There was more than a few profanities, a lot of dying, some googling around the 90 mark and there probably would have been hair pulling if I had any to pull. It was worth the effort though, the next snes game up is Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts.

I'll deduct a few small points on you for googling :p How we managed to 96 it back in the days before internet is beyond me, doubt I could do it today from memory. As you said, top 5 game of all time...to think that was a launch game is insane.

Super Ghouls & Ghosts next? So Super Mario World was nothing but but a warm up!

Only real gamers have gotten all 96 exits.

    Isn't that right o1s1n?

  • I've just finished a run through smw, nearly twenty five years since I first played it. What a game, definitely top five games of all time material. I've just started Twilight Princess on Wii U and I'm currently in the Forest Temple, it looks great so far.

I missed a few of the normal break the tape exits in Star World, by using the secret exit the normal exit wasn't counted. Once I found that out I just redone the normal exits and finished the first castle in world seven to save.

Fired up Super Mario World last night to see how my '96 exit shame' progress was. Seems I'm only on 70 at the moment

Going to really hit it hard over the next week and see if I can get the remaining 26. No shameful guides will be used :D

There's one absolute ballox of one in the Bowser cave, good luck finding it. The colour of the stages on the world map let you know if there's a second exit.

Ahhh I was wondering how to figure out if there was another exit other than seeing areas of the world map that are inaccessible!

Thought I was just going to have to replay every single level again to make sure I got them all.

The levels where you need a cape and yoshi are a pain, lose one and back to a different level to restock.

Yeah, I came to that tidbit of knowledge a bit late myself when playing it. Mind, having an excuse to horse through SMW again isn't the worst thing in the world.

I am currently playing "GP2X: The unbrickening", one of the most exciting games I've played this year so far!

I hear the sequel is pretty good as well, "GP2X: Challenge of the bricks, the firmware tales 4.1.0"

Speaking of bricks, I've been playing both arcade and NES versions of Tetris the last few nights (courtesy of the Pi3). Still as addictive as ever, one of the true great games imo. The World Championships are coming up the end of October too so will keep an eye on that - https://ecstasyoforder.vhx.tv/updates/tetris-world-championship-press-opportunity

Funnily enough I've been playing a bit of Tetris myself over the last few nights. Dug the DMG01 out of storage and lashed in a few batteries. Still stupidly addictive!

That's interesting about the World Championships, will keep an eye out for that too. After watching some insane Grandmaster videos on youtube I'd love to see some performance like that live.

Cidonalad continues to make me look bad, while I grab a quick 5 minutes, negotiating not the corners in GT6 but mostly the esoteric menu system, he is finishing games left right and centre, he got all the no kill trophies in Dishonored, Clean hands, Cleaner hands and Cleanest hands... it's not fair!!

My retropie bug continues. Played through arcade Final Fight last night. There's no way in hell you could complete this on one credit.

Also gave Double Dragon 2 a bash (much prefer the first one). I did play this in the arcade back in the day but don't remember the buttons performing different actions depending on which way you faced ? May be an emu issue.

I'm playing through Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts at the moment. I can manage to make it through the first loop on the one credit, the hardest thing for me is trying to keep the concentration level up. It's just coming up to the twenty fifth anniversary of the first release in Japan, if ever a game punished mistakes this was it. Well worth a play through if you have the time, especially now that it's heading for Halloween.

The one thing that annoys me about super GnG is the Red arremer AI. It's much worse than in the original and can get itself into dumb positions where you can't hit it and have to wait for it to come out of it. Also not being able to aim up makes them even more annoying.

Don't get me started on them, they have to be the most unpredictable enemies in the game. There's nothing worse than one knocking your armour off and you end up picking up a crap weapon, it has ended games for me at times. I try to keep them at bay by double jumping and using the crossbow at the highest point of the jump.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,408 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Crossbow seems to be the only decent weapon against them. They're not too bad in the original but on super they keep getting stuck in the ground.

Retro Series, not so Retro game - Wolfenstein The New Order.

Been playing it the last month and by god is it an excellent modern classic fps, if that makes any sense!

Despite a slow start to the game it has completely exceeded my expectations.

Absolute no nonsense gameplay, backed up by a great story, possibly the best acting and story ive seen in this style actually, dual wielding guns with both triggers feels awesome.
Looking forward to playing The Old Blood also.

Makes me wish id software bought the Duke Nukem I.P. only they could save that game now I feel.
Would never thought I'd see the day where i suggested 3D Realms arch rival would save Duke Nukem!

    Yeah
To have the current Wolfenstein team make a Duke game would be ideal, but could it happen?
It'd be like Naughty Dog making a decent 3D Sonic game... now there's an idea!

They are bit older but The Gaming Historian's videos on the history of Wolfenstein are some of his best one's imo. All the information about Silas Warner is fascinating and 90% of it I had never heard before.

Been playing Flatout 2 today the PC version, which I bought for €1.60 bundled with lots of other racers here:

    https://www.bundlestars.com/en/bundle/born-2-race-3-bundle

The game still looks fantastic to this day despite being a decade old.

The handling is real smooth, the tracks are diverse and have alternative pathways.

At first glance I thought it would be a burnout clone, but it stands out on its own.

Plenty of cars to keep it interesting, a derby mode and bizarre stunt mode.

Most fun racer ive played in a while.

Bugbear, the Flatout developers, went on to develop Ridge Racer Unbounded for Namco.
And what a pile of ass that was.
It never got a release in Japan, bizarre for a major Jap IP, and was entirely different from every RR title that came out before or since.
The destruction mechanic was all over the place, making the game needlessly complex and awkward, when other games were streamlining their controls, but keeping innovation, liked Split Second.
Bugbear probably helped make Ridge Racer the low value property it now is, as a result.

I'm on my 1st run through of Ys the Vanquished omen emulated on the Raspberry Pi but am loving it so will be keeping my eye out for physical copy in the future.

Chugging away at Super Mario World. On 76 exits so a good way to go yet.

Still determined not to use a guide, but it's proving to be a little head scratching at times. I've hit pretty much all of the levels with a red dot for the second exit, really doesn't fee like there should be another 20 waiting out there!

Have you done star world yet? Plenty of second exits there and 8 new levels.

Found the bridge second exit and getting to the backdoor in bowsers cave a pain to find, also don't forget the secret exits in the forest of illusion and chocolate land count (one nefarious chocolate land level is based on what time you leave each area of the level).
