The county manager is clueless. The current Regime and it's Civil Service advisers are dedicated to the easy option of cutting capital spending on infrastructure back to zero.

Their pay and pensions have to be protected at all and any cost.

There was some work going on last week at the Wicklow end, just before the bottleneck, and something just after the Arklow Bypass yesterday, completely forgot about it. May be preparations to get started, can't imagine them pointlessly resurfacing and redoing the roadmarkings.

They're resurfacing the potholed bits between the Arklow Bypass and Jack Whites at the moment.

That's unlikely to be part of the contract though. Maybe that's due to worries about the viability of the scheme from the constructors perspective.

You wouldn't want the Dubs breaking their caravan axles during the holiday season and gunking up the traffic would you . :)

That stretch of road has always had problems with surface degradation. Since the construction period is about 2 years it would make sense to patch up the existing road until the new road is completed. Was it due to start in June?

    In today's Irish Times
Two motorway schemes to get European funding
Two stalled motorway schemes have received a boost with the Department of Transport confirming that the European Investment Bank (EIB) has provided loan approval in principle for the next phase of the Atlantic Corridor, the €530 million Gort to Tuam route and the €350 million N7 Newlands Cross/N11 Arklow – Rathnew.

According to the Department of Transport, the EIB is providing a loan in principle of up to €170 million for the Gort-Tuam route and up to €75 million to the Newlands Cross project.

Work was due to start on the Gort-Tuam route in the first quarter of 2010, but the private sector partner, the BAM Balfour Beatty consortium was not able to secure suitable funding due to concerns about Ireland’s sovereign debt.

The loan approvals in principle are part of a wider EIB initiative to provide finance for Irish infrastructural projects.

Everyone on this forum already knew that partial eib funding was in place for gort to tuam and newlands cross ppp projects but where will the rest of the money come from?these 2 projects will happen but not for a few years, the exchequer is bankrupt and the private companies simply cant raise finance, this article in the irish times is either sloppy journalism by repeating the eibs stance of funding in principle from 2 years ago or its complete rubbish

Its Eurowashing due to slightly wobbly poll numbers for Thursday. Expect to see more similar stories get repeated.

Pretty sure NC/M11 is already funded, otherwise how is it kicking off in a few weeks.

Yes, I believe the funding was secured and in place a while back. It is due to start the beginning of June, can anyone confirm that it is case.

The funding was obtained in late 2009 and the FG spinners are desperate for good euronews.

I'll be voting NO as the FG spinners deliberately went out and got a crooked politician to re-announce the news in Galway.

I hope you're not going to vote NO in the treaty referendum just to punish the gov!

    Don't worry, they'll start it.

And then they'll have a massive problem delaying the project for another few years.

But will it really kick off in a few weeks?

We'll see when it comes out in the wash, now that the referendum is over. Like many of you guys, I'm taking the recent road funding announcements with a few grains of salt - let's see if there's any substance now - I guess we know the answer to that question.

Right, it's time to re-tender - no more time should be wasted on this BS IMO! This Dutch/English consortium seem to think they can mess around with the tendering process in Ireland - the NRA need to show them otherwise and show them the door - a precedent needs to be set here!

Totally unacceptable. The NRA should re-tender immediately and show BAM the door. These delays are simply unacceptable and are putting lives in jeopardy.

Typical... hopefully it won't be deferred into the oblivion like countless other infrastructure projects.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,227 ✭✭✭✭Marcusm

Re tender immediately and probably find that no one is interested as it is very likely that the pricing and/or funding is insecure. No other reason is likely. Can complain about BAM about as much as we like but their tender is years ago and probably predicated on a particular startdate which has long passed. Whether any construction company is willing to start a project with an insecure funding position is unlikely (and by that I include the possibility of Euro breakup).

    From the echo -

    http://www.enniscorthyecho.ie/news/eyeyeyeymh/
Co. Manager confident about road projects

THE LONG awaited Gorey Service Area looks set to be open by summer 2014, while the New Ross and Clough to Oylegate bypasses are looking far more likely to progress in the short to medium term.

County Manager Eddie Breen told the monthly meeting of the local authority that the N11 Arklow Rathnew motorway has been prioritised by the government.

“All funding mechanisms have been agreed and there will be a contact signed in October. Unless there is some major shock to the system it should go ahead,” he added.

Fianna Fáil Cllr. Malcolm Byrne welcomed the news, saying the new road will attract more people into Wexford.

“Based on the end of year commencement date is it fair to assume that by Easter 2014 I should be able to stop off at the Gorey Service Area and would be on a dual carriageway motorway all the way to Dublin,” he said.

Mr. Breen said summer 2014 would be more likely

Eddie Breen was also a director of the NRA, so should have a pretty good handle on what is happening.
