Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Unfortunately in most cases they're training the killer/shooter as well. (eg. "go hide out in the gym". Killer just goes straight to the gym as he was/is one of the students)

    Horrible gun culture.

Ah they're all probably bollocks anyway. If somebody walks into a school with a gun they're going to kill lots of people if thats their goal, no amount of drills is really going to be able to help hundreds of young unarmed kids in close quarters with a person shooting at them

Schools in the States do shooter drills where the kids practice what to do when there is an active gunman on campus i.e. go to a designated hiding place or hide under their tables and stay quiet.
not much good when the shooter goes throug the same training lol

One report indicates that he pulled the fire alarm: Hiding is exactly what folks don't do when they hear one of those.

Will be curious to hear his explanation for this, since he's been captured alive. What goes through someone's mind to think that randomly shooting in a school is a good idea?

One kid said in an interview that he was the one everyone predicted would shoot the place up. Classic case of the marginalized bullied kid getting back at the bullies, teachers or "cool" students? It'll be interesting to see what surfaces in the next few days.

This clip could be distressing. You can hear shouting and shots. You can't see anything in it though. Looks to be Snapchatted live from the scene.

Another mass shooting in the US. RIP to those who’ve died. A lot of gun deaths already and we are barely into 2018. As long as guns are as easy to buy, these will continue.

    17 confirmed deaths now. RIP.

Weapon reported to be an AR-15 with multiple magazines. Quelle surprise. The nutters/depressed/pissed off at society/whatever your having yourself favorite.........

I guarantee if someone went back on Boards and looked at topics covering the immediate aftermath of historical mass shootings in the US you'll find a trend of fewer topic views and fewer topic posts in the hours after a shooting.

A small unconscious portion of my brain thinks to itself "they obviously aren't working thinking about or showing empathy towards if their very own governmental institutions seem to be not giving a **** in the first place"

    Next topic, please

The shooter is in custody now apparently. A 19 year old student who was known to own guns

And yet he's too young to buy a beer there. Talk about having your priorities arseways.

If only the good guy had a gun to stop the bad guy with a gun.... is the argument used by someone who wants to sell two guns.

It's easy to attack gun ownership when you have never experienced it.
Let's ban people cycling on the roads because people are dying from cycling, at the end of the day cycling and guns are used for leisure and sport and 1 person out of 320 million shouldn't stop that.

    FFS.

Could they not just put a $10 countrywide levy on each bullet sold if they won't ban guns?

If only it were just 1 person out of 320 million, but even discounting every other gun crime in the States there have been around 300 people who have shot up schools in the past 5 years. At exactly what point should we start attacking gun ownership then? When it hits 500? 1,000? 5,000?

A bike cant kill 17 people if it falls into the wrong hands though.

A motorised vehicle is designed to bring a person from A to B. A gun is designed to inflict harm on other people. Tell me exactly how those two things are the same?

Ah the old NRA get the wagons in a circle defence...... Do you guys have any viable solutions for keeping weapons out of the hands of people like this?

What on earth are you on about?

If I cycle down the corridor of a school I'm not going to cause multiple deaths.

Guns are worshiped in the USA - the portrayal of them in American films and television is a prime example.

When did you last hear of anyone massacring nearly twenty people with a bicycle? Guns and bikes. Same thing. Would you let your 8 year old have a gun... actually don't answer that.

Sandy hook when all of the babies were killed changed nothing.

It'll take a private ivy league school to be hit with CEOs and politicians kids killed for the possibility of any change.

17 people unfortunately won't have the opportunity to attack gun ownership.

Seriously your attempt at logical reasoning is a big f**king fail.

    Stop trying to act intelligent.

Of the total use of motor vehicles, what percentage are used for crime?

Of the total use of guns, what percentage are used for crime?

Throw an estimate on those two numbers, compare them and then you might see why you're being ridiculous.

Banning vehicles would have a cataclysmic effect on society. Banning automatic guns from the general population... and a few people will have to find a new hobby.

    Comparing them smacks of desperation.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,815 ✭✭✭SimonTemplar

I'm thinking of when I was in school and what it would be like being there with an increasing probability of being caught up in an active shooter situation. And for the parents to be reminded every time an incident like this occurs that it may eventually happen to their children. That kind of stuff must really damage the fabric of a nation.

Why ban automatic only why not semi?

I've experienced the American flag at half mast and on the first day of class, the shock of being given a booklet of what to do during an active shooter but I've also experienced the terror that a vehicle can inflict.

    Go to bed. You're confused.

Bikes and cars are not designed to kill people, guns on the other hand when used in the manner they are designed for do. Really it's best to stop offering up a stupid analogy.

I was about to write a logical argument for why America needs to get a grip with its gun problem, but what's the point. The loss of life is terrible and for the victims' family and friend to go through such a senseless loss is unbearable, but it'll be out of the public consciousness within a few news cycles until the next one in a few months time.

Well I'm not exactly down with the firearm lingo, you can go ahead and include semi-automatic in that.

It's such devastating news again. How many more of these do America have to go through before they wake up.

The country is really has ****ed up culture around guns and their police departments

how about tackling the US culture, since it's the actual problem, not guns. how many other first world countries allow reasonably free access to firearms and have nothing even close to the same problems?

The issue here is Americans, not guns*

    * - availability of certain rapid fire weapons undoubtedly is a problem as well though

Interestingly gun sales and ownership rates have collapsed recently, so much so Remington has gone bankrupt this week
