    Oh, there's also this one:

    http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Acer_Aspire_5750G_1086985.html

Which seems great except for the CPU....I know the CPU isn't too important, but is that enough?

Also trying to decide between paying via my debit card directly or through paypal....costs a bit more, but seems....safer? I'm just used to it :/

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,093 ✭✭✭Occono

And it turns out I can't use Paypal because I can't get a "confirmed address", and I now have to wait until the refund shows up in my account before I can order it again >_>

    Which lappy did you pick?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,093 ✭✭✭Occono

The 5750G. Cheaper and better specs apart from the processor.

So I got the money back, annnd it's rejecting my Debit Card: It's telling me to select "Credit card" instead. It's definitely a Debit Card. :/

    did you get sorted it?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,093 ✭✭✭Occono

I don't think I'll get a response until Monday or Tuesday.

There's a surcharge if I pick Credit Card, so not doing it. Considering I've never bought anything this expensive online before, not a great first experience >_> Though at least the money came back, could take a month apparently.....

The only laptops in Argos or PC World with a 540m are at least €850 >_> So.....I'm still sticking with this...

Has anyone bought stuff of them recently??

I bought a tablet there yesterday morning and it said it was in stock and I checked my order status today and it says that they are waiting for stock to arrive to complete me order. But in the online shop it says they have them in stock now and earliest date for delivery would be tomorrow (obviously that would be to mainland uk). Have e-messaged them and haven't heard back

Pixmania.ie have the same one and with 1-3 day delivery for a few euro more

    are laptopsdirect really that bad?

I bought a laptop off them in 2008 and never had a problem with it
returned it under warranty in 2010 and they fixed it and had it back to me within 20 days

Was thinking of buying a new core i5 laptop off them again
But after reading all the bad reports here i'm reconsidering

With Amazon you can't go wrong, if something goes wrong they usually offer refund/replacement without any problems.

graphics card not the same, smaller hard drive

Agreed about the hard drive however 2GB is pretty much useless on the card and mostly there as a marketing check box.

If gaming is name of the game why not to go for this model

explain why the 2GB graphics is useless?
    genuinely interested.

Having 2gb is only useful when running multiple monitors or at super-high resolutions like 2560x1600. That much RAM is utterly worthless on laptops with a 1600x900 or lower resolution screen. Even at 1920x1080 resolution, a 1gb card is fine. It's the graphics card model that matters, not the amount of video RAM.
You not planning to run multiple monitors by any chance?

    not currently...

I just want to get a nicely speced laptop. Bit of gaming, and running general applications.
Bought a very decent one 4 years ago and it never let me down.

    I appreciate the feedback

    don't know much about lenovo

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,692 ✭✭✭Jarren

    Depending purely on a model

I've seen T series in action

    Something like this :

    http://www.laptopmag.com/review/laptops/lenovo-thinkpad-t420.aspx

    http://www.digitaltrends.com/laptop-reviews/lenovo-thinkpad-t420s-review/

    currently available from Lenovo Outlet

    http://outlet.ie.lenovo.com/store/lenovooe/en_IE/list/parentCategoryID.56794200/categoryID.56797800

    It's really solid built,spill-resistant keyboard,very long battery life .

    Grab aditiional ram from http://www.crucial.com/uk/
    SSD from http://www.ebuyer.com/340142-ocz-256gb-petrol-ssd-ptl1-25sat3-256g

and you are ready to roll

I couldn't comment on the Lenovo from komplett, never saw those models before,
have a look at Amazon buyers reviews

Never ever make the mistake of buying from them or recommending them.Once they get your money, you are on your own if you have any issues..Their prices are not competitive as they TRY to advertise..

I bought from Laptopsdirect recently and I got the my purchase after 8 days. I think this is pretty good considering it was coming from the UK and the price was exceptional, similar spec laptops were all €100-€300 more expensive (even the online shops)

I know people who bought from them and got their goods after a couple of days. It even say on their website that delivery to Ireland can take 2 weeks.

Anyway a few days before the laptop was delivered I got a little worried and came across this thread which made me more worried so I emailed the laptopsdirect support team who got back to me a few hours later which isn't bad I think for a support team and they told me they were awaiting stock for my order and it would be dispatched as soon as they got the goods.

I would definitely recommend these guys, their prices are better than everywhere else and the same level of service really.

    Hi all,

I am looking to buy a laptop with an dedicated graphics card (the minimum/important specs I'm looking for are, an i3 generation 3 and a 1gb dedicated graphics card). I could spend up to €600 but would prefer to spend under €500. I have not had any luck in any physical stores around the place. Anyway, bam! laptopsdirect popped up with some good prices, and I was all set to order from them until I discovered this thread and a few others (others in reference to laptopsdirect.co.uk), and now I am obviously having second thoughts. I was also looking at a refurbished model they are selling and was wondering if anyone here has anything positive to say about their refurbished machines. Any help/advice/dire warnings/encouragement would be greatly appreciated...

Here's the refurb machine: It's an i5 with 8gigs of ram and the dedicated graphics card I'm after http://www.laptopsdirect.ie/Refurbished_GRADE_A2_-_Minor_Cosmetic_Damage_-_Acer_Aspire_V5-571G_Windows__77084044-2-NX.M3NEK.003/version.asp

Here's a new machine from laptops direct for a similar price as the refurb: It's an i3, 6 gb ram and same graphics card http://www.laptopsdirect.ie/Acer_Aspire_V3-571G_Windows_8_Core_i3_Laptop_-_Black_NX.RZJEK.012/version.asp

The next best price I can find for what I'm looking for is on the Dell website: A 17" i3 4gb ram with nvidia dedicated graphics card http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=n0017r45&model_id=inspiron-17r-5720&c=ie&l=en&s=dhs&cs=iedhs1

I have checked everywhere I can think to look, komplett, dabs, amazon, ebay, laptopsdirect, harveynorman, pcworld, pixmania -- and I cannot seem to find a better deal. I have found it difficult to trawl through sites if the laptops that are stocked are not searchable by graphics card type.

At the moment I am leaning away from laptopsdirect I must admit... Any help/advice/recommendations much much much appreciated. This laptop will have to last me 3 years at least, and I can't afford to be messed about by a vendor if any technical issues arise with it after purchase.

    Cheers!
