split the €1m twice a year into four prizes to keep four of us happy!::eek::eek:

Had a look on the site. By Jesus, I know Ireland is often mocked for being archaic, and it’s state sites like this this that explain why. For anyone going to register for online purchases, don’t forget to bring your pen, printer, envelopes and stamps. Fcuk me they make it hard.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,743 ✭✭✭John arse

when i started in 2014 the rate was 1.25% now .35%,so three an a half times more chance of a win then(i think) big big difference!

Here is a list which I posted last August. I got most of my bonds in 2007 and 2010. I remember there being close to 10,000 €75 prizes every week, and that was when there were probably only half as many bonds in the draws as in recent times.

    2000 2.75%.
    2004 2.4%
    Sept 2007 3%.
    Jan 2012 2.25%
    June 2012 1.75%.
    Dec 2013 1.6%
    Nov 2014 1.25%.
    July 2016 0.85%.
    Aug 2017 0.5%.

    Feb 2021 0.35%.

That's disappointing, I'll have to seriously consider withdrawing now.

I had an old EBS book with about €16 which I decided to close. It was inactive for a few years, but not dormant. There was a small mismatch between their computer version of my address, and the address on the book. Various forms had to be completed, and new proofs of identity and address provided. It took six weeks and three visits to the branch before I eventually got my money.

Blame the lax regulations in previous times, which facilitated bogus offshore accounts and money laundering. Every financial institution is obliged to the impose the legislation which was brought in to rectify the previous failings. There was a time when a person could walk into a bank or Post Office and open an account with no documentation, not even proof of identity.

Was very surprised that this didn't happen on the October bank Holiday weekend. Long overdue, unfortunately.

I've taken a stab at the change in the number of €50 prizes, using the calculations from dub_nerd's spreadsheet on AAM, amended for the new prize structure. I have taken a baseline figure of €3,850,000,000 as the value of the total Prize Bond fund.

It looks to me as though the number of €50 prizes will reduced from 279,400 to 185,900, a reduction of 33.5%. So for every three €50 prizes you won in the recent past, you will stand to win two in the future. (These are approximations as the prize fund is based on the number of bonds outstanding and we can only guess at this number, but based on various posts by dxhound2005 I don't think it is too far from the mark).

Now let's sit back and await an outpouring of unasked advice on what we really should be doing with our money (precious metals, crypto currencies, various small time oil exploration companies, chocolate biscuits, the descendants of Arkle and God knows what else)

Oh oh, Prize Bond prizes being reduced in February....

    https://www.independent.ie/news/savers-to-be-hit-hard-as-interest-rates-on-a-string-of-state-saving-products-are-cut-40005177.html

"But from February the fund for Prize Bonds will be smaller for those who have them.

Instead of two €1m top prizes a year for those with Prize Bonds, there will now be four €250,000 top prizes a year. This is an effective cut of €1m in the top prize.

There will be 10 prizes of €1,000, and 10 prizes of €500. The remaining prize fund will be awarded in €50 prizes.

The new prize fund will be 0.35pc of the Prize Bonds total, which was €4.1bn at the end of last year. This works out at €143m in prizes."

I had an old EBS book with about €16 which I decided to close.

The Money Manager debit card that I have with them is non contactless. I would have thought that they would automatically replace the one I have with a contactless one when they became available.

I have re-run the numbers with the the baseline increased from €3.85m to the €4.1m stated in Charlie Weston's Independent article which vicwatson quoted. This increases the number of €50 prizes from the number I calculated previously. The revised numbers are as follows:

When compared to the .5% return previously offered, the number of €50 prizes will reduced from 304,400 to 203,400, a reduction of 33.2%. So for every three €50 prizes you won in the recent past, you will stand to win two in the future.
