Malin Head at 13z was at 5C and reporting hail. Knock is still at 2C and sleet. but remember that knock is above 200M (650ft) above sea level.

in Wicklow its a wet showery 7C

And that % drops as you go down the Wicklow Coastal strip. :(

100% for the Wicklow Hills though just 4 miles inland of me :)

Looking at the NRA reports Castlrea in Roscommon is now down to 1 degree,I dont know what the elevation is though.

Thats a fair point about Knock mothman, 650 ft is quite high when it comes to the difference between wet rain /sleet and snow, the latter at 650 but the former at sea level.

Belmullets(Co Mayo) temp has now rose to 7 degree's even after that cold front has passed through.
It actually rose one degree since 12.

That temp is a big NO NO for snow.

The cold air hasnt really arrived as such but will sweep
countrywide this evening. 50% for a white Christmas
in Dublin is propbably about right as they were talking
about lying snow i think :) What gives me confidence
is that showers are making it right to the east coast :)
And remember a trough is expected later tonight and again
into tomorrow, evrything lookin good. :)

Heres 2 charts the first shows how upper air temps are
now and the second at midnight tonight, notice the difference??
the Cold air hasnt arrived really just yet :D

Just back in from last minute shopping in Ballybofey, and I see the [Rain or Shine Thread] is Closed ? very strange decision for Christmas Imho, I will post my report here.

The temperature is dropping fast, there is an overcast cloudbase which looks a bit different to the normal grey. It feels as though it could snow, or it could rain, but changes are in the air.

Must put on a big fire now, and prepare for a Whiteout :D .

Im currently watching a development southwest
of Iceland progressing southeast, it looks like a comma
low or could be just a very active trough, makes pretty
    viewing :D

    sat.gif

PS. Its NOT that PL to the north of Scotland

Also temperature beginning to drop here in Dublin down
to 5.4 on my WS ;)

Maybe the Met have picked up on that now North Leinster
is in the risk zone, latest warning.......

    Weather Warning
Very cold over the Christmas period, this evening, tonight, tomorrow (Christmas Day) and overnight on the 25th. Widespread frost and icy condition. Snow showers also, with moderate to high accumulations (5 – 10cm) likely especially in Ulster Connacht, west Munster and north Leinster where some drifting may occur. Snow showers more scattered elsewhere. Early indications suggest that it will become mild later on the 26th (St. Stephen’s Day) Valid 24th December 18:00 to 26th Dec 12:00

I always never know am i in north Leinster?? :D:D:D

It was just debating that for myself! I think north Dublin would be counted as nth Leinster, keep telling myself it is anyway :D

Certainly getting colder here by the minute it seems :)

Paddy if you had opened the thread and read the last post in it, you will have noticed that I closed it for a good reason and that was to keep all talk of current weather ie snow on this thread including reports.
I also said I'd re-open it when the current snow excitement dies down ie very shortly on sunday night.

Looking at the NRA reports a lot of the north Leinster ones dropped another 2 degree's from 5 to 3 at 2 pm-still not cold enough for significant snow but they will drop further so thats not a problem for snow lovers tonight.

Looking at the local ones here for 2pm, the 2 degree difference between Arklow and Baltinglass is still showing up.
3.5 c in west wicklow and 6.5 in the East.
Thats a crucial 2 degree's in the difference between snow and rain/sleet.
Though I do expect the coastal one to go to 0 and the inland one to go below, the lower temp in Baltinglass would always mean more snow settling there than on the coast.

The same would apply between Knock in Mayo and Belmullet in Mayo.

Take a drive out to croghan or aughrim or Ballycooog, camp out and wait:D

Otherwise if you are in Arklow town, its a maybe.
There should at least be a shower or two in the next 24hrs but head to the hills 4 or 5 miles out the road if you want a definite chance of pegging snowballs in the next 24hrs :)

Fingers crossed for Tallaght, it's down to 2.3c according to http://www.nra.ie/RoadWeatherInfo/Map/leinster/index.html while down the road at the Arklow bypass it's still 5.2c.

The trough feature now showing west of Ireland
as an increase in showers and intensity, these
showers should make it across the whole country
    so watch them temps :)

What are the chances of it snowing in Limerick??

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,778 ✭✭✭✭ninebeanrows

Well showers are now merging into a band and spreading
east, precipitation for all this evening, snow very likely
watch out on the roads :D:)

    Should happen for a time
I'd like to see it getting a lot colder first though.
So far snows been confined to parts of the north and mainly on higher ground.
The showers hitting the west are mostly rain as temps are mostly in the range 3-5 degree's.
They need to get down to 1 degree for some certainty, I expect they will.
There is a doubt hanging over coastal areas still though in the west.

would i be right in thinking that eastern areas have a better chance
of seeing snow becuase the temperatures are dropping lower
and frost is beginning to form? Currently 3.2c and falling
so i reckon it should be cold enough for at least some
of the wet stuff once it reaches here. I wont be happy
until its 1. something though ;)
