You should buy the best calves that you can afford. If you are only going to buy a few then buy good Charolais or Limo calves. The Fresian and Jerseys sound cheap but they are cheap for a reason and that is that they are hard to feed, poor to convert feed to muscle, eat as much if not more than a good animal.
Farmers bless em have short memories, it was only 2 years ago you couldn't hardly give away fresian type cattle.
As for the white heads, every second one of them is a Holstein dress up as a Hereford.
Good cattle will always find a buyer even on a tough year

No but demand won't start again until feb so supply and demand would be at same level. There is always a few oct calves in mid Nov when I'm looking anyway.

Maybe the man doesn't mind paying good money for good calves. 50 quid could be the difference between a r+ and an O=!

Lads on DD asking up to 650 for Fr bull weanlings ! Absolute madness. Around 350 is the value of the best of them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,078 ✭✭✭bogman_bass

You want something with reasonably high protein to build frame. Something in the 16%+ range

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,481 ✭✭✭✭Reggie.

Yep. Wean 'n' Build is a Glanbia nut. Works really well whenever I used it on similar stock.

I don't know mart prices at present as I seldom attend due to the fact that most marts are "controlled" by dealers
I have been buying a few suck calves from local dairy farmers in the last few weeks to rear on.
Paying €135 (average) for 10 day to 2 week old AAx/HEx bulls and €65 for nice type Friesians.
I seldom buy heifer calves unless they are potential replacements to the suckler herd.
