I think they're great. Not a novelty band at all but may appear so on the surface. Live they are absolutely savage, the two of them wear lion and tiger costumes but play the heaviest noise I've heard in a while. They have an album but I think it was a limited edition of 50. They're playing soon enough (next week I think) and I heartily recommend them.

thats got all the hallmarks of a novelty band, when people sing songs like that and/or appear on stage in "fancy dress" in general its hard to take them seriously and hence they get bracketed into novelty. 1 band that got away with the novelty aspect of their band was the flaming lips the were still (and rightly so) taken as a serious band

Despite the novelty-isms listed above I seriously do think of (retards) as being more than a novelty act. The music is damn good and as I said, live they are savage. Definitely one of the most interesting bands in Dublin.

100% honest i've not heard them, bit even their name sounds a bit ropey, i used to be in a band called "the abortions" i knew that they would NEVER be taken seriously

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,731 ✭✭✭DadaKopf

Why would anyone always want to be taken seriously?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

I'm not saying that they have to be taken deadly seriously (they are tongue in cheek) but just because you have a bit of humour in your music doesn't make it novelty. It's a fine line granted but I think they keep to the right side of it (novelty's on the left :p)

but how many humourous bands are considered to be "ALL TIME GREATS" I love sultans of ping etc but they're forgetable

It's not the same sort of humour though. You really have to hear them to understand what I mean. There are funny bits to the songs but the humour is really black, they make you feel uncomfortable which is a rare feat in music. They fit with old school industrial bands like Throbbing Gristle and Whitehouse.

Bell X1 - all three albums are quality

Kila - ok, probably dont fall under the term "indie" but.......

hmmm i probably replied to this before but maybe it was before i discovered the amazing We Are Knives from Belfast. awesome live band and they've just recorded an ep. essential listening for fans of Ten Past Seven / The Redneck Manifesto.

oh and seeing as (retards) were mentioned a bit in this thread - they're playing their last show on Friday the 24th at the Ballroom Of Romance. one of them is moving to Denver to save the world which is why it's their last show.

ps - Party Weirdo are the best new new band i've seen in a while.

Really? That's a damn shame. Not the saving the world part obviously. Which one of them is moving?

    Channel One are good alright.

Also worth keeping an eye on are Dark Room Notes - I'd never heard of them but checked them out after hearing Steve Cummins on Phantom say they were his No1 tip for the next big Irish band - their single seems to have some serious producer muscle behind it too, so someone believes in them.

Interesting to see some movement away from the haircut/leather jacket/guitars or earnest singer/songwriter models of Irish bands

Have you ever actually read his lyrics? They are non-sensical smatterings of uncoordinated bs. I reckon he uses google to find words that rhyme to help him write songs. Pathetic excuse for a musician. There are loads of unsigned acts in this country who have more talent in their excrement than he has in his entire body.

Headgear, little known it seems, but undeservedly so.

Saw them at EP, didn't really stand out for me. Possibly because it seems they're trying to do the Frames thing about 10 years too late.

    Redneck Manifesto
    Jape
    Gran Casino

There was this other band I saw that were amazing but for the life of me I can't remember their name. There was just two of them (brothers I think, from down the country), one on semi-acoustic with a really really heavy gauge string on the first string and the other on drums. Lots of time changes with jazzy chords played really fast. Anyone know their name?

2 years and 6 pages in and no ones mentioned Berkeley? Shame on you all.
