This might sound stupid:o but..... mouth open? Gulping in air? It sounds like how I would feel if I'm running (or even walking) into a really strong wind.

:D:D You are the second person to tell me to keep my mouth shut recently littlebug:D Last week while body boarding in Kerry I was sulking and freaking out because I kept swallowing water and thought I was going to drown (maybe I was being a tad over-dramatic!) Mr Bally8 promptly told me that maybe I should keep my mouth shut- he got a body board in the belly for that comment!

Anyway I went with your advice on the cycle yesterday and it actually worked. Obviously I cant keep my mouth closed all the time- Im waaayy to unfit to be able to breath through my nose but I made a conscious effort especially when I was going fast and had wind in my face. Thanks littlebug, cycling is much more enjoyable when you dont feel like throwing up :)

Sat 27th Aug- Walked for an hour
    Sun 28th Aug - 45 min walk
Mon 29th Aug - 34 lengths of the pool - 850m. I did the first 20 in 25 minutes- woohoo a minute faster than Friday:). Cant wait to learn the front crawl, I persume I will be way faster doing that then the breaststroke. 35 min walk later on
Tues 30th Aug - 21 minute run:D, very very slowly 1.8 miles. Arch was fine during the run but sore afterwards - also I realised just how quickly you can lose your fitness when not running for a few weeks. 40 minute walk later on that evening
    Wed 31st Aug - 25 minute walk
    Thurs 1st Sept - 80 minute walk
Fri 2nd Sept - 20 minute run - 1.8 miles again. No pain during or after:D:D. 32.5 km cycle with the hubby, it took us 1 hr 45 mins. First 20k took an hour- am delighted with this. Again a tough enough route- Portroe to Nenagh to Puckane to Ballycommon to Newtown and back home up those huge hills. A 25 min walk with the dog later on.

Im back to work since Tuesday but Im only on a 2 to 3 day week so will have plenty time to keep the cross training up. So happy to be running even if Im only allowed 20 minutes 3 times a week for now.

Gosh page 6! I forgot to keep this up to date now Im not really running anymore.

    Since last update...
    Sat 3rd Sept - 45 minute walk
Sun 4th Sept - 38 lenghts of pool, breast stroke. Didnt realise until I was out that it was 950m, really wished I had pushed and did 2 more to bring it up to 1000m. Still that's my longest swim yet so I was happy with that.
Mon 5th Sept - Went to my first spin class- Begin to Spin in JJB Sports. Wow its some sweaty work out. I was sooooo broken for days after. I seriously thought I had done permanent damage to my lady garden area:o:eek:. Glad to report its ok now:)
Tues 6th Sept - 20 min very slow run - 1.77 miles followed by a 40 minute walk with the dog.
    Wed 7th Sept - 30 min walk
Thurs 8th Sept - 37.4km cycle, great workout as it was so hilly, very tough 2 hrs 8 mins. Later on we did a 1 hr 20 mins walk with the dog.
    Fri 9th Sept - 40 min walk
Sun 11th Sept - 25 min run on treadmill. First treadmill run in a good while. Longest run since my injury at end of July- wow a whole 25 minutes!! 2.37 miles. Arch feeling good. 1 hour walk later on.

I had meant to ask you about it R. Im a total beginner and have only been to 2 of the begin to spin classes. Find them very good but tough. Do you think I would be able for your classes? Would love to give it a go but am a bit scared you might kill me:o

    Last week:

Mon 12th Sept - 15 minute walk at work. I have 2 sports classes per week with our girls here in Youthreach. They are so unbelieveably unfit its scary. Good thing is they are interested in getting fit so there was none of the usual teenage moaning today.

30 min Begin to Spin class after work. Much better this week- my ass got a break as we did most of the session out of the saddle. Very enjoyable workout.

Tues 13th Sept - 30 min walk with dog after work. Quick bite to eat then off to my first swimming lesson in 15 years. Apart from a very embarrassing misunderstanding with one of the instructors, this was an excellent lesson. I picked up lots of tips for the front crawl. Still swallowing half of the pool but hopefully I will improve over the next 5 lessons.

Wed 14th Sept - 40 min walk with the dog followed by a 20 minute run on the treadmill. Arch was very achy afterwards.

Thurs 15th Sept - Physio sesson. All the usual machines, shockwave, heat, ultrasound etc. He thinks I should seriously consider orthotics but thinks Im recovering as well as can be expected. I am allowed run but not to push it beyond 3 times per week for 20 - 30 mins. He gave me tape and showed me how to use it to support the arch during runs.

