I don't think it's all that outlandish to think Jack was aware that a particularly special bunch of minors were coming through and fancied taking them from 17 through to senior.

What's the problem with saying that? I don't think he'd even deny as much himself.

That's fair enough but the previous years minor time were also extremely talented and had a poor coaching/tactics and managed to get knocked out in an All Ireland quarter final. With a good manager (i.e Jack) then I feel that they could have won the AI.

As homerjay said- Kerry will always have at least a good team but it's a good coach that makes them winners.

I know you're not attacking JOC at all but some others on here are making extremely petty statements.

i fixed that for you. is shocking that a man who has won everything as a manager, is still doubted even after all these year and success.

as i already said, every kerry team has a chance of winning something, every year.

I'm not sure if you're implying that I am being bitter or the person you've quoted. If it's me that you're implying then you couldn't be more wrong. If it's him you're implying, well then fire away!

You said that Jack doesn't take over teams unless they have a chance of winning, which is patently nonsense.
Kerry Seniors were at a pretty low ebb after Páidí left in 2003 and were seen as well behind Armagh and Tyrone, tactically and physically. Jack took over for 2004 and we reached 6 finals in a row winning 4.
He also managed Coláiste na Sceilige to win 3 Munster colleges in a row when they formed and came over from Vocational schools.

Of course he recognised there was a decent group at minor level there last year, but to be honest I've seen more talented minor teams come and go without success, so people thinking he's glory-hunting or whatever are off the mark. Minor's are a very tough grade to work with.

Well I know Jack, he popped in and out of managing school teams depending who was on the panel. I was on one of the teams where we were fancied to go on another Hogan Cup run but fell short against Colaiste Chriost Ri. He wasn't there the year after when players left. Came back then 3 years later when a team was fancied to go on a cup run.
It's simply something I, and a good few lads I went to school with who would've been under Jack at Bally Foilmore and such have noticed.
I'm not questioning anything to do with his credibility or anything that ye are trying to make it look like, I like Jack and rate him highly as a manager seeing as I had him as one and from watching him as one for Kerry etc. I have an opinion, you may have another. But if I don't make remarks at you for your opinion then you can't do so for mine.

"Jack doesn't take over teams unless they have a chance of winning"..your words, not mine.
It is not an opinion, it is a proven fact, that those words are untrue. End of.

I don't know what has gone on in CNS every single year, but I do know Jack was in charge in 2001, 2002 and 2003 when 3 Corn ui Mhuiri's in a row were won.

Well tomas flaherta be in the reckoning as he left laois
I don't rate him at all but would love him in kerry as Cork would have huge chance then

    Here, slow yourself down man.
It is an opinion. Look up the word, familiarize yourself with it and then get back to me.

He was there in 01, 02, 03 and look at the panel of players they had. If I was over them I would've done the same at the ripe ol' age of 7.

Again. And I feel for some reason I have to re-iterate this, I have nothing against Jack, I like the man. Clearly not as much as you do but I do. Anyway, I've had my share of pointless debates for the day. If you want to carry on then fire away boss.

You said it man..not a hope. Don't rate him. I do think the trainer Jerome Stack is decent. Trained Kerry to win u21 in 2008. Good football man, but wouldn't have conditioning expertise that O'Neill has for example.

Ideally Donie Buckley would be involved down the line, but there's personal and political issues that may stop that. Jack will take over Seniors in 5 years or so all going well I'd say, who knows after that.

What's the story with PMs TTM, not doing them or what?

Jack outstanding manager and I agree he's not cherry picking sake it taking over under twenty one as he had them minor

I said many times he'd be the next manager
He's not imo fella I particularly like but that never matters me in he's coaching all I'm interested in as he's terrific coach and he's a winner

No I don't them anymore pm

Jack's not everyone's cup of tea as he can be a bit cranky and the circumstances of him getting the minor job ahead of Mickey Ned mean that a few noses were/are probably a bit out of joint.

However it's worth remembering that it's not that long ago that getting a manager for the Kerry U21 job was pretty much a case of it simply being whoever was willing to take on the job. Now we're in a position where you have someone who's massively experienced, who has won multiple senior All-Ireland and a minor All-Ireland with this bunch of players.

Now appointing Jack isn't going to guarantee success but it is an extremely strong appointment. If Kerry don't win an U21 with Jack in charge it's likely he'll ship a world of criticism. If all he cared about was his record as a manager, he could easily walk away when his stint with the minors was up at the end of the summer.

As an aside I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Jack is the most successful U21 county manager ever appointed in terms of titles won.

    Get up the yard.

There's as much chance as one of the posters here being in the reckoning as Tomas O'Flaharta

Nonsense, as someone who has played with Jack, under him as manager and against him as manager I can tell you he is known to manage when it suits himself. That doesnt mean its a bad thing, he is an excellent manager and motivator and knows his stuff, but its generally accepted down here or for anyone who knows him that if he decides to go back into management then its purely because he believes he is capable of winning something.
As 9bred4 said (correctly), anytime there was a poor CNS team over the last 15 or so years then he never got involved. Anyone who went to school there in that time would tell you the same.

Ye're a quare breed down there.

