what is the problem with Browne?

Do we need to answer that ,he is way out of his depth ,poor speaker and poor understanding of politics and how it works heard him on tipp fm some time back re the apple tax ,just go get it back .....no understanding of that .he got in purely because he was the only sf person running people voted blindly for him ,he lost his town council seat a year previous no a sf voter or supporter but pity Seamus Morris was with the party he’d of been guaranteed a seat on merit and would of made a great td

I’d say there’d be more get up and go in my wheely bin. I can’t believe anyone voted for him tbh

One and only reason he got in was because of the party he was running for .pure blind votes

I voted for Martin Browne and personally I'm satisfied so far with what I've seen of him, between an issue I support and a small business I do some work for. Some people are happy with Mattie/Lowry/Cahill/Kelly I guess it's just the circles you move in.

It'll be interesting to see how the hurler gets on, celebrity candidates haven't really worked well for FG but a seat is a seat.

    Who is the hurler?

    Who is the hurler?

I thought from the other post that the hurler was hypothetical. I.e. that Sinn Fein would run a celebrity, and the other poster was guessing it would be a hurler

I’m no sf voter but to be fair to them, they don’t tend to run ‘celebrity’ candidates.

From Clare and I can say Browne has done well for workers in Shannon Heritage. By done well I mean represented their interests well.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3 rapazirlandes

I've heard a lot of FF, FG and Labour members make similar comments about Browne. To be fair, he is not the most polished politician, but as a first time TD I think he is doing a pretty good job. He broke the news about the HSE stopping testing in meat processing locations, I heard a small business owner in Golden on Tipp FM thanking Browne for getting the HSE to undertake testing for their staff to help their businesses reputation, he seems to be out meeting communities and farming groups. It's 6 months since the election and we have been through Covid lockdown. I think Browne is doing a good job all things considered and he will only get stronger as he gets trained up by the party. If he can get the likes of Matt Carthy in to the constituency to support farmers too it will help his case too.

Jackie Cahill highly critical of Leo actions last week got absolutely stung into a vote of no confidence this week and had to tow the party line seemingly, why do some of these lads even bother to pretend they are principled??

You join a political, but obligations comes with joining, in return for the exposure of being a member.

He can talk all he wants but he has to toe the party line or else try it alone like Michael Lowry and Mattie McGrath.

It’s like two people haggling over buying something...playing the game and hoping to get the price that suits u.

I don’t know Jackie Cahill, but I’ve a funny feeling he wouldn’t be too familiar with the legalities of the case.

They have to keep Leo or they’re all out canvassing again!

No point talking and getting airtime when theres absolutely zero substance to it, he wanted to be seen to criticize. Same man was over in Cheltenham at the start of the pandemic.

Lowry has been towing the FG line from a distance if you haven't noticed. Mattie didn't leave FF, FF left him...his own words.

Met Cahill a few times. He wouldn't inspire you with confidence. He's there because of his farming connections and still they wouldn't let him near the department of agriculture.

Heard that there were some journalists looking into the whole internal Civil War and resulting purge of members that happened in Tipperary Sinn Fein a couple of years ago but nothing seemed to appear in the papers yet. Looks like HQ locked down hard on members and some ex-members to stop them talking. Mary Lou's recent interview where she called some members "Pig Ignorant" was apparently designed to soothe the concerns of more reasonable members and ex-members and show that the party leadership doesn't support the likes of Browne. Also they have decided on a two candidate strategy in Tipperary next time so they hope Browne will be gone after the next election.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,071 ✭✭✭julyjane

wonder who the second could be? Martin Browne didn't exactly sail in comfortably so they risk splitting the vote with a 2 candidate strategy. D Dunne would get almost every vote in Carrick town but is he as well known outside the division? T Black from the same area as Browne

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,049 ✭✭✭digzy

Browns vote was more of a Sinn Fein one as opposed to personal.
He lost his local authority seat to tony black and basically ran because they had nobody else at the time and they probably didn’t think they’d a chance of a seat when he was selected.

Given the coalition, Sinn Fein are the alternative. There’s no way they could chance brown again. I hope they pick tony black. Nice bloke and very popular in his area.

The length of the current Dáil could be an interesting factor - will we have a general election or a local election first?

I’m in no way a sf voter nor can I see myself been ,the one and only reason brown got in is because he was a sf candidate ,he’s not fit to be a td and any time I’ve heard him speak he’s v poor .if Seamie Morris was still running as a sf td he’d of sailed in and would of been very good .can’t see brown getting in again Damian O Donoughe in nenagh is doing great work around town but probably not well known from there to south of the county .good honest hard worker and cares about people

So I've recycled this thread on receipt of the news this morning that our constituency boundaries have changed back.

So no more lowry, cahill, kelly - who on earth can we vote for in the south and hopefully for clonmel in particular, our town centre is a mess and there is a huge problem with drugs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 803 ✭✭✭jkmanc1974

Mattie a certainty -surely will be a massive push from FG for Go with Garrett - god knows who else, wonder if the Social Democrats will run anyone

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,071 ✭✭✭julyjane

I'm sure they'll find someone to run, if even just to raise their profile before the locals next year and gauge what kind of support is there.

