You'd have to wonder who the BAI are for, the public or RTÉ.

The stark warning is contained in the Annual Review of Performance and Public Funding of Public Service Broadcasters, carried out for the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland by London-based company Mediatique.

Any none of the BAI staff could come to this conclusion so they employed yet again Mediatique, a media consultancy firm not based in the EU.

and both PSBs responded efficiently in order to divert funding and employees to account for the new kinds of content requirements that arose during the year, specifically to news and current affairs programming and to educational programming for children and young people, via RTÉ’s Home School Hub and TG4’s Cúla4 ar Scoil.

RTÉ increased funding to Children's Content by just €1 to €2million, in no way divert employees to it creation, nor did it divert much funding to it as RTÉ had in 2016 and 2017 reduced its spend on Children's Content, it did increase funding in 18, 19 and 20, but only in small ways, nothing to write home about. Indeed I wouldn't be surprised if home school hub wasn't funding in part by various different NGOs and Government Departments.

The reports refers to cost-cutting measures employed by RTÉ, including "reductions in top talent salaries", and says the Future of Media Commission "may well conclude that a fundamental reform of the licence fee and perhaps of other mechanisms for the delivery of PSM [Public Service Media] will be necessary".

"It is, however, our conclusion that the funding of RTÉ continues to be inadequate to permit the broadcaster to achieve its objectives and to execute either the five-year strategy seen and evaluated by the BAI or the revised strategy [not evaluated by the BAI]."

I wonder if it looked at anything really, again the allowanced paid to RTÉ staff and in particular the management's need to spend 11,000 on average on car allowances across 70 managers.

I'd love for Virgin Media to do a Prime Time style investigation in to the expenses, allowances and other goings on in RTE.

I was thinking exactly the same thing....RTE exposè on local authorities wasting taxpayers money...fair enough, and some good journalism went into that....

Technical difficulties, due to close once the new act is signed off on, but under the 2009 act Aertel remains. I wonder if it effects both the analogue version on cable and sat and digital version on Saorview.

Yeah should save them tuppence, which I am sure will go towards the running of some executives car.

Happened to hear a bit of the Claire Bryne show this morning, and Dr David Coleman was on (again). I know we can't expect any other opinions as he is the only Clinical Psychologist in the country!

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone could hazard a guess how much he would be paid by RTE for his slot on the show. I'd say he is on maybe 15mins or so?

Just watching Crime Call and a very small example of waste (in my opinion). The Garda was talking about some crimes and showing CCTV. Built into the desk in front of him was a big wide screen tv. It only displayed the number to call. Could they not have used a print out or just a plain desk as the number is on screen anyway.

This is awful ( I know!!!) but anytime he's on I keep thinking a lot of these kids ( subjects) are just 'playing the game' for attention...... like a lady was on one day about her super son was 'regressing' after potty training..... I mean the kid obviously figured he was on to a good thing

At a pure guess - maybe 300-500 and of course NK would get his cut of that. Speaking of NK, I'm thinking Conor Pope is in the Kelly camp too.

Kelly doing fierce business in RTE at the mo. Bannon wraps it up for a while and in steps, Hugh 'poshy' Wallace and Baz 'charisma by-pass' Ashmawy.

I am sure they have screen around for other sets. I be more annoyed with Claire Byrne and her new chair and table of the week show.

With the way things are going RTÉ would be very lucky to see any change in their funding.

When you think the PSO that raises 393m per year via electricity bills maybe cut to help householders.

With the rising costs across for everyone its unlikely that the government will move to change the current method of collect.

As for funding it via the Exchequer... I think that will be put on the long finger considering the other areas of spending for the government.

This is were exchequer funding becomes political in the eyes of the voter.

Seriously though, you don't really think that cancelling (if "cancelling" is even still a thing) a journalist is going to help us address climate change?

Him and the gammy guy from friends of the earth, the wile stupid one, they've been shouting the End is Nigh so long people just switch off. Calling Lee a journalist is ridiculous, town joke would be more apt.

Whatever hopes you have for your cause are lost when RTEs version of the Scottish one from Dad's Army is rolled out. "We're all doomed",Chicken Licken wouldn't have a look in with George's fleets of doomladen fantasy, you do know he's recycling his covid doom which was in itself a carbon copy of his 2008 recession doom,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,259 ✭✭✭RoTelly

Do you honestly think that George Lee is helping us address climate change? He's one of the best paid staff members in RTÉ, he's given a job and he does it, they could retire him tomorrow and we'd have a new journalist doing his job.

We are pretty much on the same page here.

Though I may have phrased it a bit clumsily my point is that there is no sense in blaming GL.

The message from IPCC won't change.

If we could only "cancel" climate change.

Not really surprised. Chris guy is absolutely unbearable - an immediate change of the dial. Now if they could just take the Two Condoms with them, it would improve the station even further.

