Is there any person you've played with live in the last few months that's really impressed you?
Have you witnessed a hand play out and think "wow he played that well"

Plenty of people have played well, but its hard to see someone play a few hands where usually you dont even see a showdown and think they were playing excellently! Off the top of my head Dathio and Ollyboy impressed me, but I didnt really see that much to be honest. Ollyboy seemed to make some nice moves at the GJP event and got andy black to get pretty annoyed with him. Im leaving out tonnes of players who have played well from what I saw.

When im at a table I tend to concentrate my attention on the bad players. I know far more about the chiefs games than dathios. I think this makes a lot of sense as im going to tend to avoid dathio, but certainly not the chief.

    Excellent Q & A Mr Jelly!

I must say that you really are putting in a serious effort to answer all individual questions - vwp sir

anyways i only have stupid questions so ignore if too busy (or scared :p ):

What ever happened our grudge match? (I was there...)

    Can we re-arrange it?

Who else would you like to invite?

Will you be gracious in defeat?

Also do you think it's -EV to give all the good advice that you post on boards?
...or do you have a few tricks hidden up your sleve??

    many thanks

    Bops!

Were you bluffing when you raised me in the last boards 200 game in the SE?

4 limpers including me in cut off, you on button and two others. Flop (600) A75r checked to me, I bet 400 and you made it 1100. I folded. It was quite obvious neither of us had an ace, unless of course you limped on the button with one. I had 56 and was close to pushing. Do you think a push would have been stupid against your range?

Well a push would be good in one respect, its going to look very strong. I actually had A8s (top 2 pair!) and probably wouldnt of folded no matter what you did, but I probably fold any 1 pair hands or bad flush draws, but when I raise i really dont have many 1 pair hands too often bar pair/flushdraw combos which I probably wont fold.

I thought at the time there was a good chance that my action didnt look as strong as it could of, but its not often im going to just start swinging at a pot you lead at when there is 5 people behind us all of whom could well have been slowplaying something. I remember being a bit worried that you had 555.

I think that was the only hand that went well for me that day!

I love having a lot of free time to explore other interests and/or sit around my house playing computer games. I love not having to waste time in an office or meetings and most of all I love that my success and income are based solely on how well I do and how much I work, and not trying to impress some dimwitted middle manager who has a terrible sex life and is into david grey.

There are some things about poker I dont like, it gets to me sometimes what a stupid industy it is, and how 99% of people in it have no clue what poker is actually about. I often read cardplayer or bluff magazine and wonder what fcuking planet these morons live on becuase its not earth.

Sorry I didnt get back to you. Gholimoli couldnt make it for that date, I think we should arrange it for sometime in the new year. I think we should get rooney dives to play as well as Pillow talk. That leaves one space open!

I play very rarely with players from here. 99% of the time I play on the internet against people who have never heard of Boards, so its not that much of an issue. I do think though that the edge I have when I play isnt just a question of knowledge, its not just because I happen to have read more 2+2 threads than other players. Poker is also about adapting and other skills like hand reading which arent easily learnt. If for some reason I was going to spend the rest of my life playing only against Irish players I might reconsider.

One thing that noone seems to consider though, is that giving stratey advice is actually very usefull as well as it forces you to consider situations logically. I got good at poker basically by taking part in debates, so its not a one way street, if I stopped posting here I think my game would develop less quickly.

Great stuff Daragh. Everything I would have asked has been asked as well as everything I wouldn't have thought to ask so I'm just joining the fanboys to say thanks. Good read.

You seem to loathe "regular" employment. If you were offered a regular 9-5 job, that paid as much as you earn annually playing poker (or as much as you hope to earn), would you take it? If not, why not?

Do you accept that poker is a form of gambling? And that no matter how astute a player you are, or how good your understanding of the game is, it is still a form of gambling?

Do you consider yourself an outsider?

Do you think that you, Daragh <second name>, are more important to society than certain other people? You don't pay tax after all...

Is a homeless person just as worthy of respect as you are?

Why do you think it is so important for you not to work for someone else?

In what percent of the world's best players do you rate yourself? Top 10%? 5%?

If you rate yourself highly, why do you think (and I don't mean disrespect here)
you are still basically grinding it out at 1/2, or 2/4?

