    No sign of them closing.
The government said today that hospitality industry would be closed again but retail and gyms would stay open.

2020 probably saw more home gyms set up in Ireland than any previous year... For good reason. I'd say 2021 is not going to be much different until the final quarter.

Seems like a form of lockdown #3 is on the horizon. I find it difficult to believe that if numbers continue to rise we won't see gym closures and other restrictions in at least some counties, even if Leo is not quite ready to say that yet.

There was an equipment drought during lockdown #1 and #2, but from what I can see, at the moment there is a lot of stock out there to be had ... I'd suggest, if people have the dosh and have the space, then go get it.

I suppose time will tell on how the changes in hospitality affect numbers.

Just on the home gym, I think having a gym to leave the house and go to has been a massive mental break with working from home. Apart from collecting the little one from school, the gym is the only time I've been getting out lately, though work has been mental which has been a factor.

100 percent. Good to have both options though

Thank god, I'm only getting back into it properly at this stage. The thoughts of another lock down is too much to contemplate.

Has anyone heard what the FlyeFit hours are over the Christmas period?

Going by their FAQ page "All other FLYEfit Gym locations will open between 05.30 and 23.15 Monday to Friday and 06.30 to 21.15 Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays"

Non-essential retail to remain open and gyms for individual training only, this is great news and will help me get through this again!

    Gyms to stay open official.

    Thank God for some sense.

The young fellas training in groups is starting to sneak back into Carlisle. I wish a bit of cop on would be imposed by staff, if not exercised by young fellas. Great to have the facility back. Would hate to see it vanish again.

    Good news alright.

Take January joiners out of the equation and a lot of Gyms, particularly smaller ones would probably end up closing their doors for good.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Gyms closed again at some point in Q1 2021 I'm afraid.

Very happy to hear this, I was sparingly in the gym over the last few weeks expecting them to close again.

Knowing now they won't, I start my program back up and look to actually make some gains.

I went hell for leather on the off chance they'd stay open!

Delighted now. Actual progress being made for the first time this year.

I saw this happening in CWD Ben D, I messaged the business in Facebook and said that this will result in closures happening again. I see this morning quite large stand up signs around the building stating "individual training only". Hopefully they enforce this and then we'll be good!

hi, I see the line used for gyms is: "Non-essential retail will remain open as will gyms for individual training only"

Does this mean you can just go to the gym or do you have to book a 1:1 socially distanced session with a trainer?

It just means organised classes are cancelled. BAU for the rest of the gym.

absolutely delighted with this, makes complete sense.

though I would have liked to see them make masks mandatory. or least gyms should do it themselves. if any clusters happen to pop up we could be ****ed. why not try minimize the risk.

Because wearing a mask in the gym is balls.

Do ye think there's much chance of the gyms closing again at the next review on the 12th of January again or are they more likely to stay open given they weren't closed this time?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 575 ✭✭✭vafankillar

gyms being forced to close again would be...bigger balls?

if every stopped being a baby and wore the mask it would reduce the risk of spreading and closing again.

Masks and high intensity cardio don't mix.

Using them in places where they make sense is fine however.

Yeah, this is a concern. I think there was a sense of allowing the gym to get some memberships in for Jan, and then if numbers are falling a good bit they might stay open - it there hasn't been a good slowdown by 12th Jan I imagine they may be closed along with non-essential retail. Hopefully once the numbers are going in the right direction it will be ok but that depends on people's behaviour in houses and shops etc. as well as gyms.

Keep numbers down and stay in your own area and there’s no need for a mask

Limited numbers and sanitizing should be enough. Wearing a mask to train is almost as dumb as wearing a mask to eat.

Yeah. There's no way I can wear a mask. I'm gasping for air as is. You can work away, I don't believe in telling people what, or what not to wear.