Returned to RTE as he was on better money there than in Leinster House. What qualifications does GL have to be reporting on climate change or Covid as he previously covered.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,259 ✭✭✭RoTelly

He had better money when he left AFAIK checks list of top earners.

Oh... he only appears after that in 2014 and 2013, 179k and 180k respectively. Hasn't been there since but the number 10 spot has been held by those over that amount of money... so much for cuts.

Ton of kids training themselves up on YouTube etc, producing and presenting their own stuff to the world at a fraction of the cost leaving all those dinosaurs in the dust.

RTE is like some shite UK satellite station with property porn programming to rile up the masses when they are not at their masses.

    It's not even funny anymore.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,363 ✭✭✭SuperBowserWorld

Ah, it's good to vent now and again. I think that's included free with the license fee. 😊😊😊

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,573 ✭✭✭✭elperello

You might think t was to do with money but the reason he gave at the time was different.

He said he felt he was being ignored by FG and thought he could make more of a contribution if given the chance.

He holds a Bachelors Degree from UCD and a Masters in Economics from LSE and has been a Journalist at RTE since 1992 apart from the sojourn in Leinster House.

Sometimes journalists are formally qualified in the field they report on but more commonly they rely on their training, experience and contacts.

What one claims and the actual reality can differ hugely. I'm not buying Lee's cry baby antics on his failed political career. Lee is abysmal was front and centre of RTE's covid coverage but was incapable of asking any questions of NPHET given his complete lack of knowledge in the area. About as useful as an ashtray on a motor bike.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,573 ✭✭✭✭elperello

I suppose it would be a waste of time to ask if you have any evidence that he resigned as a TD over money?

So you reckon that there would be an expert in epidemiology at a loose end who happened to be a journalist to cover the Covid story?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,259 ✭✭✭RoTelly

I think it is more about asking questions. For example: if you take claire byrne interviewing MM on the reintroduction on Mandatory Mask wearing, she was so clearly in favour of the idea that she was testy with the Taoiseach, but a few months earlier she was like a kitten totally ready to mask up for the good of the nation, without even considering the questions that might come from so called "anti-maskers" such as "but Taoiseach only a few months ago we were advised that masks didn't work what has changed?"

People may not like either stance in questioning but if you are in a one on one interview you must play devil's advocate, otherwise you do not have a debate or any questions being asked.

I find Irish News and CA to be very bland because no one is willing to debate anything in fear they might offended someone.

The claim was made by Lee's campaign manager.

I suppose if you had a house fire you'd ring a hair dresser, which is along the same lines as sending Lee off to report on Covid. As a national publicly funded broadcaster surely the least it's funders deserve is to have suitably qualified or experienced people reporting on a subject. A first year med student would have added more than Lee.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,230 ✭✭✭TheRiverman

George Lee is the definitive doom and gloom reporter on RTE.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,573 ✭✭✭✭elperello

When did his campaign manager make that claim?

AFAIK he was frozen out by an internal FG power struggle involving his effort to have more influence on policy.

As I outlined in my other post he is suitably qualified and experienced.

If you don't like his style that's your opinion and you are entitled to it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,573 ✭✭✭✭elperello

To be fair there's not much joy to be gleaned from his last two assignments.

Hard to find the upside reporting on Covid and Climate Change.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,678 ✭✭✭Cape Clear

Suitably qualified my ass. His style has nothing to do with it. His lack of qualifications in his subject area is the issue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,573 ✭✭✭✭elperello

    In your opinion.

What about the campaign manager claim?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,259 ✭✭✭RoTelly

It is amazing how quickly this thread can move back to everything that is there to distract from the ultimately badly managed organization that is RTÉ.

    Cathal Goan: Distraction Tactics

Executive: Thinking of getting George Lee to go up for election

    CG: Eh!

Executive: as a member of FG

    CG: and the Mullholland joby

    Executive: Missioned accomplished!

    5 years later

    Noel Curran: Distraction Tactics

Executive: We've brought George Lee back so that is helpful for a while, thinking of getting Pat Kenny to move to Newstalk, that along with the usual Angelus stuff.

    NC: Eh!

Executive: Mulholland replaced by BBC Exe who had some connection to the whole Saville thing, but really not enough to get people talking.

NC: That's surprising considering the bollocking I got from Dobo on Six One.

    3 years later

    Dee Forbes: Distraction Tactics

Executive: We've decided that the Late Late should slowly morph into a telethon for various causes and that Ryan will show no real emotion.

    DF: Eh!

Executive: Claire Byrne is going to Monday nights with a psuedo-Current Affairs show but really we have some props we need using and it will be a consumer show.

DF: Well hopefully something major will happen. Now do I get those moving fee direct to my account?
