I had almost forgotten about gyms it seems like so long ago I was able to go, but it looks like there's a good chance they could be open next week. When they opened again in July I was down there at 630am to beat the maddening crowds and it was so great to be back, I hope I can do the same next week again. Fingers crossed.

Country is going to Level 3, so yeah, they'll be opening again.

I wouldn't take anything for granted yet, in the current climate

just seen ben dunne aren't doing a time slot booking system. is that common? the gym i was with had a booking system and temperature check on the way in. no mask wearing being enforced tho which was disappointing.

can't ****ing wait tho tbh, been missing the gym so much

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,065 ✭✭✭j@utis

That's weird about ben dunne because controlling numbers in the gym should be the top priority, or I should say, one of the safety measures that can be implemented 100%.
    <...>
I’ve gained a serious amount of weight now, and I wasn’t light to start with. If I’m exercising regularly, I feel well enough to have the mental energy to eat healthily. But now, it’s just a diet of junk and I’ve swapped using exercise as a release for comfort food. (I’m not going to stop using food as a coping mechanism either, because that’s something for me and a therapist to unpack and I’m not in a position to start therapy right now.)<...>.

This! I'm surprised with myself how disinterested in diet I become when there's no exercise in my life. Cardio isn't cutting it anymore, I did cycling last lockdown and it kept me going for a while but it did nothing to my strength levels and when I got back into the gym last July, I had to start from 0. Dong nothing this time. I'm not in the happy place.

Troll. FYI, you should say "keep hospitals closed" instead because they're the real hotspots.

Really looking forward to getting back into the gym next week. I'll be one of the first in the door first morning!

I wished they would have opened sooner. Usually takes me 6 weeks to get back into the swing of things. I'll be looking like a sack of spuds over Christmas.

Looking forward to hopefully having our work gym open again. It'll allow me to train on my break. As it stands I'm having to get up at 0530 to train at home, and really - I need all the beauty sleep I can get, so this is not sustainable.

Level 3 obviously does not permit indoor exercise classes, even in pods, so I think that is a challenge for some businesses. I suspect a few businesses will not reopen until we are in level 2 its and they have some comfort we're not likely to be bounced back into lock down in January... Which I doubt will be forthcoming.

Westwood where I go had no booking systems anyway. I'm just going to try and go as early as possible to avoid crowds, it was getting pretty hectic at certain times during the last window of opening.

When they re-open, they need to remain open; this sporadic closing is no use to anyone: I'd rather they remain closed than open-close-open-...

Our gym has timetable up on the app but you can only book two days in advance, I'd be booking 14 sessions a week otherwise, things are getting desperate.

6 weeks! It took me 3months to get into it properly again last time, I only started seeing positive changes in my body after that long, so goodbye xmas party dress body this time, that's for sure :D

I really hope the gyms open next week and stay open this time.

My husband owns a gym in the city and his mental health has taken a serious nosedive this year with the stress. Which I'm sure is the same as all the other hospitality, service & retail providers being forced to shut/restrict business this year.

For sure. It takes me 6 weeks to notice anything in the mirror and about 3 months for anyone else to notice. Sack of spuds it is. Hopefully they stay open this time. This year has been a complete write off.

That'll play havoc with all the 'I'll start on Monday' heads.

In saying that, Tuesday is the start of a new month, so a good starting point also.

Have to leave the gym off until the following Monday so, benching on a Wednesday will throw out the whole week for me.

    Damnit NPHET.

Confirmation that restrictions get lifted on Tuesday morning rather than Wednesday ... https://twitter.com/gavreilly/status/1332082722626564100?s=19

Gavin's tweet is unusually unclear. I think he is talking about the second phase of lifting restrictions.

RTE, Irish Times and others are still reporting 1 December for gyms.

4 December (or later) for hospitality.

He corrected his mistake for gyms in a reply to his own tweet. Still the first.

Only for individual use is it? No classes.

Gov.ie says Gyms, leisure centres and swimming pools may remain open for individual use only

No classes. However, the government document interestingly and unusually says that swimming classes will be reviewed from January. Hence, it seems swim classes, but not gym clases, might be allowed resume in January.

Ya, makes reference to dance classes not allowed so I'm assuming gym isnt

God knows. The situation will be reviewed before 3 January.

Open from Dec 1 and how long depends on whether we go to Level 4 & above. Trigger for NPHET seems to be 400 cases a day, for renewed restrictions.

What about workout classes outside the gym?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,830 ✭✭✭Patsy167

Note to self - Don't be that guy that does everything on Day one and then is not seen back in the gym for a week due to DOMS. Happened to a friend the last time gyms reopened !!?:-)

Ugh. Really hope they don't do that in my gym. Grand gro lads who take two minutes between sets. Not good for me.

Sounds like a unilateral decision. We have a lot of space and strict numbers. Would be very disappointed if they went down that road.

The email announcing it mentioned the government announcement on mask wearing in busy indoor places, so it seems to be in line with that.

I've been watching videos of people lifting in American gyms and it seems like most people have been wearing them over there for months.

Yeah, well the US is a really poor example of a country dealing with the virus. No email nor any notification so far but have booked in for sessions as my app is now active again. Indoor mask wearing hasn't actually changed and it's really spaces that already had that requirement in Level 3 - the new thing is outdoors.

Well, the new guidance is that they are "recommended in crowded workplaces, places of worship and in busy or crowded outdoor spaces where there is significant congregation".

However, if numbers are being managed in a gym, then they shouldn't fit into the new guidance
