Supreme Court rules in golf club's favour
    Tuesday, 3 November 2009 11:55

The Supreme Court has ruled that Portmarnock Golf Club can continue to exclude women as full members because it is exempted under equal status legislation.

The court, by a majority of three to two, upheld a decision by the High Court four years ago and dismissed an appeal by the Equality Authority.

This ruling centred on how a section of the Equal Status Act should be interpreted.

Women can play golf at the north Dublin course but cannot become full members.

In 2005, the High Court overturned a District Court decision and ruled that Portmarnock was not a discriminating club because its principal purpose was to cater only for the needs of a particular gender, an exemption allowed under the legislation.

The Supreme Court in a majority decision has upheld that ruling. Portmarnock can now continue to be a registered club - meaning it can continue to sell alcohol - without changing its membership policy.

A spokesman for the Equality Authority said the authority welcomed the fact that the Supreme Court had now clarified the law. He said the Oireachtas could now examine whether or not the Equal Status Act needed to be amended.

Joanna McMinn of the Equality Rights Alliance said the law needed to be changed and the decision was a bad day for equality and a bad day for women.

John Quigley, General Manager of Portmarnock Golf Club, said the club was pleased with the court's decision.

It is a man's club and not a golf club apparently.

    Curves
The chain of women’s-only fitness centres operates some 21 gyms all over Dublin. Locations include popular residential areas like Blackrock, Clontarf, Malahide, Dundrum, Sandyford, Terenure, Rathfarnham, Donnybrook and more.

I dont see any problem with this, there are 100 (wild guess) golf clubs within 20km of Portmarnock that woman can play on.

actually Curves is worse than the golf club as men are not only barred from being members, they are not allowed use the gym at all

in Portmarnock women can actually play the course

Would women ever get over themselves. They have their women only things and this particular club wants to cater to men only. That have every right to do so.

You need balls to play golf, and a big dangly club.

Sometimes men and women should do stuff without each other. You don't see blokes lining up to get into the Irish Countrywomen's Association.

They can also feck off with their women only car insurance too.

TotalFitness gyms also have a separate area for the fat chics ladies to exercise.

This is a good day for the men of Ireland.

    Curves
    Car Insurance
    A lot if beauty spa's
    A lot of waxers
    A lot of Masseurs

This is another example of selective feminism. Woman want to be treated equally to men, but only for the good stuff.

They should let be members of the Golf club, but from now on we won't pay for dinner or a movies on a first date. No longer hold doors open for them, and maybe they should carry us over the threshhold!

As far as I know the president of Ireland has automatic membership in Portmarnock. This rule dates back many years. I wonder will that still be the case?

    Cinema Prices at Cineworld:

Senior Citizen Price: Women 60+ and Men 65+

I emailed them and got this response:
With regards to the Senior Discount at our cinema, the standard age of
retirement is 60 years for women and 65 years for men. However, we are
aware that this is variable and are happy to offer any one who is
retired a concession ticket, on proof of retirement such as an OAP pass.

Going to email them back and tell them they should change it and stop this type of bullshit.

BTW, what is the deal with the 'standard age of retirement' being different between genders in the UK, and if anything (but it shouldn't) it could be skewed the other way as women live longer. They live longer because more is spent on their health care.

    Equality my bollocks.

The strange thing about cases like these is that is usually pussified men - male feminists - who are usually in the forefront of the campaign. The women aren't usually bothered - they have much more pressing things to worry about.

Last week, the big brouhaha in the US was over female White House staff not being invited to play basketball with the President. As usual, the women didn't care but it was other men using it as an excuse to attack the President.

That is due to change next year with full implentation by 2020.
    Retirement Age

The state retirement age is increasing:-
    * Current UK Retirement Age = Women Age 60 and Men Age 65
    * From 2010 the Retirement Age for Women will increase so that by 2020 it will also be aged 65, this will not affect women born before 1950
    * Women born after 6th April 1950 and 5th April 1955 will have a retirement age between aged 60 and 65
    * Women born from 6th April 1955 will have a retirement age of 65

And it doesn't stop there between 2024 and 2046 the retirement age for Both Men and Women is set to increase again to aged 68, again this will be a gradual increase so keep this in mind when arranging your pensions.

Why bother letting women play but not give them membership? What are the privilages of membership?

I suppose that depends on what the rules are for non members playing the course, are they entitled to just walk in & pay to play or do they have to be signed in by a member?

Presumably they don't have to pay the 12,000 joining fee, so maybe they're not all that pissed off about it.

There are yes. That is fair enough, also fair enough to have men only gyms btw.

Working out in a gym can be a bit personal, like toilets and showers. It's a physical thing.
Don't see how golf is the same though.

There's no women. It completely defeats the purpose of the club if they let women in.

I think this is taking things to far tbh, I'd love to see the list of women that actually want to join this club. There's nothing wrong with it being a men only club the same way there's nothing wrong with a womens only club. There usually specialised interest clubs and if the golf club was the only one around they'd have something to argue. There's nothing stopping them from forming their own unofficial club where they can do lady things.

Why can't a club pick its own members though? Is it really that big a deal, or is the indignation (not from you) just "because"? OK, so you don't understand why they might want a place "for the lads", but what's the point of forcing them to admit women members when it's clear they don't want to. Who's going to gain anything from that, other than a hollow victory?

I doubt that the only "women only" clubs / associations are gyms, or where they might feel physically self-conscious for some reason. I don't include car insurance in that, as that's just marketing.

Interestingly, an article in the Irish Times says that no women have ever complained about being refused membership in Portmarnock. As I said, maybe they're happy to not fork out 12K, and to leave the old fashioned guys to themselves.

It is apparently a tradition at Portmarnock that the President of Ireland is given an honorary membership of the club. This honorarium was instituted at a time when it would have been inconceivable that a mere woman would have broken into the all-male club of Irish Presidents.

Ironically, there is not a great deal going on in Portmarnock Golf Club on a Saturday night...one of the disadvantages of no lady members.

So women have their own gyms because a select few of them might feel a little self conscious in a unisex gym? You do realise men can feel self conscious too? It's a 'physical' thing.