Agreed along with that at this stage id imagine their being guided from where they've seen cases originate in the past so gyms and leisure centres have probably been run well. Where I go were limited by time and can only use the gym or pool but its being cleaned more than any restaurant etc ive been to.

If they put the rowing machines outside i'd be ok with that, might add a bit of realism but probably not great for the equipment.

They don't know where a lot of cases originate. They only go back 48 hours in the contact tracing which is why the HPSC reports on outbreaks are limited.

That's not to say gyms are sources of transmission but just that the absence of evidence isn't necessarily evidence of absence.

But it's an environment where you can control a lot of things and minimise transmission without needing to close another sector

I don't think calling people baby's for not wearing masks is helpful and I don't like wearing a mask as much as anyone else but, if I had to wear one to train in the gym then I'd wear one because training at home isn't the same as training with others in the gym.

The social aspect of going to the gym and training with others pursing the same goals as me is just as important to me as the physical benefits I get from going to the gym.

You somehow just perfectly encapsulated the exact reason I train at home.

Have you done anything physical while wearing a mask??

Yep, I have done training where I was working wearing a fireproof mask and a helmet with a closed visor for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, and carrying a fair bit of gear. A lot of people in emergency services or maybe on some military courses will have done something like that. It's not pleasant, it is claustrophobic and it's hot, but I have not seen anyone keel over due to oxygen deprivation yet.

I appreciate that you wrote a few posts back that you were 'gasping for air'. Maybe you have a particular condition that causes this, and have a doctor's note or whatever, but for what it's worth, gasping for breath is not a normal reaction to wearing the type of light and general purpose masks that most people wear, even if you're exerting yourself.

I don't actually care that much about mask wearing to be honest, but I do think that in smaller gyms where social distancing is not that practical, mask wearing probably does make sense and it's the norm in at least some jurisdictions. Unpleasant yes... In any way dangerous? I highly doubt it.

Let's be honest, very few people in a gym train at such a level that wearing a mask would inhibit them.

Cardio for most people means walking on an incline while hanging off the rail, or sitting on the recumbent bike.

I know this doesn't apply to everyone, but definitely the vast majority.

Not talking about myself, just based on 20 odd years working in gyms.

Sure, there are a handful of people that train really hard with cardio, but it's not much more than that. Obviously people push hard in various metabolic classes, spinning etc, but with individual training, I'd see very few people really push themselves.

The new strain hadn't been seen in any tests yet. Numbers will be watched and decisions made if they need to.

I really hope I'm wrong but what with the last few days of socialising and families meeting over Xmas the numbers are probably going to get worse before they get better. I'm expecting a government panic and more extreme measures brought in.

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.breakingnews.ie/amp/ireland/nphet-confirm-new-covid-19-variant-is-in-ireland-1055032.html

Dr Cillian De Gascun, medical virologist and director of the National Virus Reference Laboratory, confirmed that the new strain of Covid-19 first detected in Britain has now been detected in Ireland.

“Preliminary data would suggest, based on a selection of samples analysed from the weekend, that the novel variant from the UK is present in Ireland. However, given the timeline of the samples analysed, it would seem that the novel variant is not solely responsible for the recent increase in case numbers seen in Ireland.”

I'd take it as 100% fact the UK strain is here TBH.
Gyms are indeed open but I was replying to "The new strain hadn't been seen in any tests yet" which isn't at all correct.

It's analogous to folk being 100% dead prior to that being pronounced..... The prognosis doesn't change.

If the confirm in 3 days time what was seen last weekend it was still seen last weekend.

In the UK they knew about the UK strain months ago.

I hadn't seen that but the fact remains that they are unlikely to increase restrictions just yet until it appears the number of cases starts to escalate.

Time will tell. Can only hope it doesn't take hold and cause cases to jump.

If they did this it would prove a big change of direction just a few days after announcing hospitality/personal services were the only ones to close.

I think there may be updated modelling figures yesterday, so new information I guess. But I agree it's a bit indecisive.
