Anybody know about setting up a teamspek server? Or how much it is to rent one?

Had a look at the teamspeak faq the other night but was more confused about the payment system after I looked at it!!

Im not looking to set up one for a sever or anything, just be handy to have a private channel when needed for a few friends

Or does anybody know of good alternatives, dont mind a small subscription fee but dont want to spend loads on it

I've only recently discovered Evolve after getting fed up of Hamachi. They claim to offer a free peer-to-peer VoIP system which I've yet to use, but who knows it might be worthwhile to try it out before spending money on a Teamspeak or Mumble server.

If not and you want your own I can help you set it up in linux as I have built my own.

That sounds great man cheers, id happily take a room on your one if your happy to provide one.

Thanks for the advice lads, ill have a look at that evolve app also.

I was on gaellords.com epoch server for awhile, I didnt use teamspeak though was using direct comms as I was playing solo, although I was mostly playing at night so was usually empty:(

Just got 2 friends to join the master race lately and be great to have decent voip regardless of the game.

EDIT: As a matter of interest how would you build one with linux? Do you use two seperate machines? I have no clue about linux by the way!!

Just go on gimmegaming.ie teamspeak server and when you see me on (admin = my work account) (deceitfulone = my gaming pc) just ask me to set you up a channel and I will set you up with admin privileges on it to add your own password etc.

Cheers man, using guest lobbies on dayz can get a bit crowded so not ideal. Ill be on over the weekend a good bit so ill see if I can catch you online.

Hows the rma going with the 290X,overclockers accept it?

Overclockers dealt with it very quickly and sent it to sapphire for repair but they are terrible to deal with, cant get through to anyone from sapphire, think will end up waiting the 28 working days then will get a replacement instead hopefully.
My new card I ordered from overclockers as they where decent with the rma process and switched to msi as they are supposed to have much better support.

    Why not Skype?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,253 ✭✭✭..Brian..

Does Skype work as an effective team speak app? Thought it took up a load more bandwidth than dedicated gaming TS apps?

The most annoying thing about sky is not being able to mute specific people. Then there is the sound quality, there was always one or two in our group that couldn't chat proper without a lot of feedback. We don't have these issues with teamspeak.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,697 ✭✭✭Danger781

Fair enough :) Myself and the lads use Skype anyway. It's just more convenient since we all have Skype open and running anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,047 ✭✭✭Bazzo

Myself and a few mates use Skype but it's less than ideal.

If there's a large number of people in the call it can get a bit hectic because a lot of people don't use push to talk on skype.

It's also more of a bandwidth and resource hog than teamspeak/ventrilo/mumble which affects those with worse connections and older machines fairly badly.

    mumble or ventrillo?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,615 ✭✭✭Revoker88

Yeah I had heard that the audio quality was not the best on skype, ive only used teamspeak up to now though so thats not from personal experience.

I just found teamspeak fairly intuative to use so decided to stick with that.

Im still unsure of the way they charge/dont charge for it.

Found there faq unhelpful, or at least badly worded.

If its for personal use, you can create your own server for free and host it yourself, if your a for profit company, you can pay a license to host your own server, otherwise you have to pay a company to host it.
Mumble is pretty good also, dont know about the pricing schemes for them though

Thanks, just not very clear in the faq. Do you host it on a server or are you hosting it on your local machine when your gaming?

Why not get a VPS from amazon? You can get a Linux and a Windows VPS completely free for a year. Just be careful how much storage you assign. Setting up the actual TS server is a fairly simple process then.

I have an esxi 5.5 server with 48gb ram and 6 core cpu so I have it hosted on this with a few other servers. It stays up mostly (I say mostly as i've had to work on the esx server for a bit before xmas so was off for about an hour per week for 3 weeks until I rectified the issue so 3hrs downtime). Its up the last 38 1/2 days atm though without powering off :).

That sounds sweet man, are you running game servers on that as well?

Do electricity prices not kill you?
I know you probably have low power/efficent components in there but electricity is so costly these days:(

Electricity is a killer yea but its worth it for me as from what I've learned with that server in the last year i've got 3 5k rises from so easily pays for itself (its an i7 970 6core, can run over 5ghz but generally have on stock :) ).
My dual cpu dell servers are much heavier on power than this though.
I'm not running any game servers at the moment but have been planning for a while to use my other servers as game servers, just never got around to it.

Thats just friggin awsome man, if you can afford the bills why not. Great you can apply something of a hobby in your personal life to your professional life and get rewarded for it:)

Cheers for the info and hopefully ill catch you on teamspeak over the weekend

Anyone any up to date info on running crossfire on a x16x4 board?

My brother has a z77 pro3 and am wondering would it be worth while throwing another 7850 in there crossfire. Lot's of conflicting info online.

The speed of the link wont affect it too much and you wont notice much drop in performance if any versus a machine with two 16x links.

Excellent. Might be worth a shot. Will update with results if we do it.

It's the hard drive thats causing the noise. Took the case off with the computer on just to mess about and test it out.

I added some hand pressure to the top of the WD blue drive and.. yup the noise reduced significantly.

I'll learn to live with it :pac:

It PCE 3.0 X4 as so thats about the same bandwidth as PCIe 2.0 X8, its not likely to hamper the performance of a second card like the HD7850 too much at all.
