full specs? i dont know of an SSD that scores 7.9, or how a 560Ti does it?
    MSI N560GTX-Ti Hawk - Graphics adapter - GF GTX 560 Ti - PCI Express 2.0 x16 - 1 GB GDDR5 - DVI, 1 €215.00 €215.00

    Corsair XMS3 - Memory - 8 GB : 2 x 4 GB - DIMM 240-pin - DDR3 - 1333 MHz / PC3-10600 - CL9 - 1.5 1 €82.95 €82.95

    Processor - 1 x Intel Core i7 2600K / 3.4 GHz - 1
    HDMI Cable HDMI M - HDMI M 5m v1.3

SSD is OCZ Agility 3, which is supposed to be bottom of the range.
Also put in a Frio cooler. These results were after installing that. It scored slightly lower with a stock cooler as far as I remember. Dont know why else it would be scoring slightly higher than others with the same components really. [I tell myself it is because of build quality but this is fantasy :)]

Everything is connected with SATA 3 connectors and ports incidentally - maybe that is the differentiator

    Don't have a Pic as I'm not on it now, but I scored a 7.5/7.9 :)

Could be the power settings? If the processor cooling policy is to slow the CPU before increasing the fan speed, then this *could* have an effect.

Starting the WEI puts the OS into the High Performance power profile temporarily then changes it back when the test is complete. This is more noticeable on laptops as the screen brightness changes.

Where did you find that out?

From experience! ;) Set your screen brightness in Power Options to a certain level then do so for High Performance too, but choose a different level. When when you re-run the assessment you'll see the brightness change to the level you set for the High Performance profile. That's the biggest giveaway.

    Because the brightness changes? Sigh.

    I'll pretend I didn't read that.

Proof is attached. Cancel the test and it changes back.

I've just done the same. I changed my settings to power saver. When I run the assessment, it doesn't change to High Performance. Are you suggesting it does?

It did for me just there.

    Are you using a laptop?

    Are you using a laptop?

Yep, I am. It's on Balanced by default but changes to High Performance and back when I start and stop the test.

And is it plugged in? This could be limited to laptops.

    Yeah it's plugged in.

I am dismissing the argument of WEI changing the Power Options when it's running. I am using an OEM copy of Windows 7 Professional. What you're seeing could be down to the laptop manufacturer's software changing the power options or something like that.

I'm not using the pre-installed OS, which was Vista Home Premium. I'm not using any Acer OEM drivers on this machine whatsoever.

Mine changes OTF. When plugged in, its on "Performance", when not plugged in, I get "Balanced", and when the battery is under 30%, its on "Power Saver" (or something).

My laptop doesn't have any manufacturer software on it, as acer provided me with a separate DVD for a windows 7 upgrade, and one for their software. Did a clean install with the upgrade DVD, didn't bother myself with acer's muck.

That said, I may have changed something in the last two years myself, but afaik, there's no software governing it.

    Strange one.

Yeah, laptops change their power options when plugged in/out, I'm just not sure that they change when they are running the WEI - or if all Windows PC's do this and mine is just an exception?

just tested it there with CPU-Z and as soon as you click on the reassesment, it shoots up the cpu frequency to max. that pretty much settles it then i think?

interestingly, my i5-2500k apparently uses just 0.974v when at 1.6ghz. cool.

Does it change Windows Power Options? That's what's in question.

I'm on a desktop and it changes to high performance the moment I start it.

everything is high 7's, just not my normal hdd which brings me to 5.9 :(

This suggests that it only won't be a proper reflection of system performance in battery only mode.

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/What-is-the-Windows-Experience-Index

The following conditions might prevent Windows from updating the Windows Experience Index:

    • Running on battery power.* Windows automatically tries to conserve power when running on a battery alone. So if your computer is running on battery power, a performance assessment won't reflect its true capabilities. Plug your computer in, and then re-run the assessment.

Heh, 2 x 6970s gets a lower score than your single 580 for some reason. Is WEI able to take into account monitor resolution?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,979 ✭✭✭Tea_Bag

WIE doesn't take into account a second GPU at all.

    I've a single 480, not 580. ;)

I haven't overclocked the CPU, which could give me a higher rating, but I guess my SSD would still be the slowest component. It's a OCZ SSD Vertex 2 240GB.
