Im starting to even dream about doing a LSR on Sunday maybe, 15-18 miler to remind my body its a running machine, not a tester in some kind of poo pourri factory :)

Never heard of one of those, is it like a mud bath but they use poo instead?:D:pac::P

Hope you're back in action soon!:)

Sorry to hear you wont be pacing, hope you get back on schedule.

    Thursday
2.5k in about 15 mins, a good test run. A million times better than Tuesday, could well have gone on longer if I wanted. But stopped as physio had said to limit run to 10 mins...

Back a fraction stiff in one place, but otherwise not too bad at all. :D

    Friday
Physio after work, good but not great news. Clear to run ok, but he wants me to really slowly build up in bunches of 5 mins from 20 mins...

Better than nothing by a long shot, but not huge use for stamina and endurance for Berlin - some decisions to make :(

    Saturday:
When I would have been on the start line of the Dublin half, and should have been pacing 2 hour duties and working up a thirst for Ryans, I went and did another rehab run.:mad::mad::mad::mad:

What do I do, is sorta ignore physio right from the off, and I did 6.5k in just short of 35 mins, featuring 2k's in the middle at 5.10 pace [which was me speeding up naturally, not pushing it at all].

Back is a TINY bit stiff right now but really no worries at all..

Will see how back is over the day before I decide what to do in the morning, doing some kind of long run is very tempting indeed. The battle being, to be over cautious versus the "get busy living...." mentality I generally have these days :pac:

Im in London for what will be two busy days work Monday and Tuesday, so can always talk those two days off as total rest days if needed...

Already have physio booked for Wednesday lunchtime just in case...

Bold Vagga won, and I did indeed do a long run this morning, joined a couple of brave souls on the boards long run around the park. End of the day I don't want to just "get around" Berlin, I'm either having a good stab at 3.30 or what's the point, and thus I wanted to do another longish run - even if its just to reassure my taper madness head I had not lost all my fitness...

Just over 22k in just over 2 hours

Ran with taxi fare home and also GF was at home, and she would collect me if my back was giving me stick. But thankfully did not need it.

But low and behold I had basically zero back pain for about 90 minutes of the run [and then it was fine], my focus on my posture while running and looking after my back yesterday really paying off. After about 90 mins my back was a tiny bit stiff, but it did not affect my pace at all. But when we were heading back around by Garda HQ I decided to head home at that point, knowing I would hit 2 hours of a run, no point in being a hero and doing 10k more for the sake of it and risking doing some real damage.

Came in home, my new bath really paying for itself these days and after a nice warm bath and my back is grand..

Monday: woke up (at 5.30 for flight to london) with my big toe on left foot in agony! I actually screamed out "you have to be kidding me" - showing I watch far too much tv!

Interweb shows me a range of advice, going from either am going to loose the toe and I can't ever run again to HTFU!

By lunch yesterday it was agony...

Found a great site with stretches and exercises you can do for a range of common injuries and low and behold doing what they said for this makes a gigantic difference, pain is 80% gone!

This morning 8k in 45 mins around regents park and primrose hill - middle 3 km's at 5min/km pace (8min miles) going 5 min/km pace feels too hard still (where now it should be easy) which is a small worry...

No back issues at all this morn, which is good.

Delighted to see you are on the mend (although I'm sure you are still worried) if the stretching seems to be working keep at it, this time 2 weeks you'll be home nursing a hangover after your Berlin conquest:)

9.5k in just over 51 mins..

Tired at end of a stressful day, which is not what you want in taper, but I wanted to get out and do a planned session for the first time in bloody weeks [or it feels like that anyway!]

So I did 3 x 8 mins at HM Pace, with 2 mins in-between each one - decent warm up and down before and after, warmup and down faster than it should have been tbh, with a few strides at the end..

    11k in 1.15 odd

Run home from work, easy pace [always harder to get going after a long day at work, but feels great to be running pain free for the first time in weeks].

Hardest thing for me about this taper period is not going out and running to try and somewhat make up for any training I have lost in the couple of weeks injured. I took it easy last night, but had this nagging feeling all night that a few miles would make a difference. I saw sense, but its a battle

    23.5k in 2 hours and 10 Mins

I have planned and missed 3 runs out clontarf way on this training plan, so got a great idea leaving the house and did. So ran from my house, out clontarf way, until I got to over an hour [and so it happens around the point you turn and come back in Clontarf Half, and just ran home].

Pushed the pace a small bit for first 10 miles, and took it easier from there...

My plan said a 'fast finish' run of about a hour 45 [Custom plan I have is largely time based, looking at it, sorta a cross between P&D and Daniels I guess].

But since I have missed a number of long runs over last month to 6 weeks I do have a fear that I'm seriously undercooked endurance wise for Berlin [and thats not taper madness speaking, thats cold hard truth, that I have missed a bunch of 16-20 mile runs]. So I took a look at the plans at the back of the P&D book and the longest run on this weekend before the marathon in any of their plans [in one of their 100 mile a week plans] is 14 miles, so thats what I did. Cheating, but not too bad :)

Stunningly excited now, not for Berlin yet, but 4 members of my family and myself doing the rathfarnham 5k tomorrow  in a scheme I hatched about 3 months ago - So pacing a couple of them to get under 30 mins is the highlight of my week by miles  [oh on that run, I will pass 1000 miles for the year too]

    32.49 - Rathfarnham 5k

One of the most enjoyable days of my short running career. :D

I was pacing my sister around rathfarnham 5k, to be totally honest, its more satisfying than any PB! All in all 6 family or family "other halves" finished the race, in a fitness plot I hatched a couple of months ago!

Back to mums afterwards for a brilliant breakfast and the craic was mighty, all the happy faces and folks who had not run a step in their lives 2 months ago all proud of themselves, talking about when the next one would be, and asking how they would get under 30 mins.

At the same time, a brilliant recovery run for me, legs and body feel brilliant now

Oh and thats 1000 miles for the year, a couple of months earlier than last year, and a month or so "late" due to injuries around peak training weeks

Not really doing the taper madness thing at all this time really, which is a shame, except for one thing....

Called in to my sisters to see them and nephews last night, and both lads were sick, I was doing my best to hang out with them, but in the same process staying as far away from them as possible and not let their germs get near me!

Today in work, one of the lads is clearly sick, and Im working hard to stay as far away from him as possible :pac:

9.5k in just short on 50 mins

Last decent run before Berlin! Decent warm up and warm down, in between Fartlek, 5 times 3 minutes at faster than MP followed by 3 times 40 seconds...

Not feeling too bad at all, all set and I wish we could zoom forward a few days and get over with :)

On way to breakfast run now, not 100% sure where I'm going, but follow the people in expensive runners and too much figure hugging glow in the dark clothes seems like a sound plan :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,693 ✭✭✭tHE vAGGABOND

    3.38 (I'm told!)

Garmin locked up/froze at start line and so I had no idea what pace I was running most of the time. Tried to follow people with good gear and decent runners with plenty of miles on them :D

Last 12k were an agony I have not experienced before. Few hours in bed should somewhat sort that and then to the pub.

    Proper report Tuesday/Wednesday!

Thanks for a the support both here and those I have met and run with in real life. Really does make a difference!

Hop you are happy with that time considering you were running blind and the tough last 12km? Well done!
