hey just have another question about public jobs (sorry!) :o i had registered for an alert ages ago, but then i was unsure that i had done it right, so I tried it a second time, just to be sure...long story short, i have two alerts set up. Does anyone know am I counteracting the alert by having 2?...Should I delete one? I know its prob all nothing, but just in case anything goes wrong..!!! :P thanks in advance

They said it might only affect you if you use 2 different email addresses. If you keep an eye on here anyway you won't miss it!;)

Anyone went and done the ECDL course yet???Ive been working with computers for years but i dont have an ECDL cert... Does it take long to get one?? Much training involved??? All these would surely have to be taken into condideration for requirements.

Just to let people know.....Microsoft Word, Exel and PowerPoint are what the job are looking for internally. When we apply for certain positions these are listed as desired qualifications. Microsoft Office specialist is the top one with all included I thinks.

But as said over and over this are recommendations.....doesnt mean you shouldnt have them though!!!

they cant just put in the recommendations this time round they would have to give people notice in order to get them. an annoncement would have been made in the media that they were requirements now surely?

They can pretty much do what they like.
I think this might be the delay in advertising, at the moment they're advertising to advertise to keep people happy and make it look like things are moving while they try to decide what requirements they'll inforce.

Hi there,Devil 8,i rang HR last Friday, and asked where exactly was i standin, and they couldn't tell me..they said Garda Commissioner announced on the radio 2wks ago that they'll take on new recruits by the end of the year but how many, and when..nobody knows yet..
But if you're goin to Publicjobs.ie,you'll see that they'll start a new recruitment Campaign in a few wks for the gards, and when i've asked HR what's the story with that, how come they're starting a new campaign, when there's so many of us waiting since 2008????ridiculous!!HR said they don't know who'll be takin and when...it's been 2and a half years since i've aplied for the position, and i'm still waitin for my medical and PCT..knowing that all that had to do with documentation it's alll stamped and done!!!!how much longer do we have to wait????

Hi iony, I know the lack of info is very annoying but try not to get too worked up about it. it wont do you any good. so far I find the best place for info is this site. i was talking to a friend of mine who is a guard, he was saying that if they take in a large group then there will be nobody left on the panel, and that they always need people on the panel ready to go, that's why they have launched a new campaign. the people who apply now wont be waiting as long as us but it could be well into next year when they get in.

hi "thelongwait",you're rite, but what about us???new people on the panel, nothin wrong with that..but i was told by HR that they don't know who's gonne go first,us waitin for so long or new campain guys,or maybe mixed..i'm sure there's a good few people waitin since 2008..
it's just not fair on us as we can't make any plans for the future at all..it would be nice if they could let us know one way or the other, than keeping us waitin...:Di got your point anyway, thanks:D
what about yourself?are you in the same situation?

I applied first in 2007. my background check got a bit delayed. i did med and fitness near the end of last year. been waiting since. a friend of mine did his interview about 4 weeks after me and is still waiting for his med and fitness test.

I completely get where your coming from, our life is on hold while we wait for some politicians to make there mind up and when we ask for info nobody seems to know anything. doesnt seem fair, does it.

If it's just a caution it probably won't affect your chances really. From what I understand when the background checks are being done by your local station it will probably show up. Just be upfront about it if it's asked on the background forms.

I think if its a one off and its not characteristic of your normal behaviour they will overlook it. There may be someone else who posts here that has been through the process having had such a caution and hopefully they can give you a more definite answer.

yes @thelongwait@,it was last year around September when i got the phonecall to meet up with the local superintendent, and he sid to me that as far as he's concerned,i'm good to go,and that he'll sign my docs straight away and send them to Dublin the next day..he told me that the docs came from Dublin with a note(ASAP)..don't know what to believe anymore..

It will not effect you if your honest about it. i think its form b that its asked. i was arrested a few years ago for acting like a clown on a drunken night out when i was 18 or 19. i left it off the form and it caused all sorts of problems. i almost had my application thrown out but i still got through and did my med and fitness at end of last year. i'd have got in in nov 08 if i'd put it down first time. the informal interview wit your local super is your chance to explain that its out of character and all that. when he signs the form that means hes accepted it and is recommending you for service.

while i was at the fitness test i was talkin to another guy who had been arrested twice and got through.

as far as i know being arrested for something or being cautioned gives you a record but unless your convicted by a court for an offence then its not a criminal record

hi guys ... just wounder what would be better to take the Home Study’ Preparation Course or the 1-Day’ Preparation Course .. dont know which one to do may even do both if its worth it, any ideas

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,128 ✭✭✭Geri Boyle

Its a personal choice thing. I did a one day course which was brilliant. If you feel you would get more out of a home study course then you should go that route. I didn't do one of those so I can't comment on how good they are.

I did both. the 1day course was great because they explain everything to you and you can ask questions if something isnt clear.

The home study was great for revising what you did on the 1day course and for refreshing your memory before the exam.

i came 4th in my batch so it paid off. how you do in the aptitude test determines how quickly you get called for interview so its important to do well.

Its my understanding that they'll take those of us already waiting first. They need new applicants too though because they simply dont know how many of us "in the system" will be available to take a position if offered to us. Things change alot for some people in the space of 2 years. Some may have got jobs they dont want to leave, or emigrated etc and wont be available if called. I myself (may 08, batch 2) have a baby on the way and a mortgage to think about, i'll definately take a place if offered one, but not everyone might. Understandably they need to cover themselves by having more applicants than they need.

Google is your friend. Or pm someone on here who has been through the process. Most posters on here have gotten a lot of help from people on this site, and are more than willing to pass on hints and tips... ;)

I agree with madbadger. if the minister says he wants 250 trainees taken in they cant just tell him that theres only 150 available and he'll have to wait. they need to be prepared.

Don't worry, you'll get there eventually.
