I dont want to sound like a conspirosy theorist, but this month so far Toms PWE Tips have been a lot better than his paper tips. I wonder is this always the case? I dont have enough stats to know , but a few things occurred to me.
If you were the Editor of the Post it would certainly suit you a lot better if the free tips were not as good as the subscription service. In actual fact , if the free tips were BETTER than the subscription service, that would cause a problem.
With PWE, Tom has a lot more time and information to make the selections. So if it worked out over the longer term that his PWE tips were always better ,that could also account for the difference.
Its hard to say with any degree of certainty which is better , but I seem to remember that his record on Sundays , when he rarely writes a column is great.

I think the issue for Tom when tipping in the paper is that he has to produce a selection in at least one of the main televised races.

In previous interviews that I've read, he has admitted that he may not necessarily have a bet on all horses that he has analysed for the paper. Only last week he was commenting in the Racing Post that 2yo races at this time of year were not reallly his thing, but yesterday was "obliged" to offer up a tip in the Racing Post Trophy.

I agree that his Pricewise Extra tips are far more likley to be selections that he would bet on himself as he has no restrictions i.e. the right shape of race and not necessarily on big race tv.

Having said that, only a few weeks ago Tom tipped Baldemar (33-1 in to 18-1) in the Ayr Bronze Trophy and Kaldoun Kingdom (12-1 in to 8-1) for the Ayr Silver Trophy. Both of these were in the Racing Post newspaper.....

None today. Apparently, Mel Cullinan is tipping for Pricewise Extra today?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 127 ✭✭winslow

Also, if he is under time constraints due to the newspaper being printed, he won't always know the ground conditions as they may change overnight.

Giving his PWE choices at noon, he has a better idea of conditions and prices than he would the day before when choosing his paper tips.

That's quite a disappointment. I am in Canada, so no access to the RP newspaper. I went to bed late last night, but set the alarm for 5am to get the paper tips here, hoping someone would post them. I didn't realize the U.K. turned the clocks back last night, and now to hear that Tom may not be offering any tips for PWE is even worse!

No. As I mentioned earlier, Mel Cullinan is tipping today as Pricewise Extra.

Can I ask how you know that? Unfortunately our man with the subscription, Seanohea hasn't turned up yet.

His paper tips have to be issued before the paper gets printed. The PW-E ones he gets to sleep on and take another look at 5 hours before the race. I think everyones tips would be better the closer to the race I put them up.

Mel Cullinan is a regular writer in the Racing Post and has a tipping column in the Weekender. He also tips on about 5-6 races daily in their spotlight column. Has been writing for the Post for about 20 years so clearly has years of experience and knows what he is talking about. Whether he is good enough for this service remains to be seen as personally I've never really followed his tips.

Having said that, I've backed both of his 2 today and just got the prices with Totesport and William Hill so fingers crossed!

Not a good day for the "stand-in" Pricewise Extra tipster! Leac An Scail was being pushed along some way out and finshed a well beaten 5th. His second selection Astrobar fell at the 2nd fence!:mad::mad:

I know its late in the day and may make little sense, but i'm going to post up the tips as they were on the site anyway, at least you can see what mel cullinan said. I didnt back them, i'm a Tom Segal follower, this guy has no record on pricewise extra, so i didnt think it was worth it.

    Pricewise Extra

bl_mel_cullinan_50.jpg The world's No. 1 tipping service has a daily crack at the bookmakers' early prices
Leac An Scail on an enticing mark at Aintree
    Leac An Scail
    2.45 Aintree
    1pt win at 10-1 generally
Leac An Scail has plenty going for him at a best-priced 10-1 in the Liverpool Volkswagen Handicap Hurdle (2.45) at Aintree today, writes Mel Cullinan.
In a race in which plenty of the runners look weighted to the hilt, Leac An Scail is on a very enticing mark on some of his form over hurdles from the last couple of seasons, notably last November's second in an above-average race for the track at Sedgefield.

    RELATED LINKS

That run followed a good effort when third on his reappearance in this very race, when he might well have been closer too if his 7lb claiming amateur rider had asked him to closein earnest a bit sooner.
Leac An Scail won on his reappearance in 2007, so he clearly goes well fresh, while Sue Smith's string, though yet to hit top gear, has been ticking over and had a 7-1 winner last week.
Though Leac An Scail has an indifferent strike-rate - two from 22 - prices comfortably into double figures more than accomodate that fact.

    Leac An Scail
    Aintree - 2:45
    No Betting

    Pricewise Extra

bl_mel_cullinan_50.jpg The world's No. 1 tipping service has a daily crack at the bookmakers' early prices
Astarador can maintain Johnson's fine form
    Astarador
    3.20 Aintree
    1pt win at 7-1 generally
Astarador is worth backing at a best-priced 7-1 to take the Radio City 96.7 Handicap Chase (3.20) at Aintree this afternoon, writes Mel Cullinan.
With Howard Johnson's string in fine form this autumn and a good record when fresh - including two wins on his seasonal debut - the signs are very promising for Astarador being fully primed for this afternoon's decent prize.

    RELATED LINKS

He is also on a mark he is well capable of winning off, particularly on such form as his Musselburgh second in February, when giving top novice Kalahari King a good race.
The one appreciable doubt about today's race concerns the presence of other potential pacesetters in Dev, Safari Adventures and, possibly, Saphir des Bois too.
However, Denis O'Regan is a top, experienced rider who will surely be fully alive to the danger of blasting off too fast in a battle for the lead, particularly as there has been plenty of comment already - in the Racing Post Spotlight, for example - about the danger of that happening.
If that doubt is removed from the equation, then 7-1 is over the odds about Astarador.

    Astarador
    Aintree - 3:20
    No Betting
