From a pop basis you had take that at their best, spice girls, backstreet boys, boyzone all better than modern alternatives.

Give me a list from the noughties as impressive.

Would just have Take That from that list, you can keep the rest imo, you could also put them in the noughties, as comebacks go Gary Barlows has to be one of the most amazing comeback stories.

This thread is depressing me. I'm going to bed and hope I somehow wake up back in the nineties, I'll watch a bit of the big breakfast, play some super mario 3 on the nintendo, then go up to my bedroom, to my Sony radio and tape some real classics like gangster paradise and bitter sweet syphamy and hope I stop the tape on time before the dj speaks!

I'm always a bit mystified when people say this decade was poor for music, I know some of my favourite albums come form the last 10 years and I listen to music ranging back ot the 60's. Mainstream music has gone down the toilet yes, but if you know where to look there are plenty of gems.

I've been addicted to these lately, though haven't gotten the incident yet :) However I'll throw this song up, picking the best of the decade is pointlessly subjective so I'll go for my favourite song at the moment :p

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Jaysus kids 00's weren't as bad as you're all trying to make out, there was some class stuff along the way.

M.I.A - Paper Planes (one of the catchiest songs of any decade)

Johnny Cash - Hurt (what a vocal performance, never heard such emotion put into a song before or since)

MGMT - Time To Pretend (great rock and roll song, that's not too pretentious to embrace the electro dance legacy of the 90's)

Eninem ft Dido - Stan (I garauntee this song will still be played on mainstream radio in 20 years, a classic. Proved Eminem was genuinly a talented and intelligent lyricist. Dido's on top form too)

    Just throw this in aswell cause mentioning Stan has made me remember songs from the album. My Personal favourite song from TMMLP, and in my opinion the best thing Eminem has done. {kinda anathema to the point of the song but we used this religiously to get us pumped up for the weekend of partying to come}

Elbow - A Day Like This.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,691 ✭✭✭Lia_lia

Fuck the Pain Away - Peaches

    Ahaha. What a song.

Seriously though Songs for the Deaf by QOTSA gets album of the decade from me. Love it. Most songs off that.

Also, Teardrop by Massive Attack. Even though it was released in 1998 it was used a lot in ads and tv over the 00's. And it's one of my favourite songs. But er...guess it doesn't count really.

    And Jay-Z - 99 Problems.

    And Draculas Wedding by Outkast.

So Easy by Royksopp. Or Eple.

I could go on all day.

    But that's just my taste.

chasing cars no 1  its not even snow patrols best song, run is a far better song and much more loved (for anyone thats been to see SP live)

watching mccartney sing the likes of let it be, hey jude, yesterday and live and let die last week really showed how poor the 00s were music wise

the 90s (at least the early years) was a great time rock music wise, pearl jam's 10, Vitalogy, nirvana's nevermind, metallicas self titled, use your illusion 1 and 2, green day - dookie, superunknown, dirt by AIC, smashing pumpkins - mellion collie, radiohead the bends and ok computer

nothing like those in the 00s

    hmmm

    anything by the fratellies...

vallerie ( the original, not the whino ****e. )

anything by early cold play namely got put a smile on your face

how you remind me by nickelback - best rock song of the last 20 odd years and counting.

Even though I kinda like Chasing Cars, I cannot stand the lead singer from Snow Patrol. He seriously annoys me. On most of their songs his voice is awful and I hate his superior attitude over other music.

I don't think I have a favoutite of the decade but these could be in the running:

    Beyonce - Crazy In Love
Kylie - Can't Get You Out Of My Head
Take That - Rule The World
    The Killers - Mr. Brightside

As it's pretty impossible to name "Song of the Decade", I thought I'd list 10 of my favorite songs that I think I'll still be listening to well past 2010 :

    Beyonce - Crazy in Love
Seven Nation Army - The White Stripes
    Johnny Cash - Hurt
    Eminem - Lose Yourself
    Muse - Starlight
    OutKast - Hey Ya
    Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #1
Daft Punk - One More Time
Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out
Kylie Minogue - Can't Get You Out of My Head

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,379 ✭✭✭extra-ordinary_

It's not anywhere close to my favourite song but I'd put - The Killers-Mr. Brightside forward as the most iconic song to represent the 00's.

