    ive no problem someone taking time off work if thier depressed , i dont however believe the state has any responsibility to compensate someone for having depression

    The same as you are entitled to benefits if you need them , if that time comes you will aslo love it.

    You're actually very wrong - I was made redundant and I did not apply for jobseeker's benefit as not to demotivate me from looking for a new job. Which I found - I really made an effort - and all is fine again.

    He was demotivated enough not to find a job for 5 long years. Surely his wife was not depressed for 5 years, she also seems to have quite a lot of spirit in what she says in both articles and how. They gave up their council house, went house jumping for all kinds of excuses and now went to the press to get another free council house - presumably on their own conditions since they've already rejected one on the grounds that they didn't like the area.

    Their attitude is unbelievable. Yes they went through hard times initially but they kept rejecting what they were generously given and still come back for more.

    entitled?

    he went from a 25000 before tax job to an 25000 with no tax welfare (that doesnt include rent or children's allowance btw)

    are you blind to the obvious scam here :eek:

    I can see the figures you quote , but I don't think there is a scam going on. I don't get enraged about things as easy as you. I still think he is genuine , I may be wrong . My point is that it is the system that is wrong , the system that he has used because of the way life has unfolded for him. Attack the system if you want but your not willing to see this point.

    I am not going to question your figures , they maybe right , they may not. I don't really care. The the man has made a decision to quit 3 jobs so as to be at home with his sick wife and his kids . How many kids he has is irrelevant in my eyes. Child benefit is paid equally no matter what your financial status in this country. Woman on 100K a year with 6 kids gets the same as man on the dole . Flawed system ? . The man and I think I have said it a few times , is only claiming what he is entitled to. If you think it is too much then fine take it up with the government. You can not accuse the man of being a scrounger without assuming that all social welfare receipients are scroungers. Is everyone who gets benefit milking the system , yes some are as the system is flawed in so many ways. Some are not , as I beleive is the case here , I would probably make the same decisions as he has made being in his shoes. I can feel the mans desperation from the posts he has made , he is at his wits end , I have been homeless at times in my life and I can tell you that it is the most terrifying , humiliating thing that any human has to endure , try adding a wife that suffers from depression , a terrible sickness and 6 kids into the equasion and as a person with a heart I feel for him . The man was holding down jobs when he had 5 kids , he couldn't continue that and I can fully understand why having been in a relationship with a person who suffered from depression , a person that couldn't mind themselves let alone a child.

    He says he wants to work , I beleive him , any man would want to , its engrained in us to provide . He has chosen family over work. He contributed to society while working and though you may not think it he still does , the money he gets from the state goes back into the economy in some form or other , as does the money that is provided to all social welfare receipients. Its just harder for people to acknowledge this . To have a witchhunt because the rag that is the sunday Independant printed a story show s alack of intelligence for many . Fair paly to the man for coming on here and trying to give his side of the story . For that and his willingness to stick by his family when many men , and it happens all too often in this country would have fooked off by now.

    I think people should be more sympathetic to his plight , I for one can empathise.

    you sure are good at rationalising , il give you that

    Do you think he was right or wrong ( be it him or the system) to give up a council house?

    The system is messed up

    but go back a few pages in this thread when we were discussing ethics and an example was made of a wallet falling on the ground

    I understand a person being entitled to welfare after loosing a job

    But this guy quit his job so he can get more on welfare for doing nothing than he was making by working his arse of

    and then he goes and has the cheek to ask the council to pay for an 8 bed house

    this just spits in the face of all the people there who work hard and pay taxes

    and it gives a bad name to all the people who genuinely need welfare

    the this guy "fumes" over being called a 'Welfare scrounge' to the papers and then by posting here

    seriously now this is a pistake being taken to a whole new level

    btw i contacted the papers and told them to read this thread, this story definitely needs a follow up

    Good for you , but what if that job did not materilise , would you still be holding out .

    You clearly have no concept of depression , some people go through life suffering from it , pills can hhelp but not all . They, I can't be sure on this left Moyross , trust me I would too if I had a young family .
    Their attitude is unbelievable. Yes they went through hard times initially but they kept rejecting what they were generously given and still come back for more.

    What more are they looking for , they are getting the benefits that are due to them , they are looking for housing , any housing to quote Ger.

    Exactly. There's been plenty of times when I've told people who were too proud to claim not to be idiots, especially when they were the ones funding the system for others for yeras. But if you deliberately quit your job because you think the taxpayer can give you a better deal, then that's simply thievery in my opinion.

    Except housing in Moyross of course. Now I wouldn't go begrudging anyone for not wanting to live in that hole, but from the sounds of it, they were comfortably able to afford better out of the money they were getting, but they thought they'd go cap in hand with a sob story to the papers and end up with an extra grand's worth of luxuries at the taxpayer's expense every month. If it was just about benefits they were entitled to, then there would be no need to try and gain media sympathy to strongarm the council. No harm to see that that plan backfired.

    PS: You've got to love the socialist mantra that nothing's too good for someone living off someone else's expense.

    hows this for a story of 2 sides

    Exibit A - Ger's Family
    * 8 bed house paid by council until recently in clare
    * 6 kids and whatever welfare (~1000)
    * sick wife at home requiring healthcare
    * dole @ €482 * 52 = €25,064
    * free full medical healthcare courtesy of state

    Exibit B - Honest Family
    * 8 bed in clare (@€;600K cheapest 8bed i could find in clare none in same area) that works out at mortgage payment of €2000 a month
    * 6 kids and whatever welfare (~1000)
    * sick wife at home requiring healthcare
    * VHI Family Plan for 2 adults + 6 kids = €2,684 a year

    the man would need a after tax income of €29,748 (€2,684 + €2000 + €25,064)

    thats means Honest Man needs to hold a fulltime job of €37,000 before tax to pay for family + healthcare + mortgage

    So Ger gets the same benefits for doing nothing as

    as Honest Man who is working full time for €37000 a year

    Hey listen, I know where you're coming from. I just try to give the benefit of the doubt is all :rolleyes:
    I too, as with all of us, could scam the system. I work with a girl who is claiming single parent allowance ( 2 kids), living with a guy who claims the dole and he is also doing nixers. She has a council house and spends hundreds on constantly doing up her house while I'm struggling to pay my mortgage! It drives me crazy!!

    how can one be due more in benefits than his salary before tax?

    and why does one make 6 kids and then expect the state to provide an 8bed house costing north of 600K?

    THIS FAMILY HAS SCAMMED YOU, ME AND EVERY TAXPAYER AND WELFARE RECIPIENT OUT THERE

    shame!
