On topic, I think that is hot air from ECB.
10 teams is a pile of my ass anyway.

    12 with qualification is good.
    It doesn't matter though.
The moment you attempt to devalue the premier competition in favour of matches outside that competition, you start down the slope.

Zimbabwe have just withdrawn an invitation to play us in Sept. Very interesting stuff.....#cricket

 I cant blame Zimbabwe. They are only trying to protect themselves but with them actually being afraid to play us, it shows how much of a farce this is.

    http://www.cricketeurope4.net/DATABASE/ARTICLES4/articles/000007/000771.shtml

'' Zimbabwe withdraw touring invitation to Ireland '' article from CricketEurope,

one of the main things from the article,

'' Ireland may have lost their place at the next World Cup but they could get up to 15 one-day internationals against Full Members each year between now and 2015 as consolation for their devastating omission.

That was the most positive result from Cricket Ireland chairman David Williams’ visit to India last week where he had a personal meeting with the chairman of the all-powerful Board of Control for Cricket India, Shashank Manohar.

“One of our ambitions is to increase our ODI exposure against full members to between 10-15 per annum and we received some support from full members to accommodate us. There is, without question, among all the Full Members chairmen I spoke to, considered to be very clear water between us and the rest of the Associates,” said Mr Williams.

What Williams did not receive was a positive intent for India to play a bi-lateral series with Ireland - they don’t even play ODIs against Bangladesh, their neighbours - but South Africa and, perhaps with their tongue firmly in their cheek, Bangladesh also give their support for increased ODIs between Ireland and the Full Members. ''...

    Yeah.
Who was it playing them when their vicious ****heel dictator had them effectivly partially banned from playing?

We are clearly better than them too.
If they want to get game, they should not be turning us down.

At least when they get their test matches back Bangaldesh will have someone to beat regularly.

I'm not surprised at all, it looked like Zim had no intention of playing us again after the Intercontinental cup game back in September, when they forfeited the Scotland game it was obvious they liked to think themselves a level above the Associates, which seems to be their reasoning again here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,025 ✭✭✭d'Oracle

    Rather unsporting and contemptuous.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 12,822 Mod ✭✭✭✭riffmongous

I'd say most Zimbabwe fans are pretty disappointed too, from what I've seen on the net most of them would like the opportunity to prove that they are indeed better than Ireland.

10-15 regular games isn't pretty good...

Were it ever to happen in a fantasy world.

Statement up on cricinfo with Bvute and our own Warren Deutrom saying Zimbo not to blame,

    http://www.espncricinfo.com/ireland/content/current/story/510923.html

Similar statement up on zimcricketforums (I'm actually a big fan of Zim on-field ;) ) , but at the end it says:
That being said, it must be noted that the latter half of the year has been deliberately blocked for our domestic cricket as we endeavor to ensure that all our national players are able to turn out for their local franchise teams and they cannot do this if they are called to national duty. Our long term strategy is to grow our domestic cricket and increase the spectatorship numbers for our local games. The people in Kwekwe, Mutare, Masvingo and Bulawayo will only support their franchises if they can expect to see players that they can identify. The greater the crowds the more likely the corporate world is to further support the game. It is our hope that in the future, with these efforts, we will have a domestic competition that is in itself financially viable and sustainable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,025 ✭✭✭d'Oracle

All that is fair enough I suppose.

    Bar one thing.

Are they Contractually obliged to play A sides?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 12,822 Mod ✭✭✭✭riffmongous

The A tours might be 4 day games maybe? Zim are supposed to be going back to test soon enough I think.

What bugs me is how they say they've closed off half the season for domestic cricket (which I think is actually a good idea) but how long would a few odis against Ireland take, a week? So at most they would miss 1 domestic game if they scheduled it properly.

ICC is reconsidering the composition of the 2015 world cup. Hopefully the criticism aimed at them has woken them up to the injustice.

Decision likely in June, hopefully common sense prevails, and Ireland are at the least given the chance to play a qualifying game.

Do we know which test nations are in favour in allowing associate members in or if there are any.

Considering, the test line-up is not being sought to be re-jigged or expanded, the countries that stand to lose out on the revenue share from the WC are the ones most likely to be against. Add England to the list as the better associates - Ireland and Netherlands - always would raise their performance against England and therefore are at risk from a results standpoint!