I'm amazed that so many people are being so negative bout the noughties. I think part of the 'problem' that noughties music seems worse than other decades is that we all have access to so much music. It then becomes slightly more disposable while we look for the next song / album to give us the 'hairs on the back of the neck' feeling that we all get from finding our new favourite tune.

Anyway, aside from that babble, my top pop picks from the past 10 yrs are :

    Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)
Flaming Lips - Do You Realise
The New Pornographers - Letter From An Occupant
    Architecture In Helsinki - It'5
Sunset Rubdown - Stadiums And Shrines II

nah, the 00s is considered bad because there has been no memorable or iconic songs, nobody is going to be singing beyonce, artic monkeys or muse stuff in 50 years time, they just won't

i remember watching top of the pops in 1991 and nirvana coming on and with the first riff of "smells like" you knew this was an iconic song, one that people would still be talking long after nirvana were no more, i can't think of one song this decade that i could say with a serious face, yeah thats this decades "hey jude" or "billie jean"

i blame programs like x-factor and american idol, they have sucked the life out of music, whereas in the past music companies would have taken a chance on aspiring musicans now they only sign up and market talentless simon cowell goons

    Anyone?

Yep definitely in my top 5. Well maybe Top 10 actually, I can't narrow it down.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,780 ✭✭✭speedboatchase

In most cases a lot of the "the noughties were crap" voices come from old grunge fans (Pearl Jam... jesus) or the worst kind of people, old ravers. Jaysus, I worked with a group of old ravers, in their 30s and they used to bring in the worst bloody cds. Would listen to Haddaway without a hint of irony. 00's are great

You guys, it's obviously Don't Stop Movin'- S Club 7.

Nah, I'd say it would be Beyonce-Crazy In Love or a bitta Coldplay.

People have been saying that music is getting worse, for the last 50 years at least, probably longer.

It's been proven that most people's music taste is more or less fixed by the age of 25, so of course new music isn't going to sound as good to you.

Plus, we only hear the good songs from the past. Hundreds are lost to time, so it seems like the percentage of good songs is higher, when really there was a large amount of crap, in every decade. Looking at my iPod, I have more songs from this decade, then all the other decades put together. I think it's been a great decade for music.

Your missing the point tho, the 00's and the internet has bought so much more music than previous decades, its just that mainstream music now is no longer dominated by the type of music that you used to like...

Bands like kings of leon, the killers, coldplay, greenday.... even the likes of nickleback ARE incredible artists.... numbers dont lie. When musicans first come to fame they dont start out with the legacy they have now... queen were only another rock band in the 70's/80's, it takes time.

Another point.... most of the people on here are just old bastards ! So obviously they are more fond of the music they listened to when they were youthful !!! HAHA I SAID IT !

I don't think X-Factor or American Idol has any effect on aspiring artists. The internet has made it a lot more accessible for such artists to reach an audience, but also more competitive - it's going to be a lot harder for an artist to 'stand out' from the crowd.

If people want to watch crap like x-factor then that's their business. The whole Jedwardmania thing was/is just very, very sad in fairness.

Song of the decade for me? This wins for me as it fits the bill as the 'Anthem of The Decade'...I'm going with a live version they did with Bowie..

I think a lot of the answers like this one are quite short-sighted in fairness, only remembering tracks from the last 2-3 years.

Yellow, Trouble and The Scientist were all out in the 00's and are just as good, if not better.

    The Climb - Joe McElderry.

Nah, just kidding. That was rubbish. :p

Since I haven't yet heard all songs from this decade, I shall reserve judgment.
on that note In the name of by Rage against the Machine. Know its a re release but still a great way to finish out the decade

see this is about opinion but none of those i would consider incredible artists, i like killers, own all their albums and every time i have seen them live have had a great time

green day are a 90s band for me, thats when they became big and thats when they did their best work

queen were huge in the 70s and 80s

incredible artists for me are the likes of the beatles and zeppelin

Which ever decade you're a teenager in is the one you're going to think is the best. You hear any old crap and to your young ears it sounds new and exciting. From then on that forms your blueprint for what's "good". If you hear something like it in ten years, then you just dismiss it as a copy, if you hear something genuinely new, chances are you just won't like it. I'm not criticising peoples taste here, I'm just saying how things are.

Back on track, one of the first things that comes to my mind when somebody says best of the 00s is this.

I'll let that PJ comment slide coz its Christmas....

And as a young 'grunge' fan I said I did like this decade, just preferred the 90's. As I said, there was some fantastic music this decade, just not as commercial.
