Was playing 'Sega Rally' on the PS3 yesterday, picked it up dirt cheap in Cex.

In a world of overly tedious racing sims, a full on comedy physics arcade racers is a total joy to play :)

The studio that made it folded afterwards, no one bought the thing.
Of course, it then became part of Codemasters.
Looking it up, Sega Rally 3 was initially released in 2011 on the 360 and PS3 via digital marketplaces but got delisted within a year.
You can only find it in the occasional arcade now, that version released in 2008, not common.

Everdrive 64 arrived today so I've been playing the fan translation of Wonder Project J2. What an absolute gem of a game. I really enjoyed the first game but J2 seems so much better so far.

There's a real Studio Ghibli vibe to the game with the gorgeous 2D animation, the obsession with mechanical design and airplane dog fights and also just the great characters that inhabit the world. Wonder Project J2 is the closest you'll get to a Studio Ghibli game outside of the Megaman Legend games. The 2D art is gorgeous (although the 3D that pops up occasionally might be the grossest on the N64).

They've really changed up the gameplay as well. The first game has you completing a certain task per chapter. This one has a list of about 30 tasks, all hidden and all of which can be completed in a non-linear fashion. The stats are now all hidden which would be a problem except apparently you can't level down stats which is a god send.

    What if it though?
What exactly do you do in the game?
I looked at the wiki and I'm still unclear!

It's very hard to explain since there's absolutely nothing out there like it other than the first game. You're basically training a robot girl to be more human and fit but there's also a story happening in the background with a lot of civil unrest against the government.

At the request of my missus (as it's her favourite game) I started one of my secret shame games this evening - Grim Fandango. Feck me is it hilarious! 'I can't believe I haven't played this before' levels of hilarious.

It's on my shame list as well :(

Also found out my N64 memory pak is a cheap third party one using battery back up to keep saves meaning all my wonder project j2 progress got wiped. Thank god the everdrive can back up saves and getting back to where I was in the game didn't take too long.

Just played through a single season on Super Monaco GP on the Mega Drive (first time ever completing one, actually). I finished 2nd overall.

Ive gone back to playing a Combat Flight Simulator called Super EF2000 which came bundled with my first Windows 95 PC!
Playing it using the Thrustmaster T.Flight HOTAS mapped with JoyToKey on a 50" plasma TV.

It just has a certain charm to it modern sims like DCS can't match.

This sim was way ahead of its time, it came with keyboard layouts printed on glossy posters, and the manual for the thing is inanse.

The graphics were amazing for the time - you can see the full cockpit in all its detail from outside the plane, a rarity in those days even in car games, they just had opaque windows.
And the scale of the open world is huge too, loading times were quick.

It may look low on the polygon count these days but the detail blew me away back then.

The funny thing is it was released before the Eurofighter Typhoon even went into service.

Its a really diverse sim and even has a generated Campagin mode.

I loved Flight Unlimited by Looking Glass, a fantastic series of flight sims for the PC.
It was a real antidote to the Flight Sim series by MS.
While the latter franchise had you flying jets over a relatively featureless planet should you choose to do so, Flight Unlimited focused on slower planes over a much more detailed compact locations.
The original was great but the second and third games really took it to the next level and, opening both, it opened up much of the US west coast for exploration.
Great fun, particularly in the little amphibious plane so you didn't have to worry too much about runway headings!

The land textures look class in Flight Unlimited, looks great for its time too.

Ive been playing a little bit of IL-2 Sturmovnik on the PS3 also, still have Birds Of Prey on the backlog.

War thunder on the PS4 is a bitch to set controls for, theyre just too many where as IL-2 is pretty much plug and play.

Im definitely thinking of going with a PC rig for VR now, simulators will shine the most in VR and I would miss some of the ones not available on PS4.

Might wait a year or so for VR to become optimized though.

Apparently the guy behind flight unlimited was obsessed with creating accurate physics models in his games which is why flight unlike mixed is so detailed. He's also the reason most looking glass games have very complex physics simulations way before other games implemented them.

Went on to create Jurassic Park Trespasser, a game that was basically built around its complex physics model years before the likes of havok. It was way ahead of its time and also way too ambitious and ended up a disaster but one that inspired the likes of Halo and Half Life 2

The second game took the original and based it all around the bay area of California, the third one acted as both standalone and mission pack, expanding the terrain to include all the way to Seattle, tons of landscape, rivers and lakes to peel around in your plane, plus paper maps to use, including air control boundaries and radio frequencies for those with no life to speak of.

Finished Shovel Knight the other day. Probably the first game since Body Blows on the Amiga where I was close to flinging the controller against the wall. :pac:
Not a fan of the Plague Knight DLC but it was a great game overall. Might pick up the Mega Man Legacy Collection or Axiom Verge next.

Apparently there is more free DLC to come in Shovel Knight,

Which version did you finish, as a matter of interest?
I have digital copies on both the WiiU and 3DS, must supplement them with the real deal.

Started Final Fantasy Tactics again this week. Playing the PSP version. Either I'm much better at the game or they did some severe rebalancing of the fights in the game as I'm getting through it at a good pace. When I played this game first it was pretty much the toughest RPG I'd ever played with some incredible difficulty spikes.

One other great thing about the PSP version is the translation. The original game was a mess that made absolutely no sense with typos and just garbage dialogue that was barely English. The new one is trying to go for a faux Jonathan O. Smith vibe and while not on his level of translation skill it's still a pretty decent job. The story actual makes sense now.

I'd forgotten just how dark this game is as well. It's based on the War of the Roses so you are basically getting Game of Thrones except a far better and less dumb version than GoT presents.

It was on PS4 (probably because it was cheaper than the Ninty versions at the time). I might get the boxed version on 3DS at some stage though, nice game to have in the collection. Hadn't heard about the new DLC either actually, nice that it'll be free again.

I hope Yacht Club Games have made a lot of money out of Shovel Knight. The game is amazing and they keep producing DLC but don't charge for it. Of course, free DLC is great but I hope they don't stretch themselves too far.

I suppose it extends the life of the product.
Certainly, as a business, they have to be making money from the game, and make more for the effort of the dlc.
The Amiibo is lovely too btw

Halfway through the second chapter of Final Fantasy Tactics. Forgot just how good the game is. Even the random battles are fun since you are constantly working towards new upgrades or jobs. Borrowing the job system from FF5 was a stroke of genius.

It took me 22 years, but I finally finished Flashback on the Mega Drive. I avoided finishing this game for so long for no reason at all. But I powered through it and finished it today. Another retro game completed this year. I'm on a role :P

I've just finished a run through smw, nearly twenty five years since I first played it. What a game, definitely top five games of all time material. I've just started Twilight Princess on Wii U and I'm currently in the Forest Temple, it looks great so far.