At the risk of repeating myself, I don't know what has gone on in CNS. Jack was manager some years, not manager other years. (Although funnily enough 4 (if I'm recalling correctly) Corn ui Mhuiris were won when he WAS manager? It doesn't really matter.
We're talking about Kerry here, not schools football...and one of the most pivotal moments in recent history in modern Kerry football was O'Connnor's appointment in late 2003. Maybe some of you are too young to remember or whatever, but Kerry were at a seriously low ebb. Morale was poor, Páidís sacking had left a bad taste in some mouths, there were rumours of the O'Sé brothers not playing for a year or more in protest etc.
We had been well beaten by Tyrone in 2003, were well behind Armagh and Tyrone in the physicality stakes and there was talk of rebuilding and changing Kerry's style of play etc. O'Connor could have tried to play it cute and let someone else come in to do the hard labour of rebuilding, possibly fail and then open the door for him. He didn't. He took the job, rebuilt the team, training methods, personnel, attitude..everything.
Paul Galvin, Aidan O'Mahony, Marc O'Sé, Diarmuid Murphy, Tom O'Sullivan, Declan O'Sullivan all established themselves (or re-stablished in Marc and Tom's case) as central players from 2004 on.
Ruthless calls (that had not been Páidí's forté) were made when and where necessary and the standard that pretty much remains today was set from that point on.

Shouldn't really have to emphasise the point, but the man has done a massive amount of good for Kerry football. He made some glaring errors in the 2010-12 period especially and he is far from perfect but this notion that he is this ego-maniac who only gets involved when there's guaranteed silverware has to be put to bed. Taking the Senior job in 2003 and minor job last year disproves this theory surely.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,422 ✭✭✭wonga77

Fair enough thats your view. I cant be bothered arguing but I will say this. Taking the kerry job in 2004 was his first major role, the rest is history which established him as one of the top managers in the country. He was well established on the club and school scene long before that and could have had any job he wanted locally. You dismiss my point about the CNS teams of the last 15 or so years, thats ok, just ask anyone who went to CNS or played football in that time and they will tell you the exact same as I have.
The minor job last year doesnt really disprove any theory, in fact id say the opposite, he came kind of out of nowhere to manage the minors. They were a seriously strong outfit backboned by a hugely succesful and talented bunch of lads from West Kerry so it wasnt like they were no hopers. I know plenty of people who had backed us to win the minor All Ireland when Jack was appointed (not me unfortunately) simply on the basis that if he was in with them then he must have a really good panel to work with. As I said before, its common knowledge to anyone from South Kerry. I dont want it to come across as anything personal, as I said I have known Jack for Donkeys years and grew up watching him play and then played alongside him. He has done massive work for school club and county and will go down as one of the best managers we ever had

As a first timer to a football munster final and before I buy tickets, where's the best place to go in fitzgerald stadium? Was just on tickets,ie and its showing red/green or blue areas but it looks like it may only be terrace tickets left

What are peoples' thoughts on Sheehan vs Moran assuming both fully fit and playing at their max (this year's max, if Sheehan is worse now than 2011 then forget 2011)?

Are they hard to separate or is one ahead of the other?

Hard to see that Maher's place could be in jeopardy, seems to be him plus one of the two others.

surely moran gets the nod? could play sheehan as a 3rd midfielder from 12/15 meaning Buckely loses out to that role?

People don't seem to think Sheehan has the physical attributes to play instead of Buckley so I was trying to keep it to a question purely about which of the two you would pick to play in midfield beside Maher.

There are a load of other permutations that there's definitely merit to discussing, but you could spend all day talking about 10 & 12 alone.

I would have had David as a complete gimme selection but Sheehan was really, really good against Tipp and his free-taking is miles ahead of anyone else we had, which makes it a bit closer.

That said, David's performance against Mayo in the replay last year might be the best performance I've ever seen so how do you even begin to countenance not playing him!

Maher and Moran midfield and then one of either Buckley or Sheehan as half-forward/third midfielder.

covered stand gets distributed by the County boards and its terracing behind one goal and down the side opposite the stand. not sure if its still the case but there used to be those concrete benches behind the other goal.

No idea where he was. He has never really killed himself when it comes to Feale Rangers..or Duagh for that matter. That being said he was doing a PhD in UL in recent years and now lives and works in Cork, so it's not as easy for him.

Yerra, this game is being played at walking pace, so not much of a test for Dublin.
That being said, they are moving well and anyone will find it hard to contain that forward line.

do you think dublin get worried when they hear of similar score lies down in munster when kerry and cork hammer the rest of us ? dont be fooled by the lenister championship the standerd is very poor up there at the moment , kerry do have the advantage of playing better opposition in tipperary and cork before the 1/4 finals wheres dublin's next big game wont be until august , the likes of kerry will be far better prepared

When you compare the battles that Donegal have to get to Croke Park to the rest of the provinces, they will be well battle hardened, one things for sure I cant see McCaffrey sauntering 50 or 60 yards as easy as today if they were to meet Donegal.
Are the Dubs getting better or the opposition getting worse or is it a mixture of both?

Quick question for anyone knowledgeable on Fitzgerald Stadium. Purchased Season tickets this year so we're heading to the stand on Sunday as opposed to the terrace. Tickets are Section A, Row 1 low 800's. I know section A is in the corner at the town end, I presume row 1 is down by the fence?
