This is a preview of something I'm working on at the moment, my first real attempt at remixing a vocal in to a track. I think it might be a bit too high in the mix at the moment. Any feedback would be much appreciated!

Yeah, definitely a bit high. More importantly though, I don't think the vocal is in tune with the bass.

Sorry dude, but I just don't get this one. The skips and sample chopping is just way too extreme to form any kind of coherent track for my taste.
But hey, that's just my opinion. I admire the actual techniques you've used, just not the final product. (Jeez, what a crank am I?)

yeah the actual track is lost in a mess of sound, ive already started fixing and heavily refining it

alright, so I took my last song down cos I always rush and export tracks way too early... ive decided to break the habit and spent a good while extra working on that track... So I did and probably tripled the amount of material in it,,
I'd say this is definitely my most interesting track yet, Its called Vox not Requiem :
    https://soundcloud.com/kersh-2/requiem

p.s id describe its structure as a selection of plants all from the same seed rather than the usual one big tree

Some very interesting sounds, and the quality of the samples is good (to my ear anyway)

Probably a bit too experimental and leftfield for my own personal taste.

Im getting a real Ghost in the Shell Vibe off it. Very early 90s FSOL also.
I agree with Mordeith, cant fault your selection of sounds or your production.
Not sure it works as a standalone piece but it seems to be a very Future Sound of London type album track.
    Nice work.
Have to considered editing it down to about 4 mins to really highlight the best parts of the track?

thanks ,Its more of demonstration of sound, a collation of little ideas that tessellate to some extent.
I used lots of small samples from the Akira and Ghost in Shell osts (very perceptive , you must be fan!) them Japanese composers make some truly beautiful stuff , the vocalists are so talented too, I feel that In some sense that I'm just ruining the originals, why change something thats perfect.

yeah I have plans for this track, rather than condensing it, ill take the best aspects and extend them into there own tracks, it was milestone for me to successful combine different vocal samples and have it sound harmonic.
I could do so much more with those vocal samples , and I dont think I projected it enough in this one track.

I *love* the sound of real drums in a track - you can't beat it imo so you get bonus points for that :pac:

I don't like the way you just start with the drums though I think the tune needs to get going quicker. For me the track only got going after the 2 minute mark - before that I really felt it was lacking mid range wellie.... also I really don't like those stabs that come in at 1.57 with the vocal... that vibe really reminds me of browsing for a pair of jeans in Jack and Jones or something.

There's lots I like a lot about this track but there's a lot I don't like about it too... I like the elec piano vibes you got going on at 3.17 for example, and I like the conga drums but you need to work these off the drum beat a bit better i think

A lot of this is just my opinion and it's a taste / personal work method thing (as a producer) and I could be waaaaaay off the mark so find out what other people think of it before you decide you agree with me or that I am talking through my hoop!!

    Cheers for the feedback

The reason for the long intro and not much happening at the start is for me to use when djing

"that vibe really reminds me of browsing for a pair of jeans in Jack and Jones or something."

Haha I'll take that as a compliment as that's what I was going for, it's suppose to be kind of loungey.

I can see what you mean about the conga drums.

Lovely mellow track. Only slight suggestion I'd have is to bring up the voume of that sub bass layer. Really good sound there and I'd like to hear it a bit more in the mix.

The hihat seems too loud to me, although I'm not into this type of music so don't know what it usually sounds like!

    Hey folks.

Been working on this for about 2/3 weeks. Getting close to being happy with the core of the whole track but I'm not sure if the main pluck lead is big enough or even strong enough? I tried adding some bottom notes and layering with other instruments, but then it just ends up having a totally different vibe. I also find the pluck may have to much reverb...

    Criticism appreciated! :)

Yeah, I think you're right about the pluck. It sounds a bit reedy. Would be perfect if it was an extra elements with another main lead sound. How is the pluck generated. Could you replicate it using a different oscillator shape to give it more of an edge maybe?

It's a basic Nexus synth lead with reduced decay and increased envelope to make it sound like a pluck. Nexus isn't great for those better options. I'll give massive a shot and see what happens. Just needed to see if anyone else felt the same way about the pluck. Back to the drawing board! :)

    Thanks bud!

    Very similar!

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,431 ✭✭✭Sky King

That's a nice tune. There's a lot going on in the high end though... thin plucky lead, very hissy hats / shaker and a thin 'swish' sound as well as the tambourine.

Changing up some of that might open out the tune in the way that you want. Maybe even just take something out if the EQ isn't doing it. Sometimes less is more.!

Here's a track I made a little while ago - never got round to putting it on youtube until now. Video I cut from 'Akira' which suits my tune I think!!

All comments, feedback and youtube thumbs up appreciated of course!!

Nice funky feel to that, great job on the vocals, I like the way you treated them. The sound really really suits the picture too (reminds me of Kraftwerks original Autobahn video). How would I describe it, shiny plastic '80s synth goodness...

I love the punchy percussion throughout. I also like the voacals but the attack and decay seems a bit too sharp on some of the slices. Nice arrangement and good choice of sounds throughout, even if that high pad that comes in a 2.56 is a bit teeny bit grating.
    Nice one :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,431 ✭✭✭Sky King

    Chairz for that, lads.

I wasn't 100% on that pad but I tweaked it until I was (reasonably) happy with it. Hmm....
