Thanks everyone for the advice, in the end i decided to buy a ladies road bike which fits me perfectly as opposed to a cheaper male frame which was just too stretched etc

Hopefully will start training on the bike this week.

    I have another question!

I read somewhere that having a belt for your number is better than having it pinned to you why is that?

I think you are meant to wear your number on their back for the bike section and your front for the run section - not all races issue two numbers so during transition from bike to run with a belt you can easily rotate the number from your back to your front. I also don't like using safety pins on expensive technical tops or even more expensive tri suits/tops.

From a Tri perspective the race belt along with lock laces will be your cheapest purchase :)

I second that- the best €10 you'll ever spend on gear!

Can anyone recommend a good triathlon around July/August that isn't sold out?

I've checked the various race calenders but just want to make sure I'm not missing out a tri that hasn't been announced or scheduled yet.

    cheers guys

    Hi Nerraw1111
If you want to wait until Sept 6th, we'll be running our 3rd triathlon in Lough Key Forest Park, Co. Roscommon. We're not opening for registration until June as races seem to be filling up way to quickly these days and there'll be no places left in any of the races for the newbies who want to start training over the summer.
    www.loughkeytri.com for details

Thanks Ladytri, that sounds interesting and time is suitable, what's the distance?

I'm finding races filling up so quickly a bit of a problem. I only find out about a race before it's sold out

Any other races in late July early August? Give myself a few months to train for one.

If you feel that you're able for it, the Carna triathlon is a really beautiful race. The run is quite tough though and the cycle is rolling. There's a massive hill out of transition which is a bit scarey looking. However a lot of people really enjoy the challenge of the race. There were a few threads on it a few weeks ago.

    *edited to say
Carna is actually the Galway Tri Club race, it's held out in Connemara hence the referral to the "Carna" race.

Carrick-on-suir tri on July 11th. Registration has not opened yet, nice 750mtr downstream swim, 20K bike course is flattish and the 5k run has a bit of uphill start but the second half is along banks of the suir.

    What race MCOS?

Lough Key is sprint distance with a lake swim. Cycle is 23km over an undulating course, the 5km run is through the forest trails- really beautiful, but then again, I'm biased:)

Doing the Portlaois Try-athlon on saturday. It's my first tri swim in a pool as opposed to open water so interested to compare the times and also to see how crowded the lanes get (6 people in my lane). I'm expecting to be slower in the pool than in open water. Bit nervous about the cycle though, there are 12 roundabouts to be negotiated on open roads.

It's great to be back in the tri season again :).

The little Bo Peep one in Kenmare at the start of August has space and is open. Don't know much else about it- will be the first year for me doing it.

Good luck to everybody doing a tri this weekend too...

    About to get a helmet.

Be honest....do time trial helmets look ridiculous at super sprint triathlons?

Only slightly less ridiculous than on the commute to work.
But the 5 seconds you save and get to spend in bed are so sweet!

For some reason, I have in my head that these people quite enjoy lounging around the sitting room in full lycra and pointed helmet.

At least it gives me somthing to smile about as they cross the finishing line while I rack up my bike for a run :D

Must admit I do like the look of the go faster stripes on that giro helmet but I'd rather wear baggy lycra than one of those - and I hate baggy lycra :p

I was watching the PESS triathlon with MarieC last week and one guy did the bike leg in a munster shirt, black motorbike helmet and a mountain bike with a lock hanging off the saddle (it was rag week)... way more entertaining than the guys with chicken legs and pointy helmets :D

On his first triathlon a guy I know did his swim in the race t-shirt and speedos and cycle on a bike with a bell and a basket on the front ... its a good few years ago now!

Thanks MCOS for the best wishes. I'm told it's to reach freezing tonight.... Now I'm all a flap... should I leave out a long sleeved knitted ganzie for the cycle with no.s attached or my short sleeve 'sexy' cycle top & run the risk icycle nose syndrome might somewhat reduce the sexiness valuation....
Please let me finish running.... (even if I have to walk most of it.... don't let me walk back the last bit when they're all watching!!! ;) )

Ms K Sir A, I was also looking at the weather and am contemplating a long sleeved running top for the bike and run. Being wet coming out of the pool and the cold morning decided it for me. Although I hear the first bit of the bike is uphill so may warm up quicker than expected;) Oh the dilemma's!!

