Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Tipp v KK drawn 2014 final is one of best hurling games I've witnessed. Last 10 minutes were phenomenal and think were barely two scores made during it.

GAA have been great posting full matches on Youtube, and not just the obvious choices, they put up Sligo Tyrone 2002 and the 2003 Laois Kildare game, watched the Sligo Tyrone game, very little handpassing, both keepers hitting kick outs as far as they can, both teams launching long punts into the forward line and Marty Morrissey had a 'WTF is he doing there' tone when a Tyrone defender was in the Sligo half, crazy amount of evolution over that time.

    Just got this text:

The GAA, in conjunction with the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, have launched the GAA Digital Archive at Croke Park providing free access to past GAA matches to internet users around the world.

113 All-Ireland finals since 1961 are included in the archive and provincial finals from 1961 also feature. The new archive also includes All-Ireland club finals since 1989.

In all, over 500 football and hurling matches were retrieved from broadcasters and information such as date, result, venue, referee, scorers and teams and substitutions was added.

This might be useful to all GAA fans during this time of isolation!

Had a quick gander. Not bad at all.

Talking about the live games or lack there of. As was pointed out there is full games from the archives including the 1997 Ulster final between Cavan and Derry.

I've never seen Derry v Down 1994 in full before as I was 2 then but my father was at it. The 'Boys of 93' book is about Eamon Colemans sacking after that game. I have a few rare games on VHS but I refuse to upload them as opposing fans down vote the video when you upload it which angers me, I spend time uploading it and you downvote it because your team lost?

I keep them to myself now, I have all the Derry 1993 highlights with the pundit discussions, the whole RTE broadcast of Derry Dublin 93, the whole 93 final broadcast including discussion, UTV highlights and the Sunday game hotel footage. I also have the full Derry Tyrone game 1997 UTV, the 1998 Ulster Final RTE, 2000 league final Derry v Meath drawn game, 2000 Ulster final BBC, 2001 Derry Galway, Derry Kerry 2004, 2005 Tyrone Monaghan, 2005 Derry v Laois, 2008 Derry Donegal, 2009 Derry Monaghan.

The best thing about the full broadcasts is you can watch the adverts too which is enjoyable.

It’s not massively likely but on the off chance someone doesn’t know the result of one of these old games, it would help if RTÉ didn’t put who won in the EPG description.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,193 ✭✭✭✭Kerrydude1981

I love the old games, its seems to me from watching them that today's players are more skillful especially in hurling and there is a less chance that a player today will miss control a ball due to the bigger bas on the hurley's, but I do love the old games because when a player does miss control the ball they let let fly on the ground,
A skill that is long gone from the game today

The skill isn't long gone if anything it's better see the amount of sideline balls going over. Something unheard of 20 years ago. It's just not the percentage play.

Sideline cuts are unreal now, but open play ground hurling is long gone, some lads could pull on a ball and hit it further then they would striking from the hand, longer hurleys too

Would you see a player today pulling on a ball like John Fenton did for that wonder goal he scored?? I doubt it

Absolutely, look at Seamie Callanan's goal vs wexford last year. Another wonder goal. Ground hurling is mostly gone though as it generally gives away possession. 9 times from 10 it's better to rise it up.

It was tough alright but lots of great play as well. I watched the match last night but not the analysis after it. What did Peter Canavan do to get a straight red in the 2nd half? He had just come on and there was a big melee where he had his shirt ripped off the back but I couldn't see what (if anything) he did to get the red. He didn't argue with the ref so maybe he was guilty of something.

Took him clean out of it.

Some amount of "throwing" the ball in that game!

They must have stopped allowing handpassed goals after that year. The poor goalie had no chance when lads were throwing the ball into the net!

I think he has an all Ireland club championship from 83 with his club.
Solid keeper - appearances can be deceiving. The year they lost out to Kilkenny was their real chance of a title.

Didn’t realise the GPS game was on. That act was so buried by the media it was a joke. I’d still rate it over either of last years though.

He was, as was the Offaly goalie Jim Troy. It wouldn’t happen now of course but it was quite common back then.

I forgot how easily Antrim won the match. It was a fine Antrim team and they nearly beat Kilkenny 2 years later.
