9.3c and no wind here at the moment. It seems a mild new Year is in the offing,

the next 2 weeks will certainly be mild most of the time with low to mid teens at times, a few cooler days here and there. There are hints that the final 2 weeks of January may bring in some much needed high pressure but that's along way off.

Much the same here, grey drizzly muck and low visibility for the past couple of days, finally seems to be clearing this morning

The PV always breaks down at some stage - what we don't want is a re-run of last year with stupid warmth all winter leading to a cold chilly May/June:(

That frustratingly seems to have been the theme of the past decade, very little cold weather during our winters but once March comes around any sign of warmth disappears and we end up with a 5 or 6 month long winter

I'd put money on January beginning a degree or two above the norm with overnight temperatures only dropped close to freezing toward the last week. And predominately dry until the end of January.

the dryness is certainly something we can benefit from with 4 months worth of deluges to dry out! I'm still hopeful for proper cold showing up in February, fingers crossed. Even if it's just for 2 or 3 days.

yep very little snow anywhere in Europe over the next week or two. Best chance of seeing some wintryness over the next 2 weeks would appear to be in Greece or Turkey yet again. Scandinavia and eastern Europe may start to cool down mid January, while remaining mild over western Europe.

My Palm Trees are loving it!

I see MT (under his other name Roger J Smith) on UK Netweather, is forecasting a Central England Temperature average of 7.4oC for January 2020 - if that materialises, it would be the warmest January on record, after 1916.

So for Irish snow and cold lovers, it looks like the veritable horror show that is winter 19/20 will continue unabated...........

Played a round of golf today. Great to be out of the house after Christmas.

Whatever about people being disappointed by the absence of cold weather, it was a real pleasure to be out on the fairways in 12c with dry but blustery conditions.

I dont understand What's horrible about being able to go out, about and do things
Snow and freeze is not our climate, never was never will be
If you long for that, head to the artic but you'll find yourself coming home soon enough when you get fed up not having what you take for granted at home
If you just want snow every few weeks, without sacrificing your home comforts, head for high ground ,rent a cottage up above 300 metres near a mountain ,there are a few.Sorted

I'm just happy it's dry. Could care less about snow or cold at the moment.

Thankfully it remained dry in this part of Mayo also today. Was a great afternoon for a walk alright. Blustery here this eve but loved the break from the rain and drizzle.

Europe has been so mild this winter. Likes of Germany Poland have been up around +10 degrees. Even parts of Scandinavia have been consistently over 0 most of the winter. Really bizarre how mild the continent is. If that’s the case then Ireland and UK have no hope

Sad state of affairs. February could well be the month when Europe gets icy

New yrs eve 2009 about an hour or so before welcoming in 2010 got fairly heavy snow ,so welcomed in a white new yr. Magical it was.

Snowcover stayed and being topped up at times until around jan10th or so.

Yes that was amazing!! I didn't have much interest in the weather at the time so didn't know it was even meant to snow. Remember watching some new years eve show and walking out to the kitchen to get champagne and thinking it looked very dark in there, look up and see the skylights covered in snow! Couldn't believe it, not often in Ireland you'll be surprised by a perfect blanket of snow outside your door

No March and April is when cold will hit Europe

Its like the weather is gone on holidays for Christmas after all the storms and rain before

The amount of cloud in Cork is miserable. There has been no sun at all, of any description, for days.

Admittedly this was during the maunder min, but .:::

../The winter of 1697-98 was severe in England.
On 25 November, the ice was 3 inches think in London.
But in December it was so warm that people could not bear their bedclothes.
Then there was a snowfall 12 inches deep.
In January, there were great snowfalls and deep drifts.
Towards the end of January, the ice on the water was 8 inches thick.

Personally, I am ok with mild for Xmas, people can travel and get to/from home.
Though watching MTs forecast it maybe a mild winter, though I do love snow when we get it :-)

The eastern half of Europe will probably ice up. There may be the occassional close flirting with the eastern UK and a few 24 hour quick shot northerlies for us. Having said that there has been winters before with Atlantic driven muck all the way from November to January and then February strikes with white gold magic. Hopefully that will happen this year. I'm probably going to take a break from the charts over the next few days then come back after new years day with hopefully some promising looking patterns to look forward to towards the end of January.

It all ready has started to cool down in eastern europe -7 and snowing the last 48 hours in the part of Poland my my wife is from

Pity you cant get out and enjoy the mild weather after a few days stuck in the house with the kids. Couple of good guests in that breeze all day .

Models not showing quite the blowtorch pattern of late this morning - We might manage something closer to the seasonal norm soon enough (7 days +) and maybe something more interesting in the extended outlook (10 days +) ... Hopefully not just a blip

Its nicer to have +14c with some occasional sun though than +7c and occasional sun

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,239 ✭✭✭Jimbob1977

I was on Dun Laoghaire Pier at 9.30pm last night.

The temperature was still 12.5c. Rather unusual for almost mid-winter. The breeze was mild.

Remarkably, Chicago smashed a 26th December record with +16c. Normally it would be around -10c.

Not if it means temperatures struggle to get into double figures in March/April/May as was the case in many areas of the country in the year just coming to an end.

Same thing happened this time last year. If I remember correctly there was little or no sunshine in Cork from around the 22nd December 2018 till around the 10th January 2019.

Yes in October, not mid winter. Sure what’s the point of actual seasons if it’s 14oC all year around? You can’t enjoy the warmth if you haven’t experienced the cold........

No one is looking for EMMA Part II. However a couple of weeks of arctic weather every winter isn’t much to ask for (just like some Spanish heat in summer). And as everyone knows you can never bet against snow in Ireland .........

If that’s what your looking for every winter and every summer, you really are in the wrong country :)

Yup. These lovely southerly airflows are good for temperature but drag in mountains of thick cloud.

early to mid June was definitely colder than this mild spell. I remember some very wet days where the temperature struggled to get past 9C. Most of June struggled to get above 14C until the final week. I do not wish for a similar June again next summer.

Really great day here in Tralee. Got up to 15.6C with good levels of winter sunshine in a steady brisk SSW'ly breeze and had some elongated Lenticulars parked in the lee of the mountains near me for the day. The land is drying out nicely, got a few overdue jobs lined up over the next few days so will be availing of the benign conditions.

    Still very mild at 13.6C.

Another lovely family day spent outdoors.

Weather wise great Christmas. Mild, very little rain + surprisingly very little wind.

    Sunset was unreal this evening.

Dark, damp and dreary all week on the Donegal coast with intermittent rain and drizzle, apart from the lower heating bills nothing much to write home about here

Did anyone else not get the fierce wind chill today? Despite it being mild, felt much colder in the breeze.

    North Kildare.

Had a car temp reading of 16C on the high M50 around Edmonstown at 9.15pm. Of course they aren't accurate enough to quote, but in darkness and after travelling north to around Blanchardstown I was getting 13C at the same time 13C was recorded at nearby Phoenix Park, I don't think my 16 was too far off. Remarkable.

If I recall correctly, it was very dry around New Years last year too. Dry for around 10 days. I cant remember if it was as mild as it is now but I do remember people cutting the lawn in early January 2019.

It was grey and cloudy alright for the most part in Mayo today. Here are just a couple of snaps that I managed to take just below the cloud line on my way up and down the Reek today. No views at all in the cloud on top but at least it kept dry and days like today are good for getting out and about in.