    Best of luck tomorrow.

Way hey... First Triathlon done with finesse!! Ok I finished the dam thing without having to resort to walking the run section, alright??? I am absolutely thrilled with myself, and thank you to Trilogy & all concerned who put on a great show. I had been content enough that I could do the swim & the Cycle, but was genuinely concerned that I wouldn't be able to do the run. In the end it turned out that the run was my best event. Who would've thought?

As an absolute beginner/couch potato/non-sporty type of 'ould one', who started training only a couple of months ago, and never ran before... All I can say is if you're gearing up for your first one, trust me, you can do it. But definately... make use of a local club. It's easy to postpone your planned 7pm solo run/cycle/swim til 8, then 9 then tomorrow evening til never. If your club have a set run and you get to experience the help & encouragement they give you, then you are FAR MORE LIKELY to get off your ass and join them. Even on the evenings you just don't feel a bit like it. Best of luck to all who are aiming for their first. I'm living proof you can do it!!! Go for it!!!! :)

We did great didn't we? Each and every one out there.... we all did great!!! And that sunshine! :) There was more than ONE uphill in that cycle. I had done the route a couple of times and was prepared for it, but it's no wishy washy handy cycle doddle for a first time event is it?

Well done Ms K Sir A, It was a great day and it's great to have the first Tri under the belt and a PB to boot:D. Lovely day as well and glad not to have to use the long sleeve top after.

I was just happy not to be last getting out of the pool. In the end I wasn't even last out of my lane:D Agree with you on the number of hills, it made for a tough enough cycle, never mind the number of roundabouts but I must say they were well marshalled by the Triolgy club. I enjoyed the run and even passed a few.
Will post up a better report on my log when I get a chance.

Roll on the next one, cheers to all who offered advice on here over the last few months.

Thanks Papamike. & well done to you too.

I'm afraid I was joint last out on my lane of 4 in the pool. But hey, knocked a couple of minutes off my last timed 30 lenghts which I'm pleased with. When the clapping started for the first person getting out and I was only at about 20 lengths that was rough. I hadn't expected the applause. But they applauded me too when I dragged myself out of the pool and that was perfectly alright with me!!! :) I never really got into a comfortable zone with the swim. But 9.30am swim and me don't go that well together!!! :)

Like you I think I passed about 3 or 4 ppl running with which I amazed myself. So hats off to us. That was a good feeling considering I spent the past fortnight saying to myself " whatever you do don't walk the run bit, what ever you do don't walk the run bit, whatever it takes you have to run it" over and over again. In the end it wasn't the struggle I was expecting at all. For the run itself I kept visualising those after event texts I would be sending, and wanting to be able to say I ran it all. It seemed to keep me going too.

Something someone in the club said to me the first night I went out for a run stayed with me too, & I think it's a good idea to have it in your head before you train or compete. "you don't want to go home and be thinking later that you had more in you and you could've done better". It's easier to quit than it is to stay going sometimes, but having that notion in the back of your mind helps to egg you along. Nothing worse than being disappointed in yourself when you know you could've done better.

The following are a few tips I thought of that might help others with their 1st in no particular order. :)

Ask for help if you're unsure with your bike set up when leaving it into transition before the race. I had mine in the wrong gear and it needed more air in the tyres too. I would never have thought of that if someone hadn't been there to help me. Absolutely silly I know, but still I hadn't thought of it.

Also in set up.... rem to leave your gear out in the order you are going to need it. So your towell is on top, the tops you might be going to put on will be under that etc.

A lot of competitors used a plastic storage tub to store their gear in transition. It didn't apply to us, but I imagine if it were raining that would be essential. Also I imagine it is easier to see and access your bits than trying to find them in a bag.
Pick a mad colour so that you can spot your tub from a distance too when you're rushing to your bike, (advice from an experienced competitor).

I heard someone got penalised by 2 minutes too for taking off their helmet before parking their bike. The rules are... don't even think about touching your bike until the helmet is on your head when leaving, and don't touch your helmet when you're coming back until your bike is on the rack.

