I can get that for my 2001 Ford Puma?

I doubt it. they seem to insist the cars cannot be jap or too "normal"
mk1 golf, mabey, mk3 golf probably not.

AXA said the car MUST BE 25 YEARS OLD

Anyone got anything decent lately? I have a 1998 Civic, 2 years ago i paid 750, 900 last year and now its gone up to 1450. I have rang 15+ companies and only one would quote me and that was close to 2000.

I have been with axa a number of times, and was with them last year with my 19 year old car, but they simply may not want to insure you. the cars they will cover also seems to change depending on who's applying.

Insurance in this country is compulsory, you have to have it.

Tell them they have to quote you, they don't have a choice.

If they wont, demand a refusal letter, if you get 3 of these letters the Declined Cases Committee of Insurance Ireland can force one of the companies to insure you.

Yeah probably for 2K, a lot of hassle to end up right where he is right now.

96 BMW cabrio, 610 EUR - renewed last month, 16% increase
96 Toyota Hilux Surf, 520 EUR - due to be renewed in September

Looking at some of the quotes I feel very lucky. I've alway found Axa good, I've been with them for 12+ years

I think Allianz are one of the companies with the 15 year rule.

My car has 7 owners, previous owner kept 'selling' the car due to not declaring it off the road for tax reasons.

If the car is road legal, your current insurers are obliged to put it on cover for you (minimum 3rd part cover). Persist & complain

I've never heard of that rule before. I'm completely baffled about that one.

I was thinking to put mates name on it and drive under 3rd party extension( they have no problem with that one :eek: ) and switch cover to my wifes car but my wifes car is already insured...Im stuck as f@ck

Is that not fronting, and I thought they do have a problem with it.

I think I would challenge the 6 driver rule and raise it with the ombudsman. Its probably just another means to stop old cars and scammers.

If it's a jap import celica, then you will have trouble insuring, most companies no longer cover them for new business. As you are changing details of cover, they can refuse to cover if it doesn't meet their underwriting rules. (The 6 owners referecne, no idea where they are getting that from & should not be an issue)

Try autoline as they are currently the best for covering Celica's. (A lot of the Celica club members have used them for good quotes, they cover both north & south of Ireland - but do have some terms & conditions)

I'm looking at buying a Megane convertible. Its 2000 reg and I just want it for the summer. Who is covering cars this age?

    Axa No
    Campion No
    Autoline Maybe

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

Autoline. Not cheap. Must have normal car.

First Ireland. Cheap. Don't need normal car insurance in your own name. But only for existing customers, not for new business. AIG (underwriter) says no.

Not sure how easy it will be to convince any of them that a Renault Megane is a classic car though ;)

Try simply insure.ie. They were the only brokers that would come within miles of my 19 year old car and were cheaper, though still crazy expensive. Compared to my yoke a Megan should be far cheaper.

Do u plan to have 2 cars for 1 Policy?

How did u word quote with axa. ?
Did u say u want temp cover for few weeks or did u say it's a car that is declared off the road during non-summer months ?

    I've a 1999 SAAB LPT 2 litre

BOI that I currently use offered renewal for €850

First Ireland - €3459.57 third party only LOL
First Ireland - €2008.40 comprehensive LOL

Simplyinsure - unable to quote, for some reason

    Britton - €1067.66

Allianz - their webpage says ""Car cannot be more than 15 years old"

Liberty - €810 with added partner and TPFT (and 10% off for buying online)

Check that fire or theft don't effect NCB and that step back NCB in-place

RSA refused me and I was already with them and had been with them for three years so was disappointed with them. Mine's a 1995 btw. I ended up with AXA eventually. Online won't work, it's going to take time to ring all of them up. Brokers seems to charge more but do give quotes alright.

I'm guessing you should be ok then, as long as you know the usual, points, NCB, etc. 02 is not really that old compared to a 95 so good luck :)

Ok heres one for the books..

I rang bank of ireland this morning, she said she will check what the price increase would be for me going from a 2003 peugeot 607 2.0HDI(107BHP) To a 2002 VW Passat (130)BHP.
She comes back a min later and informs me after the switch, THEY will actually owe me 65 euros!! was totally delighted with myself lol :)

So there ya go, bank of ireland seems to be the way to go for older cars :)

Two years ago, I paid €430 (actually slightly less IIRC) to insure my 320i 2.2L. Yesterday I got a renewal quote for €1076, a roughly 150% increase in two years. Full NCB and I'm well past any age that could be even vaguely construed as boy racer territory. The car is in great condition for its age, not a squeak or ratttle anywhere and has passed all NCTs first time. Yet because it's 16 years old, I suspect I will have very few options available to drive that renewal down into more reasonable territory.

It's nice that someone is doing their best to make me feel young, I just wish it wasn't insurance companies!!

I got a renewal on my car insurance from 530 to 650. Not so bad. Out of curiosity i tried other companies and they all bar one were above 1100.

The car is a 2001 gti 1.8t golf. NCT and in v good condition so its a pain in the ass getting such high quotes. Im expecting a big jump next year.

It's a bad job when you give a sigh of relief from a 100 increase isn't it

I'm not, so I'll give it a go...

** EDIT ** About €200 less than my renewal, still a jump of a couple of hundred on last year's policy but at least I have something to bargain with going back to my own lot, thanks.

Struggling in a big way to get insured this year around on an 00' Toyota Avensis - tried FBD, Bank of Ireland, 123.ie, Aviva and pretty much everywhere wouldn't even quote me, and AXA were the only ones to give me a quote of about 1400 for Third Party insurance. That's nearly three times what I paid with Bank of Ireland last year.

Any ideas on any other avenues to try?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,554 ✭✭✭CyberGhost

I am considering a 2000 Micra. Haven't driven in couple of years, so back to 0 NCB. I tried several insurers and quotes I got are in the range of 3500-4000.

Anybody in the same situation? What are my options? I did not get quoted this much when I was learner and had no experience or NCB at all.
