    You definitely deserved that.

It's not your place to start threads like that. And I hope you know that putting [STICKY] in the thread title doesn't make it a sticky. Were you expecting a little pat on the back from the mods or something?

I actually lol'd at that thread..

Wtf are we getting on Mike's case for? Get on my case, I said the same thing last night. Goodness.

I mean it wasnt a big subject of my Tuesday but Im sure since the weekend its been all the talk over there in Ireland? Im not criticizing the Mods though - its a once in 4 years event and the website has changed so much since then. Im just saying for future events; but you know yourself. Thats the last I'll say about it.
Its cool. It wasnt aimed at you, I just noticed Everybody who's mentioned him likes to tack on the fact that he's relatively new to the game.

Theres the point being made and then theres how the point is being made.

But here's the thing - there's a soccer forum for people interested in soccer, with mods who are interested in soccer.
If you're an AH mod, you shouldn't need to know about soccer, you should just know where to move the thread when it comes up.

But AH is a general interest forum, it should tolerate a certain level of discussion on everything

Agree that more mods would help, should be a team of people that works together in a consistent and reasonably transparent manner, too many mods shouldn't be an issue

yes and no. AH is the forum for all types of threads. That's its very nature. 99% of the threads on AH I'm sure could find their "proper place" in other forums. So for the minutiae of soccer or whatever, then yes you have the specialised forum and that's good, but whatabout those who dont want to go to the specific forum for any number of reasons. They may feel they dont have enough knowledge, or feel weird that it may be a bit cliquey. There are plenty of reasons.

I'd think putting a sticky at the top of the forum that lays down the rules with regards to what's acceptable and what's not is just as preemptive.
YOu would think so but clearly its not. If you do the same thing over and over again why be surprised when similar shítestorms happen over and over again?
I don't disagree with the idea of a future red flags thread, but look at what happened in the Leaving Cert forum earlier this year - you couldn't have predicted that. Equally, as has been said before, this wouldn't have been half as much of an AH topic if it wasn't for Henry.
No of course you cant catch all, but you may catch some. And I would still say it would have been a thread starter regardless of the result, just a lesser one.
Mods write the charter based on the requirements of boards and their users. Mods are well within their rights (if not obligated to) to apply the guidelines of the charter in a literal fashion.
again yes, but most dont read charters, including some mods BTW. Charters are all lovely but few read them. They're more a comfort to mods so they can have some backup for certain decisions. For users? Not so much. If 10% have read the charters in the various forums I would be gobsmacked.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Which is fair enough, and it's up to the AH mods to decide how flexible they want to be, but in the context of a thread that said "how dare mods move our threads and stop us discussing something", it's important to remember that there are guidelines in place.

We have a ban on discussion of Top Gear in the Motors forum because there's a Top Gear forum. No one has an issue with it. Every now and again a TG thread will pop up and you'll leave it because it's skirting the subject rather than being directly about the show.
You'll keep an eye on it though, because if it gets too specific you know there's a better home for it.

If the mods of AH allow banter about soccer or politics, then that's a judgement call on their behalf. If one or two mods are overwhelmed, I don't blame them for invoking the letter-of-the-law and moving/locking soccer threads. It's what I would have done too.

as usual another feedback thread ending with about 10 mods running down a complaint, dishing out thumbs up to one another and patting one another on the back, i suppose ye all meet up every now and then and act like proper little english poms drinking small sherrys and eating cucumber sandwiches.

"what'o chaps, i say i really sorted out that young ruffian on the after hours thread last night starting up a soccer thread in there"

"good show old man what did you do with the blighter ban him?"