According to the fall out from Zimbabwes cancellation, they were in favour of the associates.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79 ✭✭DonRosco

It seems they were in favour of the associates if there was 12 teams allowed in the world cup. Once India / England / Oz told them there would only be 10 teams in, they were happy enough to vote for the 10 full member world cup. I don't blame them, mind - turkeys voting for christmas and all that.

That's certainly encouraging news at least. You might almost wonder if the ICC had some shame.
Time to step up any campaign I think to capitalise on this, if it's not sorted in June, that's probably going to be the end of it.
I'd gladly take qualification based on the top 10 in the rankings at this point. It at least gives us something to fight for over the next 4 years. Hopefully Zimbabwe will give us some games soon too. They made themselves look very bad indeed with that cancellation.

A person who posts on a cricket forum I use got a reply from CA,

Thanks for your enquiry and feedback. We appreciate the time you have taken to write to us with your thoughts. As you aware, the decision was made by the International Cricket Council (ICC) board to reduce the competing number of teams from 14 to 10 for the 2015 Cricket World Cup, which Australia will host with New Zealand.

Following the announcement by the ICC, Cricket Australia Chief Executive Officer James Sutherland said he supported the rationale behind the decision

As joint hosts of the 2015 ICC CWC with Cricket New Zealand we are excited about delivering a world class event and we welcome the ICC decision to make it a ten-team event. Philosophically, CA is supportive of a merit-based competition where the public get to see the best sides playing off throughout the tournament so we leave the public wanting for more.

It is important not to look at this decision in isolation as the ICC has introduced some important changes that provide greater competition opportunities for associate and affiliate members, like expanding the T20 WC to a 16-side competition which is played more regularly.

Without knowing the background reasons for the decision, we are sympathetic to Ireland in particular who, if the rankings remained the same as they are now, would miss out.

We would also encourage you to contact the ICC via their website, International Cricket Council - ICC Events, ICC Cricket Rankings, Live Cricket Scores with any feedback on the decision you may have.

Thank you for taking the time to contact us and we thank you for your continued support of Australian cricket.

    Kind Regards

They've gone a good bit further publicly now as well:

'World Cup should have 10 best teams' - CA
"Our starting point on ICC Events has always been that qualification should be based on merit," a Cricket Australia spokesman told ESPNcricinfo.

"We support moving to a 10-team ICC World Cup in 2015 and longer term, support moving to ICC World Cups which are 10-team contests based on merit, [like] the top 10-ranked nations in the world. The ICC has discussed reviewing the position on 2015 and we will be an interested participant [both as an ICC member and also as a co-host] in that discussion."

Options include an expansion of the number of competing teams from 10 to the 2011 model of 14 or the more likely choice of 12, or simply the addition of a qualifying tournament between the best two Associate nations and the stragglers among the Full Members. Such a solution is clearly Cricket Australia's preference, for administrators have begun plotting the 2015 event with New Zealand based on a 10-team plan.

New Zealand coach John Wright joined the already loud chorus asking for a qualification process for the 2015 World Cup. In an interview with ESPNcricinfo, Wright said, "The World Cup has got to be about the world - they (the ICC) have to be sure they have got the ten best teams in it. No matter where they come from. Otherwise it's a nonsense. Surely it doesn't take eight years to sort that one out."

    :)

    :)

Wouldnt get too excited about this tbh, it'll be very easy for the ICC to ensure Zimbabwae, Bangladesh and other full members are ranked ahead of Ireland. Fixture list manipulation FTL

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,025 ✭✭✭d'Oracle

    Damn you and your logic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79 ✭✭DonRosco

I'm sure they could, if their aim was keeping Ireland out of the world cup at all costs. I don't think the ICC and various boards outside the bottom two really care if Zimbabwe or Ireland play in 2015 (apart from maybe CA, who would get more gate money at Ireland matches than Zim matches). I think this decision came about for two reasons:

    1. CA, BCCI, ECB and ICC all wanted a 10 team WC, with 9 matches guaranteed for the big teams.

    2. They wanted this more than they wanted it to be an inclusive event. The only way they could get the smaller nations on board for a 10 team WC was to agree to it being an all full member affair.

I don't think there was any conspiracy to keep Ireland out or anything. They're just short-sighted, greedy fools. All will become clear in the fullness of time anyway...

More hopeful news on the World Cup:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/cricket/13365391.stm

Trent Johnston wrote on his Twitter page: "Unanimous decision by ICC Cricket Committee to recommend to the Chief Exec Committee there be a qualifier for CWC 2015. A great result!"

10 test and 4 associated teams to play by right.
The 2015 World Cup in Australia-New Zealand will feature 14 teams a change from the original ten-team format, which means the Associate nations will not feel the axe from the World Cup.

