That's hardly how it's pronounced in France, is it?

Speaking of car names. How is Hyundai pronounced? UK ads pronounce it as Hi-unn-dye, US as Hun-dee, and I've heard people pronounce it as Hyun(Rhymes with Fionn)-Dye.

EDIT: Apparently it is Purrzho. Here's a french guy saying it: http://antp.be/temp/priv/peugeot.wav

    :P :pac:

    zero natural illumination
Is that like saying "its dark"?

    No.

"Zero natural illumination" means exactly what it says, it does not mean that there is no illumination at all, even if it is totally dark to the naked eye. That the unaided human eye does not see some wavelengths does not mean it is dark, any more than the fact that we can't hear dog whistles because of their high frequency means that they are quiet.

We have IR illumination flares available to be fired by mortars, artillery, or dropped from aircraft. They provide artificial illumination, but it is invisible to the naked eye, thus it appears to be dark, but it is not. If one happens to be wearing a set of NVGs or looking through a similar Army-issue night vision device, the whole area is lit up as bright as day, so there is plenty of artificial illumination. This provides a huge benefit to the more technologically equipped side (i.e. the US) because we have ample night vision, and the opposition tends not to. In such circumstances the distinctions between "zero illumination", "zero natural illumination" and "natural illumination present" become relevant.
and its not my first ride on an Amtrak: thats actually the fastest travel time I've had with them.

You should know better than to take Amtrak if you're on a schedule. It's like looking at a Dublin Bus schedule at a stop and expecting the bus to show up when it says. Of course, DB comes more frequently than once a day. That said, the NorthEast Corridor and the San Joaquin corridor are pretty reliable.
Thread title is bogus, not just because teh suffix -izm doesn't exist anywhere but also because

Bugger. This places me in somewhat of a quandary. I'm something of a stickler for correctness, but this is contrary to all I know and love. It's going to take me a while to adjust.

    NTM

I think there could be a distinction between the two due to the format difference between UK and US shows.

A UK program would often have 6 episodes per year. (Extras, Blackadder, Red Dwarf and so on.)

A US program would run for much longer, usually having 22 episodes, or sometimes more, per year. (The X Files, Stargate, CSI and so on.)

    Worth considering.

As an american, i am thrilled to bits.

When I got here as a young child in the 80's, I was mercilessly teased and pestered by everyone (including adults) about saying sidewalk, truck, guys, rubber, pronoucing route as "rout" etc. it was really quite cruel.

    IN YO FACE!

Shame that though. The Office, IT Crowd, Extras? They all deserved many more episodes than they got to work with.

22 episodes of The Mighty Boosh per series would be too much awesome for the world to handle.

A bun is usually a form of sweet bread. A cupcake is a fairy cake (but maybe you canned them buns) ?

"Season" being one - in reference to a television "series"

A season is a one-year run of a series. For instance Lost is a series, or a serial if you like, and it's heading into season 5. Unfortunately soap operas on this side of the globe never end, they don't even take Christmas day off, but you could classify The Panel a serial with each year a season.

Anyway, Americanizms (love that sly "z" by the way)

OR NO - "Are you guys goin' to the ballgame or no?"
Paddy might say: "Are yis goin' to the metch or aren't yis?"

NAAAT SO MUCH - Can be used to express displeasure or disgust with something.
"Europe's awesome... Africa, naaat so much"

ANAL - Highly aggravated or up-tight
"No need to go anal on me, you guys..."
Paddy might say: "Cool down, leds, cool down!"
