As you aware, the decision was made by the International Cricket Council (ICC) board to reduce the competing number of teams from 14 to 10 for the 2015 Cricket World Cup, which Australia will host with New Zealand.

Following the announcement by the ICC, Cricket Australia Chief Executive Officer James Sutherland said he supported the rationale behind the decision

As joint hosts of the 2015 ICC CWC with Cricket New Zealand we are excited about delivering a world class event and we welcome the ICC decision to make it a ten-team event. Philosophically, CA is supportive of a merit-based competition where the public get to see the best sides playing off throughout the tournament so we leave the public wanting for more.

It is important not to look at this decision in isolation as the ICC has introduced some important changes that provide greater competition opportunities for associate and affiliate members, like expanding the T20 WC to a 16-side competition which is played more regularly.

Without knowing the background reasons for the decision, we are sympathetic to Ireland in particular who, if the rankings remained the same as they are now, would miss out.

"Our starting point on ICC Events has always been that qualification should be based on merit," a Cricket Australia spokesman told ESPNcricinfo.

"We support moving to a 10-team ICC World Cup in 2015 and longer term, support moving to ICC World Cups which are 10-team contests based on merit, [like] the top 10-ranked nations in the world. The ICC has discussed reviewing the position on 2015 and we will be an interested participant [both as an ICC member and also as a co-host] in that discussion."

Options include an expansion of the number of competing teams from 10 to the 2011 model of 14 or the more likely choice of 12, or simply the addition of a qualifying tournament between the best two Associate nations and the stragglers among the Full Members. Such a solution is clearly Cricket Australia's preference, for administrators have begun plotting the 2015 event with New Zealand based on a 10-team plan.

New Zealand coach John Wright joined the already loud chorus asking for a qualification process for the 2015 World Cup. In an interview with ESPNcricinfo, Wright said, "The World Cup has got to be about the world - they (the ICC) have to be sure they have got the ten best teams in it. No matter where they come from. Otherwise it's a nonsense. Surely it doesn't take eight years to sort that one out."

I'm sure they could, if their aim was keeping Ireland out of the world cup at all costs. I don't think the ICC and various boards outside the bottom two really care if Zimbabwe or Ireland play in 2015 (apart from maybe CA, who would get more gate money at Ireland matches than Zim matches). I think this decision came about for two reasons:

1. CA, BCCI, ECB and ICC all wanted a 10 team WC, with 9 matches guaranteed for the big teams.

2. They wanted this more than they wanted it to be an inclusive event. The only way they could get the smaller nations on board for a 10 team WC was to agree to it being an all full member affair.

I don't think there was any conspiracy to keep Ireland out or anything. They're just short-sighted, greedy fools. All will become clear in the fullness of time anyway...

The 2015 World Cup in Australia-New Zealand will feature 14 teams a change from the original ten-team format, which means the Associate nations will not feel the axe from the World Cup.

According to the reports four associate teams will feature just like it was during the 2011 World Cup. The decision to reinstate fourteen teams was taken on the third day of the ICC's annual conference in Hong Kong on Tuesday.

On Monday, the second day of the conference, the ICC's chief executives' committee (CEC) had recommended to the executive board that there be a qualifying tournament for the 2015 World Cup, giving the Associates hope.

ICC President Sharad Pawar has taken up the cause of the minnows by asking its Board to reconsider the decision.

Looks like the decision had something to do with requiring the associates' vote to push through with the changes in the rotation policy of the ICC presidency!

As earlier reported, some Members believe the stretch to 14 teams is part of a deal to build support for the last major issue for discussion at the conference: scrapping the rotation policy for the appointment of the ICC president.
Pakistan and Bangladesh - the two Members who were to nominate the next candidates for president and vice-president by the rotation system - are opposed to the change. In order to pass a resolution amending the rule about the appointment of the ICC chief, eight of ten Full Members and 38 of 50 Associates will have to vote in favour of the motion. That vote could now be a formality with the Associates being placated by Tuesday's decision.

The reason why there was so much anger was because they were not even giving us a chance to qualify. This is a lot more than what we were asking. I thought they would go for a 12 team format with 2 associates qualifying. TBH Zimbabwe should have to qualify as well.

The 2019 WC will go back to ten teams and the 2012 T20 World Cup has been reduced from 16 teams to 12 teams,

so we got more places for 2015 but lost them for the T20 World Cup, still it's great news...

Fantastic news. Keeps Irish cricket alive. Gotta make sure now that we dont mess it up by not qualifying for 2015, although its nigh on impossible to see that happening.

Also even though 2019 is 10 teams, it will be the top 8 ranked teams in the world plus 2 from a qualifying tournament, so at least we know what we need to do to get into it

What am I missing here, it only mentions division two teams?, when Ireland is in division one,

how do we qualify?, is it likely Ireland will be able to field all their county players for the qualifiers also?, we will need to put our best team out...

Looking at it again, is it the top 6 associates play in a qualifier with 1/2 from Division two and then say for example Ireland and Afghanistan qualify from the 8 teams, then the other 6 who didn't qualify go into another league with 3/4 from Division two and battle it out for the last two spots?...

Thats it in a nutshell and as it's a league and not knockout it suits us even better.

So basically we have to come in the top two between us, Holland, Kenya, Afghanistan, Canada, Scotland, U.A.E, Namibia?,

we really should be looking at topping the group, will it be staged in the English winter so it allows Joyce, Niall, William etc to play in the qualifiers, or will they be released anyways?,

we really need to put out the best team we have for these games and guarantee we finish top, failing to qualify really isn't an option ...

Our county players will get released as they are official ODIs. Very strong team announced for next weeks ODIs against Canada in Clontarf.

These could be just the games for Joyce to get some International form back and I hope he takes full use of these games,

so these qualifiers are official ODI's so all county players will be released?, brilliant news, I don't see us not qualifying if we send out the full team, also do these ODI's with Namibia and Canada etc, in the ICC ODI cup, do they count in the ODI world rankings?...