According to the reports four associate teams will feature just like it was during the 2011 World Cup. The decision to reinstate fourteen teams was taken on the third day of the ICC's annual conference in Hong Kong on Tuesday.

On Monday, the second day of the conference, the ICC's chief executives' committee (CEC) had recommended to the executive board that there be a qualifying tournament for the 2015 World Cup, giving the Associates hope.

ICC President Sharad Pawar has taken up the cause of the minnows by asking its Board to reconsider the decision.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 343 ✭✭reb73

Looks like the decision had something to do with requiring the associates' vote to push through with the changes in the rotation policy of the ICC presidency!
As earlier reported, some Members believe the stretch to 14 teams is part of a deal to build support for the last major issue for discussion at the conference: scrapping the rotation policy for the appointment of the ICC president.
Pakistan and Bangladesh - the two Members who were to nominate the next candidates for president and vice-president by the rotation system - are opposed to the change. In order to pass a resolution amending the rule about the appointment of the ICC chief, eight of ten Full Members and 38 of 50 Associates will have to vote in favour of the motion. That vote could now be a formality with the Associates being placated by Tuesday's decision.

Good end result, but the machinations and politics suck!

Fantastic news, now its up to us associates to make sure there isn't a repeat of this crap in 4 years through our performances.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,033 ✭✭✭✭Richard Hillman

The reason why there was so much anger was because they were not even giving us a chance to qualify. This is a lot more than what we were asking. I thought they would go for a 12 team format with 2 associates qualifying. TBH Zimbabwe should have to qualify as well.

What does that rotation malarky mean?

Essentially that each test-playing country gets to nominate the president in turn. This time it's Pakistan's turn, apparently, and they don't want to give up that privilege.

  • Registered Users Posts: 740 ✭✭✭Cremated

The 2019 WC will go back to ten teams and the 2012 T20 World Cup has been reduced from 16 teams to 12 teams,

so we got more places for 2015 but lost them for the T20 World Cup, still it's great news...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,626 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

Fantastic news. Keeps Irish cricket alive. Gotta make sure now that we dont mess it up by not qualifying for 2015, although its nigh on impossible to see that happening.

Also even though 2019 is 10 teams, it will be the top 8 ranked teams in the world plus 2 from a qualifying tournament, so at least we know what we need to do to get into it

What am I missing here, it only mentions division two teams?, when Ireland is in division one,

how do we qualify?, is it likely Ireland will be able to field all their county players for the qualifiers also?, we will need to put our best team out...

Looking at it again, is it the top 6 associates play in a qualifier with 1/2 from Division two and then say for example Ireland and Afghanistan qualify from the 8 teams, then the other 6 who didn't qualify go into another league with 3/4 from Division two and battle it out for the last two spots?...

Thats it in a nutshell and as it's a league and not knockout it suits us even better.

  • Registered Users Posts: 740 ✭✭✭Cremated

So basically we have to come in the top two between us, Holland, Kenya, Afghanistan, Canada, Scotland, U.A.E, Namibia?,

we really should be looking at topping the group, will it be staged in the English winter so it allows Joyce, Niall, William etc to play in the qualifiers, or will they be released anyways?,

we really need to put out the best team we have for these games and guarantee we finish top, failing to qualify really isn't an option :(...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,606 ✭✭✭schemingbohemia

Our county players will get released as they are official ODIs. Very strong team announced for next weeks ODIs against Canada in Clontarf.

    From http://www.irishcricket.org/

The Ireland ODI squad for the games with Canada next week is as follows:

William Porterfield (captain) (Warwickshire), Alex Cusack (Clontarf), George Dockrell (Somerset), Trent Johnston (Railway Union), Nigel Jones (Civil Service North), Ed Joyce (Sussex), John Mooney (North County), Kevin O’Brien (Gloucestershire), Niall O’Brien (Northants), Boyd Rankin (Warwickshire), Paul Stirling (Middlesex), Albert Van der Merwe (YMCA), Andrew White (Instonians), Gary Wilson (Surrey).

  • Registered Users Posts: 740 ✭✭✭Cremated

These could be just the games for Joyce to get some International form back and I hope he takes full use of these games,

so these qualifiers are official ODI's so all county players will be released?, brilliant news, I don't see us not qualifying if we send out the full team, also do these ODI's with Namibia and Canada etc, in the ICC ODI cup, do they count in the ODI world rankings?...