"good gracious no man! that would be to good for the damned wretch. no i moved his thread to the soccer forum `gufaw gufaw` and the blighter had no access there. then i banned him for two weeks from the after hours thread!! what haw haw haw"

"i say splendid show old bean i dare say but you might just sneak that super mod job when it comes up ehh"

i really wish ye mods would just stop and act yere age (or maybe ye are) and cut a bit of slack around the forum
cos as far as i can see there is certain mods around here that are just on power trips
as for sending mods pm's alot of the time they refuse to answer
    why? i hear you ask
ans: because they know you are right and that they are wrong and god fobid if a mod admitted to being wrong on here:eek:

Have you read the same thread as the rest of us?
Some of us don't agree with each other.

DeVore isn't paying for cucumber sandwiches and sherry any more. Its now easi-singles and Tesco water bottled in India.

    +1

More mods are needed in AH. No one expects any mod to be on line 24 hours.
Even if they were only there in a part time capacity to help out when situations like last night occur.

there ye are off again making a big skit out of it. i really do think iam dealing with a shower of 7-8 year olds the only thing that makes me think ye are any older is that the word "monacles" would probably be to big for 7-8 year olds.

really where can a guy go for some civilised reaction around this forum

anyhow iam fcuking of to lunch might sit in with a bunch of kindergardeners some where and talk about life changing things like the price of crisps or something:mad:

    edit:
god i will probably get banned from feedback now for suggesting that ye have lower intelegence than "I"

Even Henry didn't know he was going to do it until milliseconds before hand.

i mean to say doctor doom (if indeed that is your real name) but it is as plain as the nose on your face just look at the second post in this thread and the mod that replied got 4 thumbs up from other mods

actually tis the same in nearly every thread on here where someone starts up complaining about something and a mod replies stating why it was wrong in the first place to start a thread like that or something and the rest of the mods can't wait to give them their thumbs up and it generally ends after a few pages with only mods quoting one another and adding +1 or giving thumbs up.

Actually over all in the history of the feedback forum the cats were very short experimental period.

lucky-colm there are mods who do disagree with how things were handled last night, I would be one of them.

You need to read the thread again.

I don't do soccer but even I knew that with there being a world cup qualifier on even with out any drama there would be AHers looking to talk about it.

AH like it or not is the front of house for the site and most people hit there first even coming in from google as it has such a vast stretch of topics and such a high turn over of posts.

The inappropriate racist and uncivil posts had to be dealt with, those that broke the site rules, and the mods were going to be busy with outraged idiots but I still think that locking the threads in the manner they were done was like the hydra's head, lock 1 and 3 more were started in protest.

So is AH a general current topic off the cuff forum or not?

A lot of the content from time to time in AH has been uncivil and the mods have been working on tackling that from racism to sexism, it's getting better but the mods and the posters have to work together.

I don't know what can be done, maybe AH needs to be rebooted.

Well since youre pointing a finger at me and my response to Ads By Google I'm going to tell you right now I've been banned I dont know how many times from Politics, PI, Ranting and Raving, AH, And Feedback. Probably a couple more I'm forgetting. I was even Sitebanned at one point.

My only point in saying that is if anyone was going to be shouting about a mod conspiracy, it would be me, and Im far from being some Mod Lackey. In fact its safe to say that Im quite intimate with how things are run around here for better or worse as a result. And I've had my fair share of conspiratorial pokes and Fight T3h Power binges.

All I did was give Ads an explaination as to why things were the way they are, and you're calling it a conspiracy? I assume I was thanked by the mods in that case because they would have told you the same thing - only evidently, they were busy as sin attending to other things. I told him these things so when a mod came around and said The Exact Same Thing we wouldnt have to read through 10 pages of conspiratorial garbage.

The thumbs up thanks feature was removed from feedback, but didn't really help anybody not having it

Well maybe there should be more cover in place for the future and to spread the work load of a busy forum out a bit. Will have to be done anyway if the site keeps growing.

Can see the problem that three or four mods might step on each others toes reading the same threads, which is maybe why it needs some sort of organised approach or solution, like mods leaving clear comments on threads and stating firmly the overall position (which does happen sometimes).
