Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Hi, i've been told by two electricians that my boiler or gas meter must be earth bonded, as must my hotpress. My house (20 yrs old) doesn't have earth bonding like this. They haven't been out to survey yet.
the gas meter is a few inches from the earth point, so thats easy to address, but the hotpress is in the middle of the house and the attic is converted, that is not easy to fix without trunking or lifting boards
There is an immersion that is earthed ...
Anyone know if this is a hard requirement to get fixed, or can the electrician install with recommendations to fix (seai grant applied for) ?0 -

Post to the electrical forum. You'll get a more definitive answer there, bearing in mind there are new regulations being rolled out this year.
AFAIK, when a new circuit is being added and a cert being provided they have to ensure the rest of the wiring is up to regulation and earthing is an important part of that, so if two have already independently given you the same answer it is probably where it is at.
Ultimately you wont get the grant unless you can get an electrician to give you a cert. The SEAI dont care about anything else other than that cert.0 -

This is safety. More of an issue if kitchen sink needs to be earthed, and there is none nearby.
I think they need to earth gas at boiler, not meter, hot press immersion earth will probably do, attic is typically plumbed to hot press so running a wire following the pipes up and across is not that difficult. I doubt it is more than a couple of hours extra work. Typically these days they would also test main earth connection for the house too. I think its a simple safety update.0 -

I know that and that’s the route I went but he wants a supply and fit service. All in one shop.
He's making it hard for himself so.
He should buy it himself online with a recommendation from you and then find his friendly local spark to install a "32A outdoor socket".
If he limits himself to "specialist EV charge point installers" he will be waiting and paying through the nose!

I'm in the same situation. What puts me off when it comes to generic electricians are the stories where the inexperienced (with SEAI) installer forgets to put in the date into one of the fields on the form, or puts it into the wrong field, etc, etc, etc... And then it's a back-and-forth with SEAI for the foreseeable future 0 -

I'd wager these stories largely eminate from the EV Charger Charge Point Install specialists.
It's really not that hard to fill in the few resistance values, MPRN & simple details, on the documents required for the SEAI grant.
It really implies generic electricians are volts, sorry, dolts

Actually my experience with the home charge point grant process was nothing but chaos so far (still before getting a letter of offer), so I fully believe these stories
The EV purchase grant went through fast and smooth, so I'm surprised about the chaotic nature of this other process.0 -

Apply for grant in your parents house.
Get it installed.
Change of address back to your own house.
Now your parents have a subsidized charger for you to use when there and makes their house more appealing if selling

It’s a weird one as he could probably get into trouble for accepting the “tip”. He is contracted by a semi state company so it could go against the code of ethics etc
I know I can’t even accept a bottle of wine at Christmas from my “clients” as all it takes is one for me to loose my job.
Suss him out on the day. Offer him all the tea he needs and see if you get a vibe from him that €20 for a bottle of Prosecco for his other half won’t go astray 0 -

Cool thanks makes sense, normally if I have someone around the house doing something and they do a good job I like to give them something