    1 hour walk later on.

Fri 16th Sept - 45.15km cycle with Mr.Bally8. Wow it was tough going- the wind was brutal, sometimes I felt like I was going backwards. We went from Portroe, to Nenagh along the old N7 to Bridhill, on to Ballina and back over the hills to Portroe. Nearly made it to the top of Charlie's Hill (infamous in these parts- people avoid even walking up it as its so steep). Next time I will do it!! It took us 2hrs 44 mins with many stops along the way. 40 min walk later.

Sat 17th Sept - Swimming this morning. The legs were tired after yesterdays cycle so I only managed 30 lengths. Practiced the stuff I learnt at Tuesdays lesson- forgot most of it so ended up swallowing lots of yummy pool water again:(. 40 min walk later on.

Sun 18th Sept - 26 min run on treadmill- 2.38 miles, longest run since injury:). 15.75km cycle in 58.11- the fact I live in a very very hilly place is making me look very slow (well that and the fact that I am very slow:D) Delighted to have made it up a hill we call Fergal's hill (our friend fergal lives near it), in the last 4 weeks I've tried twice and failed so was thrilled to have finally done it. 40 min walk later on.

Mon 19th Sept - Busy day at work so I ended up staying late and missing my spin class Took the girls on a walk again today picked up the pace a little with them but we ended up on a muddy road and came to a crawl as they didnt want to dirty their shoes:rolleyes:.

Tues 20th Sept - 40 min walk with the stupid dog- he was going crazy all as he was alone all day so full of energy. Gave me 3 more bruises to add to the collection. Didnt have time to eat before my swim lesson so felt very tired and lazy throughout. It was a good lesson though- a different girl this week and she gave no break just over and back for countless widths. Not sure what the distance was overall. Did 3 lengths at the end to practie what I had just learned- ended up swallowing some more of the pool:o

Wed 21st Sept - Im bringing the students at work swimming every Wednesday morning for the next 13 weeks. Today was the first day and only 3 out of the 5 girls showed up. Still the 3 were full of energy and fun. It was very enjoyable and I got the chance to practice some of my breathing in the front crawl. We ended up doing 8 lengths of a 20 metre pool, lots off attempts of handstands under the water, trying to touch the bottom at the deep end and lots of floating around chatting. 40 minute walk with dog later on.

Thurs 22nd Sept - Collected my road bike yesterday- yippie. Its the first time I have had the pedals where your foot goes in the cage thing and straps in. Nearly fell off the bike over and over again while trying to get my feet in as I cycled around the house Wednesday evening. Headed off by myself today for a test cycle to see how she went. Wow! Wow! Its so fast. The difference between it and my hybrid is unbelievable. I had no clue that a road bike could be this much easier and faster to cycle. I followed the same route I did last Sunday 8mins 20 seconds faster. I had the breaks on coming down every hill as the speed was freaking me out. Its so much more powerful but you feel every bump on the road. Love it, love it!! 15.79kms in 49:51- that really difficult hill seemed so much easier today. Came home, put the bike away, had a drink and headed off on my run. Legs felt a bit weird for the first minute or two but grand after that. 2.1 miles in 22 minutes. Thats the fastest pace I've done since the injury. My first ever brick session- woohoo. Came back, changed and took the dog for a 40 minute walk. I think my neighbours consider me a mental patient:)

Fri 23rd Sept - Swim this morning. I've noticed a pattern emerging on these swims- the first 15-20 lengths are really tough. I start thinking Im not going to be able to do many more but then after 20 I start feeling stronger and it gets a bit easier. Does this mean that its taking me 20 lengths to warm up? Anyways it took me 22 mins to do the first 20 today:o, slow I know but I have to start somewhere and its 3 mins faster than the last time I timed myself:). Did 32 lengths in total 800 metres in 36 minutes. I know that if I want to start doing triathlons I will need to vastly improve my 750metre time. At the moment I have to stop and catch my breath every 2 to 3 lengths. Still taking on too much water when I attempt the front crawl so mostly do the breast stroke. Hopefully the lessons will fix that. I have all winter to work on the swimming so Im not too worried about it yet.

Congrats on the new toy. Wait till you try clip-in pedals - there's a bit of a learning/falling curve but the difference in cycling after you get used to them is "never go back" good.

wow .... you're really taken to the swimming/cycling with a vengeance! I have to tip my hat. I've started swimming to recover some fitness but 30 laps (with a rest every 4 laps) leaves me needing a nap. When you get back to running you are going to be great shape to push on and make some serious progress.