For the pool swim the passing rules were as follows. If you are gaining on another competitor then touch their heels, they are obliged to pull in at the END of the pool to let you pass. No passing mid lane. There will be time penalties for both not pulling over to allow someone pass, & passing mid lane. I have no idea what the rules are for open water swims.

Don't underestimate the amount of time you will need to pack your bits and recheck everything the night before. It was something I hadn't put much thought into until the night before. I was on the phone to another competitor going through the, do you think we will need.... routine. If you had it in your head this is something you will do in a few minutes as I had, think again.

Cameras, phones, money etc are all things you probably won't want to have with you. Leave these in your car out of the way.

Check where you will be parking the night before too if you can, the usual parking wasn't available to competitors at the leisure centre for our event. & don't get caught with a b&*%"d parking fine of FORTY FREAKING EURO, cos your head is so distracted that morning that it never ocurred to you to stick a measley 2 Euro in the meter. The event is costly enough as it is. You don't need that on top of it. I KNOW!! Most unsporting of Laois co co too I feel given the circumstances.

Listen to the pre-race briefing!! That is not the time to be tuned out.

The only other thing I can think of that struck me about the day was the sense of solitude. You are on your own. You are alone with your thoughts for the swim, then the cycle, then the run... you will do lot of talking to yourself. (Well, clearly I did anyway) There will be ppl there such as marshalls etc that will be giving you encouragement, which is really brilliant, but you are on your own for a long while. Yet when it's all over you wonder how it all happened so fast. It absolutely flew. & you'll have no problem grinning for those cameras!!!

Hope some of this is of some help to those still to do their first tri. :)

    Hi,
I've my first tri in the NAC coming up soon and I was wondering what to wear for it? Sorry if this has been asked before.
Would Tri shorts be good and if so where can I get them at a reasonable price.
Will most people just hop out of the pool and head out on their bikes wearing what they swam in?

    Thanks
    Paul

    Hi kerinsp,

Hope the training is going well. For my first one at the weekend I went with a pair of tri shorts for the swim and just threw a top on for the bike and run. The tri shorts were fine for the swim. Not sure where you are located but in Dublin there are a good number of places to buy them - Amphibian King and Wheelworx, to name 2 I can think of off the top of my head.

However I noticed that a lot of the more experienced people swam in either tri shorts and a tri top or the complete one piece tri suit. Makes for a quicker transition onto the bike. If I was to do another pool tri I would wear the tri top as well and save a minute or 2.

Best of luck with the tri and let us know how you get on

In the end it wasn't the struggle I was expecting at all. For the run itself I kept visualising those after event texts I would be sending, and wanting to be able to say I ran it all. It seemed to keep me going too.

Had a great swim by my standards too as I knocked over 4 minutes off my previous best timed 750.

The guys in my lane were joking before we got in about what it would be like hearing all the clapping when the first guy got out and sure enough it was a bit off putting when I had about 12 lengths to go but to be fair everyone got a clap when they got out which was great.

However not as off putting as the lane counter telling me I had 5 to go at one stage and I all delighted with myself until I realised half way down that length that it couldn't be 5 as they were counting every 2 lengths as 1 so it meant 10 to go:( To be fair the lane counters were great and very encouraging as I gasped for air the last few lengths.

So just to add a few tips to what Ms K Sir A mentioned for anybody heading into their first tri in the next few weeks. Again in no particular order and people probably know these already:

If it's a pool swim be honest when giving your estimated time to the other people in your lane. It will make for a more comfortable swim. Don't worry if you are the slowest as when the faster guys pass you at the wall take off after them and get a nice draft down that length, Got me through 6 or 7 lengths:D

One tip I got on here was to kick strongly for the last 2 lengths so as to get the blood down there to prevent dizzyness on exiting the pool. No dizzyness on Saturday

If you have a tri suit or tri top to go with tri shorts I would wear it. It will save you time in transition. I didn't and I spent over 2 mins in transition and a good portion of that was putting a dry top onto wet skin...not easy.

Bike in easy gear to start off and use the first bit of the bike to get some water/sports drink on board...even if you think you have drank half the pool:D

Practice getting off the bike. If you can, take your feet out of the cycle shoes on your approach to the dismount line and cycle with your feet on top of the shoes as when you get off it is easier to run in your socks/bare feet than on your cleats. A few more seconds saved!!

