Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I know it sounds petty but I have being pulling nearly 10 hour shifts a day since the middle of December and all over the week of Christmas then I was working from early afternoon til late. Last Thursday evening I was supposed to be finished at 8...I wasn't out until after 11. And Monday night, (new years eve) I thought I would never get out. Myself and the other two chefs were convinced we'd be celebrating New Years in the kitchen

Any plans I make with friends have to be cancelled or I am running dead late. Anytime I tend to get to myself there's a manager or a chef ringing and bawling at me to come in or cover for a few hours. I honestly thought that I'd get my break this week but no.

I know there is tougher professions (doctors, nurses, paramedics, any of the emergency services really) but chefs, retail staff and bar workers just get the **** end of it too. We're understaffed but we can't hire anyone because there is no one to hire.

I had plans to meet friends tomorrow. I promised them I would try to meet them around Christmas. I couldn't. Anytime I try meet these people, work gets in the way. I get it, they're 9 to 5ers. They don't get that not everyone works Afternoons to late evenings and most weekends.

I had to tell these friends that I couldn't meet up with them now because of work. My friends are pissed at me now because they think I can't say no and I am a workaholic. Try explain to them that I can't say no because we're understaffed and no one wants to be a chef.

Sharpen my knives? I just want to set fire to the world and watch it burn....

(apologies for the rant..I am just in the middle of battling a breakdown)

@ Mozzletoff, that is awful hard going. Would it be the same in a different kitchen? It might be no harm to look around. Don't let your health suffer over a job.

I have been offered jobs in other kitchens but the reason they're trying to poach me is they're in a similar if not worse position than the kitchen I am working in. I like where I work, don't get me wrong, the kitchen works as a complete team and we treat each other like a family. Plus I was promoted and was given a raise, anywhere else that offered me a job wouldn't match what I am currently getting now. Also work is only a two minute drive from me. One place I was offered work was the far side of the county and for less money

I am sorry for banging on about it but I guess I am sick to the back teeth of it. I was considering becoming an agency chef at one stage, another chef friend of mine was trying to talk me into it. Great money but it's a **** load of travelling here, there and everywhere and again a lot of hours.

I think I want to change professions but that means getting retrained and the things I would love to be retrained in take years of college and university. If I could just take my days off and not have to answer a work related phone call for at least one week, I think I'd be ok again.

I had a nap where I dreamt I beat up a guy dressed as Santa pretending to collect for charity.

Just thought I'd let you know.

There's a lot of positives so Mozzle. I know what its like to be run ragged in a job I hate and also the frustration of wanting time off in a job I love. Not having your proper days off can lead you to feel resentful and angry with the work as well as the physical impact such as exhaustion.
    Look after yourself in it.

I feel you Mozzie, I work in front of house and while I’ve been off the last few months while I’ve been away, if I ever get out of work at the time I’m scheduled to finish it’s a miracle! And don’t even get me started on being called in to cover shifts or fill in for a few hours. Only another week or so and then I have to go back to it :(:(

Think I killed the Dalai Lama in my dream last night. Didn't get to finish it unfortunately as I woke after we crashed the stolen airport fire brigade jeep. I've been waking at the same time every morning at 2 and 5 like clockwork and its so annoying. I might actually try finish that dream as a short story later.
