    6ix,

After a transfer has completed I expected to be able to tap on the green box on my SGS screen with the filename on it and it would open the file but when I try to do that the screen goes black for a second then an icon pops up saying "file not found". Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
    Ben
I copied over an APK, and tapping on the file seems to launch the associated application. So are you sure that the application associated with the file you transferred over is installed/available? Are there extended characters i nthe filename, such as underscores etc?

No, I'm using a Desire, but it should work the exact same way. Once the transfer completed I just clicked on it and it opened.

Maybe see if you can find the file in your storage. If you use a file manager like Astro, navigate to your SD card and there should be a folder called 'drop'.

Awesome Drop makes the folder automatically when you use it and all transferred files go into that folder.

Estrongs might be easier, it can scan for a shared folder on your pc and install the apk from there.

Quickmark, not only reads QR codes/barcodes but can also generate them from your contacts or apps etc.

BTW, has anyone come across an app that can decode QR images? They are fine when scanned but useless when browsing on the phone...

Not an app, but very handy all the same; create a shortcut to -

    http://mobile.xmarks.com/

and all of your Xmarks sync'd bookmarks are available on your phone.

Maybe it's been discussed before but what are the best alternatives to Astro? I held off the recent update because people were complaining about it containing ads (I really can't stand ads in my apps).

The version I have now has become fairly unusable because it keeps telling me it's expired the whole time and I have to wait ages for that message to go away before I can do anything. I was just going to pay for the pro version but have read that even that contains ads so there's not a chance I'm going near that.

Has anyone used "Wheres my Droid" app? (Apologies if this has been posted before!)

Downloaded it last night, but haven't really had time to set it up.

I've got it. Thankfully i've only ever had to use it when I put my phone on silent and it's in the bedroom.

The only downside is if you're in a meeting and you've left the code word as 'Wheres my droid' and someone text's you that. Grrrrr.

    Anyone use appbrain?
Thought I could use it to buy paid alps but it's not working

AppBrain is just for tracking and sharing your applications.

Speaking of which, I came across a cool apps listing app on XDA yesterday : http://brian.onmix.co.uk/myappslist (blog post)

Use Estrongs also, does the job excellently and has no ads. I also moved from astro once ads came in, tried a few and stayed with Estrongs.

I have Apps Organiser installed. However, the number of "labels" or icons which it gives you is very limited. Can anyone recommend a good icon pack without having to install a replacement for sense UI, i.e. launcher pro etc.

Also, and excuse my ignorance, but is there a place I can download apps other than the market without rooting the phone (htc Desire:D:D:D).

    Thanks.

Is it just me? The market links don't work....

****e, it looks like Wordpress is removing the "market" prefix. It should be market:// ...

It does work when exported as an HTML file though - http://bcpk.org/myappslist.html

Looking for an app to share my PC's LAN Internet Connection with my phone - NOT WiFi Tethering which is the other way around. Out on site I have no access to WiFi or 3G but we do have a Ethernet wired connection. Is this possible?

Also, is Nimbuzz my best option for doing Skype calls at the moment?

Just tried it there and it's worked for me. At what stage in the process is it not working. I'm assuming you've got the DDMS running, it's just not picking up your phone??

    complete android noob alert !!

I installed the software, opened the tools folder, ran the DDMS as an admin, opened a cmd window then the programe opened up in front of it, never detected the phone. Before i plugged the phone in to the laptop i turned on debugging, when it was connected the phone gave me the usual options, charge only, dick drive, debug etc, tried all those setting but still would not appear in the device list. Vista btw.

I did the exact same thing and it just worked. I did however have a temporary issue with one of my USB cables. It didn't connect properly and as such the phone didn't notify me that USB debugging was connected. Other than a simple connection failure like that I'm at a loss. I'm running Vista too, so at least that's not the problem.
