i just pre booked mine in xtravision thisevening.
25euro deposit is all they needed and it is the sony bdps350 one printed
    on the receipt.

So is it 100% certain to be the 350?

Well, I cannot say for definite what the offers are in all of the Xtravision stores, but I had a good chat with the manager the other night when I put my deposit down on the player.

The model (in my store anyway) is deffo the BDP-S350 (says so on my deposit receipt as well). Not sure where the date of the 28th came out (think this is the Hancock release date, which is one of the discs in the offer) - but the player is not available for pickup until the 1st (when stock is arriving in that store).

He also confirmed this on the computer while I was at the counter, and I saw it also on the screen.

He has most of his allocated stock already sold (on deposit) - so my advice is, that if you want one of these asap - get in now.

This is turning out to be a bit of a joke, I was told Friday. The date is on in store promotional material and even in their Christmas gift guide.

But I'd take that with a pinch of salt. In another store when I was checking what model it was I was told "It's a Sony", I know I replied, but what model, "Sony, they're the only ones that make Blu-Ray". Needless to say I left it at that despite him asking me if I wanted to put a deposit down.

I've a a 32 inch tv which can go to 1080i. Will this player make a difference or should stick to the player in my Xbox? I've read Blu-ray is wasted on 32 inch tvs.

Equally, in my local store it all says the 1st.... could be just a case of when the delivery is going to come into different stores....I'm down the country a bit! ;)

It all depends on how far you sit from your TV and what your TV is. I have my HD-DVD player and HTPC hooked up to my Sony KDL-32W4000 and believe me when I say, I can notice the difference between DVD, 720p and 1080p quality from 10ft away.

The closer you are to your TV though, the easier it is to spot the difference between different content, so the further away, the harder it is to spot the difference. Also, the smaller the TV, the smaller the difference between the quality of DVD, Blu-ray etc and the bigger the TV, the bigger the difference between DVD, Blu-ray etc.

So is there any point in getting the 350 if you don't have a full HD 1080P LCD tv? Mine is only HD ready 1080i and I can't really tell the difference between 720p and 1080i on my tv.

    Thanks

I don't know exactly what TV you have, however, if you can notice a considerable difference between DVD and 720p/1080i content, then I would say get the Sony S350. If you can't, then you may be better off either not buying the S350, or buying a new TV as well as the S350.

The LCD I have is the Samsung LE40A455C 40. I can't really notice any difference between DVD 720p/1080i and I'm sitting about 6-8ft away from the tv.

    Probably not worth getting then?

Samsung BD-1500P is a much better machine lads.

Just so we're completely clear here, the 720p/1080i content we're discussing, what is the source? Are you connecting a PC to your TV and playing 720p/1080i files from it, or do you have Sky HD?

Watching Dvds via hdmi cable from dvd player to Tv. Don't have Sky HD, just have NTL Digital. I'm just referring to the 1080i quality when I'm watching dvds, can't really tell much difference from 720p/1080i.

Having gone from a 32 inch HD ready tv to a 40 inch 1080p tv watch HD-DVD's and Blu-Ray's(350) there is a big difference in quality.

HD ready looks great. HD 1080p looks better

You're not actually looking at anything from a HD source so you won't be able to see anything different. What you're looking at in 1080i is more than likely upscaled from something like 576i/p or something similar.
You will notice a difference when using a HD source.

The reason I said the 28th is because the Christmas magazine said the 28th. By the sounds of things different stores are getting them in on different days.

Thanks but will I still be able to see a marked difference with my HD ready 1080i tv? Is it worth splashing out on a Blu Ray player when I don't have a full HD 1080p tv?

It will look better than an upscaled DVD and will look even better on a 1080p tv. I've noticed the difference between 720p to 1080p

After reading your latest posts, I would recommend getting the S350 as you haven't even seen HD in all its glory yet. Once you watch a movie like Cars, I, Robot or Transformers, you'll never look back. ;)

Now that the player is nearly in our hands, what about the discs? Anybody recommend good places to buy movies. I have'nt checked the shops yet but i presume they are, as usual, overpriced. Sendit.com are doing some good deals at the mo, some discs under 10 sterling & a good selection in the 2 for 24 range. Also let you buy in sterling unlike those rip off artists play.com. Happy hunting!!

Mad Men Season 1 Blu-ray is €19 (inc p&p) at Amazon.com (here). I have never seen it, but it gets great reviews and for a 3 disk blu-ray it's a good price (cheaper than the DVD version!).

Amazon also have The Rambo Trilogy for €19 (here) and Transformers for €13 (here). Each price includes p&p. You could save a bit extra on postage by ordering together.

    All are Region free.

Loads more at Amazon for $9 (you'll need to do some searching in here).

Zavvi are also doing a fairly good 3 for 2 offer in the shops. Have some decent films for €25 each, so could get 3 for €50.

I'm guessing Amazon are the best too, I was looking at the co.uk site during the week and they have a large collection compared to play.com but both are doing 3 for 2 offers. I haven't checked in store anywhere yet.

Just picked up the player and am well chuffed. How do you claim Batman Begins and Casino Royale. They didnt have a clue in my xtravision.

There should be a registration CD in the box, pop that in, fill in a survey and wait.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 103 ✭✭wiseolsham

Yup, thats the one alright. 28 days to wait :(

So can we 100% confirm its the 350 model. I was in Xtravision today and the shop was full of posters advertising the deal but the picture was the 300 model.