Use lock or elastic laces for your runners. Just means you have to slip them on and away you go. More seconds saved:D.

Over the last while in running races I have always been wary of marshals telling you that you are nearly there, keep going, only a short bit left etc., but the guy who told me that I was doing great and only had a couple of hundred metres to go as he was standing 10m away from the 4k mark on the run was the best yet, I had to laugh:D Don't think he was a marshal though but it got me through the last km.

Last of all, enjoy it. Its meant to be fun, if you manage to pass people encourage them to keep going, if people pass you, say well done also. That was the main thing I took from Saturday, the friendly and helpful attitude of all competitors and marshals.

papamike and Ms K Sir A, really excellent posts by both of you! You really summed up the spirit of your first event and you are the kind of athletes that give an event its atmosphere, smiling as you go and having great respect for everyone else and most importantly enjoying yourselves :D

    Hi all

Haven't been on in a while. I hope everyone's well. Congrats Mrs K Sir A and Pappamike on your recent tri's. You must be thrilled with your sucess. Thanks a million too for taking the time to post your tips. They really are a big help. I didn't know that about the penalty points for taking off your helmet early or about the etiquette for passing people in a pool swim. So if you think of any other helpful tips it would be great to hear them.

Mrs K Sir A what did you wear for your tri? Did you get a tri suit for your first one?

As for me think training has been going ok. Had a bit of a slump for a while there because work just got mental but went out on Friday and did a trial run of the whole tri and I think it went good. Managed to finish the distances which was a great boost. My knees were well sore though after the biking. Any advice on why this may be the case? I think I might have been going in too high a gear for the speed I was going because my saddle etc seems to be at the right height...hmmmm

Also went out yest and did my first 10K run! So proud of myself....never thought I could run that far ever!Knees were really sore afterwards though..hmm wonder what's wrong?

Best of luck this weekend MCOS

Lads its great to read about all of yer achievements. Im doing my first one at Joey Hannon, can't wait!!!! so long as I can get my run up to scratch.
R.e the knees exciement, the only advice I can offer is to go to your bike shop and make sure thte bike setup properly for you. I found when I first started cycling I needed to be fitted to the bike properly and my cycling improved dramatically. It seems that if your saddle isn't the right height, and shoes aren't right size you do more harm than good

Im doing the try a tri, don't say 3 weeks, Im excited but so badly prepared, I can barely run two miles at the moment, and only getting a hang of the swimming. My cycle is great though,it is a bit daunting though especially as Ill be away for one of those 3 weeks with no chance to train!! Hopefully the physio wil teach me a few tricks to sort out my legs, everytime I run I strain something, despite stretching!! very frustrating!!

haha richiemack I'm completely the same. My fiance keeps saying I am the most injury prone person he knows. :DThink most of it stems from having a bad back for years so everything else seems to come out of that!

Ah 3weeks is plenty of time. U'll be flying it come race time im sure!

    Hi Flynne8
There's nothing wrong with this wetsuit as an entry level one for under €120

I'd recommend going into cycle superstore or somewhere to try an orca suit on for size before ordering on the net.
Not in the Dublin are so not sure about open water swims there but I'd say there'll definitely be a bit of activity over the next couple of weeks if the temperatures come up a wee bit. I know I was in open water from April last year so any day now hopefully.
    Good luck with it!

just been to the physio and turns out I have little or no arch in my feet, aparently its genetic, she said she was surprised I could run 2 miles. Im so happy that I found out, now Ive to get orthotics made, and will be able to run no problem, so now i'll have no excuses!!!

That's great news richiemack. At least you've got a solution to the problem.

Now all you need is the energy to do the running ;)

Skerries is a good spot. you can swim from one end of the beach to the other. generally calm... but cold about this time of year!

I am also a newbie to this triathlon idea. I am hoping to do the Carrick tri in July. So if there's anyone else down in this area let me know! I'm very much a beginner, run 4miles in approx 43mins, have only been out on the bike twice, and suffered for days! Swimming I can do, albeit not with any great speed. Hopefully I'll just cross the finish line after doing all 3 events.
