I thought TG4 were showing the Joe Mc? Nothing on the EPG, very disappointing if it's only streaming

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,848 ✭✭✭Brian017

The Leinster Minor Final is being streamed as well.

The picture is definitely poorer on the YouTube steam for me than it has been on any previous game.

How do they televise every game but Kerry Mayo when its the most interesting ?Why is the super 8s clashing with hurling QFs?

Can Croke Park get their act together, poor stuff

Kerry-mayo is been shown on rte 1 as far as I know with the hurling on rte 2

Firstly, Kerry v mayo is not the most interesting game for many gaa folk.

Secondly, RTE have that game listed for RTE 1.

I'm a Donegal fan, but this would be a very clear second in games I want to see this weekend whether they were in our group or not. Its been a great rivalry in recent years, I can't think of many gaelic football fans who would switch away from this one. Hurling snobs don't count

Poor enough viewing figures there but don't think we should expect the english to just start watching it because it's on Sky.

With figures like that will they even bother renewing the deal?

Is it not the Irish viewing figures that they will be more interested in?

I've said it a hundred times.

It's not about viewing figures it's about subscription figures.

If Sky believe that enough subscriptions are being retained during the summer due to their GAA coverage then they will continue to renew the deal.

If the GAA believe that the presence of GAA on the biggest satellite network in Ireland and the UK is good for promotion then they will continue with the deal.

I dont imagine that there is much demand for Kerry Mayo down in the Dog and Duck especially if it clashes with the cricket.

There's no evidence to show that it's done anything for the promotion of the game outside Ireland. It's buried away on SS Arena with no promotion whatsoever.

As for money, TV3 at the time were offering similar money to sky but the top brass chose to ignore that and take it behind a paywall. Now Virgin have switched attention and bought up the rugby and champions league so there isn't even competition to go up against sky.

You're right Tod. I'd get rid of sky sports in May after the soccer only for the gaa coverage on sky.

They are on the second contract between Sky and the GAA
So when it was renewed I'm guessing both parties were happy with the way the first contract went.

We will see what happens at the end of this contract.

I'm not sure either how you measure whether the contract has helped the promotion of the game outside of Ireland.

Was wondering myself :) And the thing is, none of us really know what kind of figures, subscriptions etc that Sky will be happy with

Promotion of the games outside Ireland is a laugh. The games overseas always was and always will be restricted to the emigrant centres. There is some development in the English cities where there are Irish teachers and they bring the games to schools as part of a wider communiity programme but thats it.
The Sky deal is about one thing, Money.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,927 ✭✭✭threeball

If theres only 6000 watching a knockout game between Mayo and Galway in ireland i can only imagine theres less than 500 watching in the UK. The Irish figures are pathetic so there's no promotion happening here or there.
Headquarters are killing the game with everything from games development, to funding, to fixtures and promotion. If they were a company they'd be heading for bankruptcy in short order.

Its 6,000 in the UK, not in total

And whatever about promoting the game abroad, at least Sky promote it in Ireland, bringing intelligent, positive analysis for games, and they actually showed the earlier rounds of the football championship. They're not perfect, but they currently do more for the game than RTE do anyway

It has been mentioned more than once that the Sky deal when first signed was only slightly more valuable to the GAA than the previous TV3 deal.

So the GAA were looking at it from the exposure point of view.
Getting you games on the dominant satellite network in a nation of 50m+ million people during the soccer off season is not trivial,

How that has translated into real interest in the game I don't know and I agree with you that the majority of GAA interest overseas is certainly with the immigrant community and schools.
The South London Feile team a few weeks ago (runners up in the Div1 Cup) is a example of how it has worked in schools.

But the reality is that after the first deal both the GAA and Sky were willing to renew it.
So from a Sky POV they must be seeing the desired economic return in retained subscriptions and from the GAA POV they must have been seeing something from a promotional POV.

The worst case scenario for GAA fans if Sky are not involved in the next deal and Virgin Media get involved and stick them on Virgin Media Sport, a channel that is not very widely available, does not have much content worth watching, and is very expensive relative to what one gets.
