Well, it's now been a week since I changed my modem WAG160N and things are 90% better than they were with my old modem.
    See here.

And here are my new results at a time when my old router would be struggling for connection...

    Hi,

I've recently requested an upgrade to a 7.6mb dsl service (I won't mention the provider...yet), with the upload 672kbs.

I checked the connection configuration on my router and it's only reading 4416/672, with the upload being correct, but the download reading over 3mb lower than it should be.

Have they tried to do me thinking I wouldn't notice the difference?

It could very well be that your line is not capable of anything faster. Not all lines are capable of higher speeds, a lot can depend on the quality of your line and how old it is ect. Can't see how the provider would benifit by reducing your speed when you are a paying customer.

All this shows is the most important thing with these tests is the latency. Maidenhead is only 25ms away from my office connection, as result I get highest speed, whereas Dublin testing site has highest latency and lowest result. Awh well.

Heck even got lower latency going to Amsterdam, awh well how am I not surprised that network infrastructure in Ireland is ****e.

    Thanks.

Whilst on the 3mb service I was getting the full whack (3072/384), so I might go back to that considering my download speed increase isn't much of an improvement, plus I wouldn't use 20g a month, let alone 40g.

Would upgrading my router to a Linksys improve things at all?

I'm currently using an old Eircom Netopia. It Was sitting around for about 7 years doing nothing so I hooked it up recently as the Zyxel one I got from Digiweb was starting to play up.

    Hi,
I just hooked up my new Broadband modem a couple of days ago.

    360822120.png

I think I should be getting faster upload and download speeds than this.
Is it possible my line is not good enough to carry 7.6 meg?

Maybe I should downgrade to 3Mbps.

    Any suggestions?

All of the above were taken on my laptop using a wifi connection at least 20 metres away from the Router so there is signal degradation and slight ping loss. Still I'm happy but ideally need 50meg down and 10meg up.

50MBdown? 10MB up? Eh, I think you mean 15MB down and 1MB up?

No I am happy with what I currently have but would love to have 50megabits down slightly above 5MB (megabytes) and 10mb (megabits) down which is is around 1.25MB (megabytes)

As can be seen from the speed test, 11Kb/s Download, 38Kb/s Upload isn't good:confused:. Anyone know if a High gain Antenna would improve matters

HAVE TO ASK guys why is this speedtest.net relied on instead of the Blackknight "irish ISP test" that links to this very forum? is it because thats wildly inaccurate or what?!

You can post results from the blacknight speedtest here, too. It's not a requirement to use speedtest.net

The reason, why most people use speedtest.net is first of all, the nice and easy url for forum posts and a simple common denominator.

If you want to compare your results with somebody else, you will need to measure your speed in the same manner to get a somewhat accurate idea. speedtest.net is just easier for that task, not a requirement.

    /Martin