Thanks brownian, the clip in pedals scare the bejesus out of me but I'll definitely get them once I get used to the bike. I've heard they are brilliant.

Thanks guys. I'm very happy with my new adventures in cycling and swimming. I'm still very very slow and inefficient with both especially the swimming. Every other time I've been injured I've given up on all exercise and gone back to my other fave past-time of lying on couch eating chocolate. Thankfully this time I have found new things to do which I'm really enjoying. The fact that Im now only working 2.5 days a week and that my daughter is away at school in Cork means I have lots of free time for exercising.

Friday 23rd Sept pm - Took the dog for a 45 minute walk. Physio says I should be walking as often as possible. In the past I thought walking was a waste of time when you could be running so had no real interest in it. Luckily having a dog makes me go out every day. No pain in the arch at all for the last few days- yippie!

I think I must be slightly addicted to exercising these days. Even though I had cycled and walked today I just felt like I hadnt done enough so I decided to do Jillian Michaels 30 day shred DVD. I thought- how bad could a 20 minute work out be? Really bad is the answer to that one. The sweat was pouring down my face and off my chin by the end. I used heavy weights to make the workout tougher, by the end I could barely lift them:o Mr.Bally8 came home from work to be greeted by a moaning sweaty mess lying on the sitting room floor!

Sat 24th Sept - 32.55km cycle in 1hr42 mims with Mrbally8. The first 20k took less than an hour but then things got very hilly and the pace slowed. Nice enjoyable cycle. Still loving my new bike- its also very pretty:)
After dinner I went on a run. Ended up doing 2.91 miles in 30 minutes- my longest run since I got injured- woohoo!!

Mon 26th Sept - 25 minute walk with the girls at work- moan moan moan, teenagers can be very frustrating at times! Begin to Spin class on way home from work, tough and fun as usual.

Tues 27th Sept - Swim lesson Number 3. It was so unbelieveably cold in there. I have Raynauds Syndrome which is a circulation problem that really affects me in the winter. The pool was so cold tonight that I lost the circulation in my fingers from the knuckles down- painful. The swimming instructor said the pool wasnt cold, it had been tested and is only 0.04 degrees colder than usual - my arse!! I wanted to tell her to hop in an tell me it wasnt cold. Of course we warmed up after a few lenghts but I was very uncomfortable for a good while. I dont know if I can keep using it if its that cold all the time.

Wed 28th Sept - Swimming with my students in Shannon today- thankfully this pool wasnt so cold so no circulation loss. Great fun as they were all in good spirits. Did 16 lazy lengths - 320 metres total. Was supposed to be going to meta's spin class tonight but plans changed and I went home early instead. Will give it a go next week instead.

Feeling like Im not working out enough this week. No walking or running yet, only one session per day. Hope to rectify that over the next few days.

Thurs 29th Sept - Quick 45 min cycle with the OH. Nice hilly route. Very enjoyable. Follwed it with a 23 min run. My arch was a bit niggly for the first few mins but it passed thank god. 2.13 miles in total.

Fri 30th Sept - 50 minute swim this morning. It's hard to explain all the different thoughts I was having during the 43 lengths. I started off with the aim of doing the first 20 lenghts quicker than last week (23 mins). I feel Im obsessing with time too much though. I cant get my mind off the fact that I need to be able to do 30 lengths under 30 mins to do a pool based triathlon next year. I think there usually is a cut off point and I worry that I will never be quick enough. So today the first 20 lengths were awful as I tried to swim fast and failed miserably, swallowing lots of water, being totally out of breath, forgetting everything I learned at my lessons and reverting very quickly back to the old reliable breast stroke. I feel like I will never get the nack of the front crawl, I havent improved at all.

After the first 20 lengths (21 mins) I decided to cop on slow down and try focus on my technique. Still I only managed 5 lengths of front crawl, 2 on my back and the rest of the 43 breast stroke. On the positive side I managed 1075m, the longest swim ever. It's only 8 weeks since I started back swimming again after a 15 year break and I've only had 3 lessons. I know Im expecting too much too soon from myself. Realised that I need to calm down, learn to swim properly and just spend the next few months working on fitness and technique before I even begin to think about speed.

    1st October
45.7km cycle with my OH. We did the same route that we followed 3 weeks ago but backwards- Portroe, to Ballina, to Birdhill, Nenagh, Newtown and back to Portroe. This time we were 16 minutes faster but it was easier to go this way and the wind wasnt half as bad. I was chilled to my core by the end of it though. 45 minute walk later on.
