I have applied for University Halls also, I'm a soon to be masters student, so it seems like the best out of all accommodation for an apartment that will be quiet, easy to study in and close to the University. Not sure on what the waiting list is like at the moment with University Halls, best bet is to email them. If you have received an email asking for a security deposit, it gives you 24 hours to place the deposit. Hope this helps :)

Yeah, I got an email and I already put down my deposit. Not sure what this means... do we have a spot 100% at this point? And I'm just thinking about how much time I'll be spending in my room since I plan to travel as much as I can around Ireland and Europe (hopefully). Not sure if it's worth paying so much for accommodation, but it would be nice to return somewhere nice, clean and freshman free :)

Anyone lived in Abbey Wharf that could give me feedback on it? :D

Is there any particularly "first year friendly" accommodations? I want to be somewhere where there is a good amount of socialising but isn't exactly rowdy :L

    Hi everyone,

I'm hoping to move down to Cork in the next three weeks as I will be starting my masters in UCC shortly, I have been looking online at accommodation but said I would post here too..

Basically i'm 22, easy- going and easy to get along with also like to keep the place tidy!
So if anyone is looking for a housemate please let me know! I would love a single en suite room but hey beggars cant be choosers- I know I have left it quite late!

    Thanks :)

Hi I have 2 girls starting college next month. We were looking at student accommodation today. Does anyone know anything about Farranlea or the Village student accommodation. They are expensive at over 4,000 for college year. So one would need to know that these places are what they advertise. Can anyone help with advice. Maybe someone who has stayed in any of these places. Thank you( worried, stressed mother)...

Apartments new ones and old ones ideal for master students near denneheys cross and victoria rd.

I suggest ye visit vic mills/farranlea halls decide then before paying. Location ideal to ucc and centra/tesco express. That what i did visited before going ahead with ones near tesco express.

Ok, so I'm new to boards and hopefully after my results/offer, I will be new to UCC :), and I am completely confused about accommodation, I have booked farranlea hall after visting student village, victoria lodge and brookfield (glad I avoided that one! ) and really liking the place, People have really mixed opinions about farranlea, and I just want to know about some other people's experiences. I am coming from Galway and I don't know anybody in cork apart from some relatives, and I really want to start college being able to meet fellow first years and not have to worry about bad management or broken heating as some people have mentioned, if anyone is willing to help, i'd really appreciate it, thanks :P

@AMCTPC I'm also going into first year this year. (Got it in round zero so its guaranteed) I have booked The Student Village. It costs 4,250 a year..so it's not cheap but it covers all bills, internet etc. I would recommend you take a look at it if at all possible. I would also recommend booking a place ASAP as it will all go nuts after the leaving cert results/CAO come out. :)

Just fyi waiting list at vic mills is over 100. Stayed at the spires myself before, pretty decent and v close to college- only negative was they kinda killed us on deposit- charged 160 euro for cleaning out the fridge :/ There were more on top of that too- brookfield charged a lot less in that area

As a parent I would recommend Castlewhite for 1st years. My son stayed there for his first 2 years. Year one was great, he shared a 3 bed flat with 2 other lads. No issues at all ( broken window lock was fixed within a day) The flats are fairly modern, well equipped and the location brilliant, bus stop right outside. Management are reasonable with parties, generally shutting them off at midnight. I found the flats a bit bland and the only downside he found was sharing the bathroom and keeping it clean.

Year 2 did not work out so well, mainly down to sharing a 4 bed top floor flat with 3 exchange students, 2 of whom were bullies. He ended up travelling home almost every weekend to avoid them. They regularly used up all the hot water, refused the my son and his other flat mate access to the bathroom ( saying they were cleaning it) threw away their food, retuned the communal TV to spanish channels etc. Management were sympathetic but ultimately it made his second year miserable. that said the flat was nicer, larger and quieter

He is booked in to Uni Hall, he has spent 2 nights there while doing a resit and loved it, big bedrooms, all rooms ensuite. Currently he is in Vic Lodge for 2 nights, not as nice, bit dated and his room does not have ensuite despite being advertised and booked as such.

