They do in my school because I remember last year a girl did it with the science teacher in my school.. I'd hate to do that in maths though.. :/
    :)
There isn't much you can do Maths related though..universities maybe? but I wouldn't get my hopes up. Would you be interested in programming or something?

Have you tried a local computer repair shop? It may sound boring but a week with an IT specialist will be good plus you'll more than likely have to help fix computers and learn different parts, which would be interesting. It would also be good to see how a business would work if you look at it like that. I went into mine today and he said he would happily have me for it.

Is there a IT near you or an Industrial Park? You could always ask in there too. Even ask you computer/IT teacher, he/she may be able to get contacts.

    Hope this helps, somehow.

Yup computer repair shops would be the way to go, I wouldn't go to a computer store though, they're just a business.

If you want you can try places like Microsoft and Google. I did Microsoft work exp last year and it was great, not really anything programming but it was still a great week. You have to know someone to get in Google or something

Hey I was wondering if anyone has ever been to a newspaper office (specifically the Examiner in Cork but wherever will be fine) and could tell me what it's like?

I still haven't organised anything, lol. I have a month! I wanted to do make-up but the ones I tried were full so I might try a hair salon and a vet... anyone know any interesting places in Dublin that aren't full yet?

Vet places get taken real quick, my friend tried and ended up working in a petshop...which was apparently great

Hi :) Does anyone know of anywhere I could check that has something to do with Chemistry?? I've been thinking and I'm honestly stumped for ideas ><

I wouldn't mind doing something with English either but the newspapers/magazines I've emailed have all said no though so idk where else to check... ah fml. I've emailed at least 10/12 different places now and they're all either fully booked or don't accept under 18s! Bad luck!!

Maybe you could get experience in a lab in a hospital or in a university lab? They're probably booked up.

I wanted to get experience in a magazine I liked a while ago, turns out they'd shut down :( ah well it was a niche anyways.

I have nothing lined up for next weeks experience day, everyone's just like "oh one day a week for five weeks that's just not really possible." :///////////

God I'd love that. Where did you go and what job did you get? :)
I'm going to a primary school in December but I don't think I can get a job out of that :p

Everyone has theirs so early, mine isn't until January and February, even the other schools in my town have it now. Guess it's so there are places left for everyone.
Anyway, where did you or where are you all going? I'm going to a computer repair shop then a local indie game design company for the other. Their office is tiny but it would be cool to see people programming and see what it's like as an actual job.

I'm in third year but i'll like to have a rough idea where ima get work experince next year. Do Google, ebay or Yahoo offer work experince places in Dublin City Centre? I want to do something that involves computers ... and creativity and of course fun ;).

Don't know about banks but Credit Unions accept students for work experience.

thel0gic, there's only a couple of them anyway. Try them all, the Times do iirc but ring up all the newspapers based in Dublin. People kill for placements in newspapers so I'd apply early if I were you.

Looking for placements is really stressing me out :( To be honest, I want to be an author, but since you can't really do experience in that I'm applying at The Irish Times (because at least it's writing) and Trinity Biochemistry.

I know someone in the Irish Times and they've emailed me giving me a title for an article that I have to write and sent back to them in about ten days. My Science teacher said she'll send in an application for me to TCD in September.

I have tons of qualifications in the writing area and some in science (I did a CTYI course in Journalism this summer and loads of [successful] writing competitions, plus Scifest and then planned Young Scientist during TY).

The problem is, neither The Irish Times nor TCD Bio do two-week placements. For my work experience the school's ordered us to get one week in November in one field and then two weeks in February-March in a completely different field. The dates the Irish Times is offering don't match with my school but I really want to work there, and TCD is a week too short. What to do?

I'm in the same position in terms of the dates screwed up. I have a week settled with a private psychological therapist but the week isn't in my school's work experince dates. Really stuck here too.

When I was in TY, I got two placements where I couldn't chose the dates. Luckily one was during one of my work experience weeks and the other was during the mid term and I did it.

Even if they were during a school week, I would have still done it. I loved those two places(One was in aviation/military and the other one in IT). I wasn't going to sit in class if I had a great placement lined up for the week  They teach so little in TY I wouldn't have missed anything anyway.

I'd talk to your teacher or principal about it, they shouldn't have a problem with it.

Don't worry, i'm sure 90% of all TY students haven't either :pac:.

When I did TY the work experience I had lined up in advanced fell through, I managed to get two fantastic places on very short notice.
There were also a few people from school who managed to get first class places that didn't coincide with the weeks set by school. In general the school were able to make allowances for such things. Perhaps the same could apply for some of you? Or would those of you in such a position consider taking a week off school? I know it doesn't sound ideal but it is just TY (and I don't mean that in a condescending way, more that it's a slightly less academic school that shouldn't be covering LC curriculum at this stage)
