Why were the pool tables removed from the lounge? The "lounge" now consists of just couches and tables which is quite dissappointing. The amount of people who do not stay in college during free time is quite high already and the fact that the lounge is now quite dull is a further push factor. I understand that peope like to relax and societies have meetings etc but there is plenty of room to incorporate a pool table aswell as the tables and chairs. Some sort of activity that would attract people to the lounge, even a dart board would work wonders imo. The more people that hang around college the better for everyone! Seems to me and alot of people I have spoken to that the SU are only suiting there own needs.

I don't see much of the prez or vice-prez wandering around either although I'm sure they have work to adhear to. I have passed both of them twice in an empty hallway and they both stared at the ground instead of saying a simple hello. I'm not trying to moan but just a bit dissappointed with the whole formality surrounding the place this year.

    * Any word of an indoor soccer tournament or anything in the works??

I don't know anything about this 'pool' game you mention, something involving swimming I imagine. So I'll just quote this:

Well in fairness I think they've done more at this point in the year than some would have done by Xmas or even the whole year. Regarding the friendliness/unfriendliness I can't personally reflect your sentiments, but I know that I often find it hard to decide whether to say to hello to somebody or not when I'm walking along an empty corridor:o.

In what way do you find it much more formal? I kind of get that feeling myself about the place too, I think it's because of the new building. It's nice but it's not as compact or relaxed (maybe?) than what we're used to. I'm not sure really.

In terms of the pool table, due to the fact that the Lounge is smaller than it used to be, we said we'd wait to see if students wanted the pool table back. We have absolutely no problem putting in the pool table but, believe it or not, you're one of the first students to say anything to us about the pool table.

The Lounge is there for the students to use it so the more interest from students, then we'll definitely put one in.

The fact that the SU is down at one end of the campus now means we're not seen as much around campus, as we're not in certain buildings as much as othter ones.

The fact that there is a completly different SU building has impacted on its interaction with students, so I presume that's why it seems more formal, but everybody is still more than welcome to drop in to the SU and say hello. Just because we're in a different location doesn't mean we're not as friendly.

Apologies for not saying hello as well.

But, as always, everyone is entitled to their opinion, sure isn't that what boards is all about?! So we take on board what you've said.

I think thats an unfair statement to make. The SU is absolutely focused on the students:

"Giving you a voice, helping you to use it. Enriching your college experience"

One quick look at the misu website or tvmisu will show the sheer volume of work done by the su for the student body this year.

Its easy to stand back and criticise; if people are unhappy with the work being done, come forward and offer suggestions of what you would like to see done. I'm pretty sure misuoffice would only be too happy to hear the suggestions being offered.

Personally I think that is harsh. I'm constantly amazed by the new initiatives they have come up with this year as I'm constantly telling them. Have a look at MISU facebook page as well as the constant updating of misu.ie
Remember that only the Pres. and Vice Pres. are paid full time officers. All other members of the exec do their work in an unpaid voluntary capacity.

In my opinion they are more accessible this year more than ever. They have even started having clinics like politicians. This reduces the perception that they are less approachable or you need an appointment to see them. They are even involved here giving students a voice in a safe and anonymous fashion if they want.

Haven't posted in a while, but I thought people should know about this page! Started by one of our classmates last week!

Parabola, can you fix that so it comes up in normal colours? I can't read it properly at all.

Okay, it's been 5 weeks since I last had contact about the idea, so it looks like we'll have to request a new forum the old-fashioned way.

I have started a new proposal thread in the Forum Requests Forum.

Please show your support for this proposal by posting "+1" and outlining your reasons why you think the forum is needed.

(Apologies for the double post, but this deserves a post of its own ;) )

Please sign this and show your support, the more the better.