While they are a bit pricier it does include internet and bills ( although we have lost around €200 from the deposit this year on electricity charges) plus you are not paying bus fares and there are no end of year rows over who pays what. Monthly flat inspections mean that the flats do have to be kept fairly clean and tidy.

Always found the UCC campus management very good to deal with Though they were a bit quick chasing the rent this year, we were hoping to hold off paying it in case he doesnt get the results he needs to move into third year and it's technically non refundable unless the room is relet, but they rang a day after the due date chasing payment ( despite me emailing them to see if we could delay the payment) you would have thought in his third year staying with the company they would give a bit of leeway.

Edit - I wouldnt be too worried about these places filling up quick. When my son was having problems with flatmates he asked about moving to either another flat or to Uni Hall and both options were available in December

I stayed there for an orientation and the shower was clogged and broken (I had to wash myself and my hair in the bedroom sink) also nearly every flat I've been to in Castlewhite has ripped up couches- my friends had to put a shaming sign in the window to force the management to replace them, they were like that when they moved in. :/
Also the fire alarms are notorious there, they have been set off by hairdryers and straighteners believe it or not and there is a charge when the fire brigade come out :/

Also Castlewhite is very, very prone to flooding, it was destroyed a few years back and another friend of mine nearly lost an expensive instrument to it :/
I found the flats very depressing inside also.

    Hey Guys!

Im a 1st year in UCC studying International Commerce and im just after putting down a deposit on The Village accommodation because everywhere else is booked out!!

Im just wondering is it a good place to stay? Is it spacious? Have people had good experiences there? Also, they say its an 8min walk to UCC.. Is that a power walk or a sprint? :p Plus how far away would it be from the business building?

Id appreciate any help to put my mind at ease!!:p

    Thanks :)

I lived there for two year. The first year was during the freak floods that will not happen for another 100 years. I was on the bottom floor and so the apartment was ruined. As a result we had to mover out to Dean's hall in Bishopstown. However the management were excellent during all of this which was a lot of upheaval for themselves too. Mid-way through the week off they had the alternative accommodation sorted out and it was only for 3 weeks which was very quick turnaround for fixing up the apartments in the run-up to Christmas with everything brand new.

In two years I never had a problem with the showers at all. As for the couches I'd imagine the majority of them are fixed up now. The fire alarms are the same as any student accommodation and are very sensitive in other places too.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time there but I guess I was lucky that the people I was living with became good friends and we stayed together in second year. It has the best location and double beds and while it may not look like the ritz inside it served it's purpose. I would highly recommend Castlewhite myself anyway.

I lived there in first year. It's ok, I found it very noisy during study month but it's comfortable and warm :)
It's actually a 10-15 minute regular walk to main campus- it's 8 mins to the Western Gateway Building XD

Several of the apartments had broken showers if I remember correctly at the time.
You seem to be one of the lucky ones in regards to everything else :/
It's known as Castle****e because of the problems I've heard down through the last two years I've been in UCC :/

Hey! I lived in Deanshall in first year and I absolutely loved it! I don't know the price ranges but it is over 4000. I lived with two other girls and it was perfect for me! But you can also live with four other people! And it's around ten minutes walk from college, five minutes from town! It's a great location :) All bills included, the usual! :)

I think it is, most the accommodation bar Brookfield as far as I know have some kind of restriction. The Village is the most restricted I think (it won't even let you look at websites with 'swimwear' )

There's a Tesco express around Dennehy's Cross :) It's 5 minutes or so from The Village and Vic Lodge.

Lidl is within a walking distance of about 20 minutes from there but the 214 will also bring you just down the road from it :) It's worth it if you want to save money trust me, plus the walk kept me fit and strong without killing me so I'd say they're probably the best.

Wilton has a big Tesco and that's close by also (the 208 will drop you outside it too). There's also a Tesco in Paul's Street in town.

There is an Aldi but it's fairly far away so I would stick to Lidl as it's much closer.

There's a Dunnes Stores in town on Patrick Street too, the grocery dept is downstairs :)

Don't worry if you're not from Cork, I'm not and still found my way around ok :)