And finally, do you think you are special? (Not unique, but special or better than the majority of others).

Very interesting read, thanks for taking the time to answer. Few more for ya:

For online cash do you normally play Tribeca, or are there any other networks that you regularly play ?

Do you have a RB deal ?

At 6max cash, how tight do you usually play UTG (or UTG +1 first in) ? How would you typically play low pp's from this position against a table of average players ?

For online cash, at the start, did you spend any significant amount of time playing your way up through the micro limits, or did you jump straight in at 50/1 ?

    Thanks.

No I havent. Id be kind of scared to do one, what happens if it turns out im an idiot!

Damn it man take the Mensa certified tests - they hold them pretty regular here in Dublin at a cost of c.50€ (well it was that 4 year ago). I would be intrigued as to your results and would be genuinely interested in the difference in scores between the tests - at a basic mundane level it would point to which basic underlying attribute is most important in Poker! Or perhaps it would show that you score the same in both (this would be v interesting) and would show that you need a well rounded intelect to be successful at poker.

Seeing as how you like to gamble when you have an edge can I suggst that you challenge a friend for a few hundred quid as to who would get into mensa - I can assure you from what I have read I think you would be a cakewalk to score top 2% in Culture Fair and from the manner in which you articulate your points I would be confident that you also score in that bracket in the catrell B. I would also like to add PillowTalk to the mix here as whilst he is clearly an outstanding player he doesnt seem to be able to articulate his posts as well! I would be interested to see if there is a trend.

Would you consider taking a staking deal to be able to play 5/10NL, 10/20NL and higher now, instead of a year or more down the line? If so what kind of staking deal would you find fairest?
Would you prefer to get there under your own steam?

IQ tests are highly emotive topics and culturally sensitive imho. (If the aborigines set the tests we'd all be idiots "what do you mean you can't dreamwalk" "which of the grubs below will kill you if you eat it").

You could use the same argument to prove pigeons are smarter than Labradors.

There are alot of people that I know who would score very highly in an IQ test, but have the basic cop on of a slug.

I personally think IQ tests are stupid.

Thanks for your insight Hector Jelly it has made for some interesting reading.

What do you think of the overall standard of live poker in Ireland?

Do you think that the Irish Scene is influenced by what people see on Telly and the assumption that it is okay to act like a t*t at the table?

Would you ever think of teaching people poker

Would you ever sponsor a player in an event

    How do you handle tilt

Do you think the chiefs game has tightened up lately?

Have you ever called a bet on the River to get information on a player for later in a tournament.

    Thanks
ps happy Christmas and all that cr*p

Ultimately the culture that sets the tests puts more emphasis on something like spatial relations then empathy or on logical reasoning then clerical accuracy. The IQ test seeks to pin a single number on a complex idea like "intelligence" without taking into account the weighting that should be attriubute to frontal vs parietal lobe activity let alone the functional value of being able to solve a Rubics cube in your head when compared and contrasted with the ability to articulate an alternative point of view clearly.

This is what I was getting at when I was being a little facetious with the Aborigines argument. And before some wag suggests that I must have failed an IQ test before, I have sat several and contorted the outcomes by doing some simply practise beforehand. IMHO, they rank a step above the "what kind of person are you" personality tests in women's mags.

Sorry for dragging this thread off topic, lets get back to the well and any further IQ test discussion can be taken to humanities (I'm game!).

freaky, I took that test in Mrs S's Cosmopolitan last night. I'm a 'keeper' apparently (but also manipulative seeing as I lied to most of the questions ;) )

(and btw the stuff about sex in these mags is far more explicit than any pornography...is this what your mothers burnt their bras for??????)

For sure DeV. They don't measure all types of intelligence, but they do measure some types.

I remember an article once where scientists found a way to measure the IQ of some small animal or insect, can't remember exactly what it was. They then found a way to improve the intelligence of the anisects. At mating time they noticed that none of the female anisects were going for the smarter male anisects and the smarter ones were getting manhandled by the dumb anisects. That made me read less science journals.

You will note that why I specifically quoted the Culture Fair (the hint is in the name) test and the Catrell B as I was interested in the differing scores. I am well versed on the pitfalls of such tests - but I did say that I was interested in it at a mundane level - not for any far reaching life changing reason. Just for a different slant on things really!