    Also,

The lounge needs a pool table and if you could find that battered jukebox that was in the lounge circa 2001 it would be greatly appreciated.:D

I think he found them on one of the Mary I related Facebook pages.
He might make a better sig later though, probably without the random students in the middle! :D

Appreciate the reply, I know the lounge is smaller,(quite a minimal difference anyway) but if you take into account the area just outside by the SU (which many consider part of the lounge) it is bigger. The number of people who hang around college during free time is quite low as I said, stripping the lounge of everything bar tables and chairs would blatantly do nothing to help this. Would it not be more practical to have had a petition, like was easily done last week via class reps, to remove the music, pool table etc if the SU found them unnecessary? A friend did mention that he spoke with an SU member at the start of the year and was told that the pool tables would not be re-installed, I'm not 100% sure which member so I will clarify with him before I wrongly suggest anybody. The pool table is not even that big an issue, I'm just trying to portray how robotic the place seems to me and others I have spoken to, I do enough sports in my spare time so going to Taillteann to kick around isn't of real interest, apart from chatting, going to lectures and the canteen there isn't much else there. Is student-college interaction an issue for the SU that needs to be addressed or are you satisfied with it?

I'm sure there is alot of work being done behind the scenes for the students, but I think there should be a balance between socialising amongst the students and working for the students. There is only so much talking/computers/canteen that can be done, the whole place needs to be "jazzed" up a little to be perfectly honest. Different people appreciate different things, I'm sure many people love the couches and just sitting chatting but it would be naive to think that every student would be interested in this constantly. You cannot force people to stay in college but surely having as many resources as possible would aid this? College is laiden with diverse individuals, I feel that it is only fair that the resources around the college should reflect this to accustom as many student needs as possible.

I would appreciate it if somebody could link the current pres and vice presidents campaign video, it seems to have been removed and I would just like to take note of the supposed plans suggested then and how they stand now. Thanks
I think thats an unfair statement to make. The SU is absolutely focused on the students

I wouldn't consider it unfair considering it is not only my own view. Just because people do not complain does not mean they are not unhappy with the system in place.

EDIT * Just to clarify I am referring to the social aspect of college.

I wouldn't be interested in going into a meeting with somebody if they didn't feel comfortable saying hello walking down the corridor. That is no fault of the individual of course, just my view on things

The points you make re the pool table and things for people do between lectures is valid, and a good one.

I think you're making too much of this. The VP said hello to me today when I wasn't even looking in his direction and wasn't expecting it. I more or less grunted in return, as I was caught unawares, but that doesn't mean (I hope) that I'm uncomfortable saying hello to people.

Is there anything that you think the SU could do about improving the 'buzz' around the place between lectures?

PS: I invented my own 'support Mary I forum' signature:cool::)

EDIT: I don't know if they could do it, but it'd be great if the SU could up a notice on misu.ie about the forum campaign.

I'd hate to think that my every glance/non glance I make every day in my interactions with people would be analysed in the way you seem to have analysed this particular interaction.
Yet you seem to be doing this and clinging onto what I believe is a wrong perception of the individual concerned.

Your not supposed to be representing the whole student body so what you do is irrelevant to me.

It is actually yourself and your clique of online buddys that are clinging to this, the foundation of my post is in relation to the college resources available for students.

    LOL.

Lighthouse doesn't have a clique, Stuffy. We're just people who have made the effort to engage in a friendly way with members of the SU, instead of just running to them with demands.

How long have you been in the college, if you don't mind me asking?

If there is no clique then why do you feel the need to post for that person? Not once have I made any demand, I am trying to find out the SU reasoning behind certain motives, which only seems to be an issue with everyone else bar MISU so I think I will keep my conversation directed towards them. Thats irrelevant but long enough

This is a discussion forum. I don't need to be invited by you to respond to your posts. Simples :)

Also, you seem to be speaking for a number of people yourself. Who are the others that have spoken to you about being unhappy with the SU? Why haven't they tried to make their own voices heard here?

Final point, I thought "reasoning" and "motives" were pretty much the same thing. How does one explain a reason for a reason? Not sure how you'll get an answer to that one ;)

As stated, there is no pool table at the moment due to the space but that's not to say there won't be a pool table put in by any means. Also, there hasn't actually been that many students who have told us they want a pool table, but we do take your comments on board.

The Lounge and Central are still quite busy from day to day and the TV has yet to be connected in the Lounge but due to techinical difficulties (which are not on our side of things) there has been a setback.

The Tara building has only been in use for 4 weeks so obviously there are teething problems with certain aspects of the building, which can be expected with any new building after it has opened. In relation to the place being "jazzed up", both Tara and Tailteann are under the 'Per Cent for Art Scheme Open Competition' so we have to wait to see the outcome of that before we can proceed with further decoration of the Lounge, so hope that clears that up for you.