Personally I could never warm to Garrett, he was called out before on announcing stuff he had nothing to do with but is nowhere to be seen when there's bad news. I could be reading him totally wrong but he strikes me as the kind of politician who'll be happy to keep a low profile on the back benches and vote with his party with unwavering loyalty. It looks like he's being primed for election but he just seems a bit too sweet to be wholesome.

What are FF likely to do in the deep south, will they roll out Siobhan Ambrose again?

Seamus Healy has announced today on Tipp FM that will be standing in the next General Election.

Nice man Seamus. What did he deliver for Clonmel though previously? Helping people fill up medical card forms housing apps etc is county cllr territory.

Is there a chance he'll split the 'lefty' vote that probably would be going to Sinn Fein's Martin Browne?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,086 ✭✭✭KanyeSouthEast

Big time will split it and given a choice between both I’d go with Seamus as a person but if SF are in govt a govt TD would be welcomed in the constituency

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,071 ✭✭✭julyjane

I feel if Seamus were to be elected as a TD he'd be likely to vote with a left leaning government. When he was in the dail before he disagreed with FF/FG on a lot of matters and voted accordingly, as he was free to do because he wasn't whipped like party TDs. In a tight majority independents can hold the balance of power

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,073 ✭✭✭Xenophile

The WUAG party had six councilors on Clonmel Corporation when the flood relief wall was being built, what a travesty blocking off the view to the river and the foothills of the Comeraghs. Compared to what was done in Kilkenny city it is a disgrace.

At the age of 73 he has at least three pensions, you would think he would be encouraging young people to stand.

We have had enough Independents in South Tipperary.

Luckily there are not enough "victims" to elect him as we now have full emplyoyment. The "U" in WUAG now more accurately stands for "Unemployable"

Time we had someone of ministerial quality to represent us.

Seamus is a lovely man but we need new and younger blood - he looks frailer than 73 IMO. I also dont rate Garrett Ahearne, he tried before and when he failed he got a cushy number in the Senate. I’ve no idea who will run but I hope they are new, young and enthusiastic as there is a lot of work needing doing and the same old same old see bereft of new ideas.

The sooner Mairin McGrath starts running in General Elections, the better. Genuinely the future of politics in the country.

If you think I'm any way associated with the McGrath's you couldn't be further off.

    But good one my man.

A gobshite on that gobshite Fran Curry’s Tipp Today programme. Imagine a less funnier version if possible of Pat Short! That’s Looby.

J would find it a lot easier to listen to Johnny Looby than say Ray Darcy.

Looby a great cheeerie voice early in the morning.

Why in the name of jaysus would anyone vote for Martin brown …..he has done nothing and a poor td but with sf popularity and lack of any other credible sf candidates he’ll mop up certain votes …Seamie morris is a huge loss to sf in tipp

Have they organised a voting process for citizens overseas yet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,036 ✭✭✭jem

The new North Tipp/ kilkenny will be interesting:

3 seats Lowry kelly and cahil

SF will be looking for 1 as well

I would think Lowry will def be elected and then the fun starts- cahil will miss the south bit more than the others I would say . Also many of FF voters around Roscrea area would rather vote for shep the dog than Cahil who has been non existant in the area. A big thing will be whether FF run 1 or 2. If only 1, I wouldnt be supprised if he loses his seat. SF dont seem to have a known canidate since morris jumped ship .

Kelly will be interesting - will he look at Europe again since he lost leadership- relies so hevely on Nenagh and a SF canidate could hurt him if they are based there.

North Tipp could go back to being the bell weather one again .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,339 ✭✭✭✭mahoney_j

Shinners have Damien o donoughe …sound bloke ,hard working councillor but can’t see him been elected ….not well known outside nenagh …..Kelly despite his knockers has delieverd in spades for nenagh and hydro plant in Silvermines is his baby too ….seamie morris is a huge loss to sf ..think he’ll get a seat

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,102 ✭✭✭Paddico

Why do people think Gareth Ahern will get in.

As well as been disliked within his own party he is absolutely shĩte at getting anything done

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,071 ✭✭✭julyjane

If you were to believe him he gets everything done even without being elected. I have no involvement in FG so I don't know or care whether people in his party love him or hate him but surely to get the nomination there must be someone backing him?

Is he running in the locals next year or is that beneath him? It would be a good gauge of the support if he did

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,073 ✭✭✭Xenophile

Only two Tipperary T.D.s will vote for Simon Harris for Taoiseach next week, both from the Thurles area, namely Jackie Cahill and Michael Lowry the other three will be out shortly with their begging bowels.

Begging bowels? Is that a Freudian slip?

No surprise that Jackie would do as he was told but at least ML has the cuteness to look for something in return. I agree with him (and it's not often I do) that they don't need a general election now, all parties and independent groups need to get the locals out of the way first before they can make a proper plan for it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,073 ✭✭✭Xenophile

Begging bowels? Is that a Freudian slip?

Well spotted. It was a genuine error.

In fairness to Cahill he has to vote with the party whip.

Looks like Michael Murphy and Garrett Ahearn will be going head to head for the nomination at the FG selection convention. I'm not a member of FG but if I was I know which one I'd be backing.
