Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Always wanted to pick up a decent DSLR and this has me very tempted. Seems really good at that price and with only 10 left in stock I'm not sure what to do. It's a toughy. Anybody gotten photo examples?

As someone who got my own first DSLR a few months ago I'd recommend this great value tripod from Amazon and I went for this case.

I know the case is more expensive than other options, but it's a well-known brand with space for lots of stuff inside (one or two more lenses) plus has a waterproof cover etc.

The tripod may not be as perfect as a hundred quid job but for that price you can't complain! I'm 185cm and it can go up to or above my eye level.

I'd also recommend investing in a spare battery - I've found a cheap ebay one does the job grand.

For anyone looking for a course it's also worth keeping an eye on http://www.dealpage.ie/ each day to see if there are any cheap ones going. They crop up every now and then. At the moment livingsocial have a Cork-based one on offer. I bought the Dublin night-tour one myself earlier this year to try my hand at long exposure shots, but probably would have been better to start off with a basic course!!!:)

buy a hama filter and you won't go wrong. it will also protect your lense as well as filtering.

Try and find some like minded people near you and go out shooting with them. You will learn loads and it will encourage you to get out.

I've only owned a DSLR for 2 months but found a local, informal, camera group and gone out with some of them umpteen times in those few weeks and have learnt loads, even though I'm still much a beginner. Even going out for an evening with 3 or 4 people and not getting any decent shots is still very enjoyable.

YouTube is great as well for learning. But just get out and start taking shots and learn as you go. I've had a fantastic 2 months with my camera(as has my wallet!) so far and am wondering why I didn't buy one sooner. :)

The 1.8 50mm is undoubtedly the best investment you will make for this camera, as working with a prime will teach you about depth of field control, the prevention of facial distortion etc. Plus it will deliver stunningly sharp shots that go far beyond the price point.

Also: If you're looking for a walkaround lens that can deliver both wide angles and good longer focal lengths for portraits, whilst still being able to deliver nice shallow depth and field, the Tamron f2.8 17-50mm is another excellent investment.

Damn this thread. It's kickstarted my want/need for a DSLR camera. Should of really went for the 1100D though. Really good price, so I'm keeping my eyes peeled for another deal like this.

Is it worth paying the extra £5 for the sansdisk extreme or Lexar professional 400x over a sansdisk ultra sd card? (All 16gb) Would a novice like myself notice any difference between the cards?

Any recommendations for a decent bag for the camera?

I thought the only difference between them is the transfer speeds when copying files etc. A better brand would be a bit more reliable too such as Sandisk, but in terms of the actual camera I don't think it makes a difference. I'm no photographer so I could be wrong but I thought the better the Class, the faster you can copy the files.

Best of luck with it DubDJ.. once you start taking a few shots, you'll be hooked.

Was all set to try and get some shots last night of the super moon.... but couldn't see it at all with the clouds last night in Sligo. Was gutted! :(

I was thinking the same last night. It's been outside my window the past two nights and looked amazing. Perfect opportunity to test out a new DSLR.

Will do .I have the seller added to favourites. When I logged on to ebay there was 6 available. Then I refreshed and they were all gone in about a minute:

Quick question about using parcel motel for this (in case it comes back again):

Do I need to set both my ebay and paypal address to the PM one in Belfast? I've used PM before but not for ebay only amazon.

    Thanks!

As long as your Paypal shipping address is Parcel Motel (as below on Paypal receipt), you should be fine..

I wonder will ebay let me confirm the purchase if my address is in Ireland and it only ships to UK. I'll probably just set both to the PM address to be safe.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,359 ✭✭✭DubDJ

With PayPal you actually can't change your country of residence once you've set up your account. So your not able to add the Parcel Motel address to your PayPal account. All you can do is add it to your eBay. I did that and still have my normal address on PayPal. On eBay I selected the Parcel Motel address I added and it's down as shipping to that on the PayPal receipt.

No, you definitely can have multiple addresses on Paypal including those not in your country of residence.

Can I change my PayPal address to another country?

No. Due to banking regulations, you can not change your address to a country that is different from the country you used when you opened your account. If you're moving abroad, you’ll need to close your existing account and open a new account. If you maintain residences in 2 countries, you can have 2 PayPal accounts as long as only one is a Premier or Business account. https://www.paypal.com/ie/webapps/helpcenter/article/?solutionId=10475&topicID=11400024&m=TCI

You're only adding a delivery address.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,359 ✭✭✭DubDJ

I tried adding a new delivery address yesterday and it wouldn't let me change the country to the United Kingdom.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 15,116 ✭✭✭✭RasTa

You change your address before you pay going through the eBay checkout.

  • Registered Users Posts: 987 ✭✭✭psicic

    Yeah, in case it helps:
    1. You don't go to add new address in Paypal - it won't allow the UK address
    2. When you click 'buy it now' or 'pay for item' on eBay, you go through the eBay checkout.
    3. Here you get a choice of what address to use. (OR, as in this case, an error message saying the product can only be delivered to the UK - please input a new address).
    4. Enter the UK address as per Basq's instructions above
    5. This will transfer accross to Paypal - and you now have your UK address to use via Paypal whenever you want

For anyone interested in quality of the photos.. am putting together a portfolio website (still early days yet.. no logo etc.) but there's about 10 - 11 photos up there.

    Brian Basquille Photography

Am hardly using it to it's full potential yet but took about 50 photos over 10 - 15 minutes walking around the house before dinner, and got a few decent shots. I'll get more selective in time but that's what I kept out of those 50 or so.

    Particularly like the spider-web shot:

Really great shots Basq and absolutely love the website design. Is that a template you used or from your own design?

Didn't expect the shots to look that good tbh. Is this your first time at photography? Also are you using just the standard lens or is it the one you bought via Flubit?

Thanks DubDJ. It's a Wordpress theme... I do web-design but am first and foremost a Wordpress fiend, and it's a theme called TheAgency (doing lots of modifications to it though.. the theme is more for a portfolio and not single shots but I'm proficient in PHP so it's a mixture of theme and custom work).
    DubDJ wrote: »

Yep.. first time at it. These were all taken using the AV (Aperture priority) setting, so aperture is chosen by myself but shutter speed is chosen by the camera... yeah, think that's it. Still trying to finish 'Understanding Exposure' but think that's the gist of it, though I'm open to correction.
    DubDJ wrote: »

Nope, this is the standard 18-55mm lens kit supplied with the camera actually.

Am expecting the 50mm tomorrow.. but the lens kits is more than capable of getting some good shots.

It gives me hope seeing how well some of the shots have turned out for you and you've only got the camera a few days. I hopefully can manage getting the hang of things in the coming months. Gonna jump on that book too, seems highly recommended online.

There's gonna be a lot of new photographers around Ireland thanks to your Bargain Alert. And thanks for the tip, gonna check out that WP theme. Looking for something along the lines and have the web hosting ready to go. Thanks again, you've been really helpful throughout the thread.

Probably 98% of shots I took on Friday evening after I got the camera were horrid.. read the few chapters of 'Understanding Exposure' and got the basics and some of the terminology and it made a huge difference.

Now I still ditched 80% of the photos I took this evening, but it's definitely making a difference.

I've thought myself a little basic web editing in the past, and also used WP and found it pretty straightforward so i'll be ok hopefully, but thanks very much for the offer.

Your definitely getting the hang of it by looking at some of those pics. I thought it would take months to get to that stage. Gonna order some of the DX stuff you mentioned earlier too. Should have them sometime in 2014 :D
