I think the major issue is the reflection off the bezel screen, combined with my ceiling lights. If you look at the shinobi picture above, that's typically what I'll get, fuzzy and out of focus.

My camera just has a really hard time focusing. If I took the screen off, Im sure it would look much better. But basically, what im seeing with my own eyes is not whats coming out on the camera.

    No big deal anyway!

Could someone kindly enlighten me on the above boards? What sort of system is that? Good value for money haul? Hard to get?

Not too versed in my arcade knowledge other than knowing of the likes of CPS2, Naomi, MVS etc.

the only one that can advise on good value for money is beejee but I guess he has done well. The boards his picked up run from about 60/70ish to 200 ish.
Most would be there own system ,shinobi system 16(sega) etc.
Hard to get, yes and no depending on what you want to spend but boards aren't flying around the place like they used to either rare or common.

Did more testing, getting through them bit by bit. I had a better look at that double dragon board, there was some guacamole around the cpu, bit of a clean of the board in general, and hey presto! Unfortunately, theres something wrong with the sound. The music and sound effects are all there, but a strange humming noise. Hmm!

A caveman ninja too, working fine :)

Got some decent pictures of this streetfighter 2 boot, scan lines and all for once! Its funny, the music is ALMOST perfect, but its missing that little something. That's what you get with a boot!

Below those is one of the cleanest boards ive ever gotten, a streetfighter 1, immaculate, very hard to tell from the pictures jut how minty mint it is. Not bad for 30+ years old :)

And lastly, a couple pictures of the actual game. I'll quit putting up these pictures for a while now, don't want to be spamming the thread.

There are multiple systems youre talking about here. If you take just one company like Capcom, they include cps, cps1.5, cps2, cps3 and more. Heres a link to the different systems below, and its not complete either.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arcade_system_board

So you can imagine how the value changes depending not only on the system, but the actual game itself. You can be talking the difference between "cant give it away" stuff like many of the older football games, to insane prices altogether, like 15'000+ for a taito Vertexer pcb.

Cabinets themselves are a different story altogether, some are serious money, some are near junk prices.

So, its almost like "how long is a piece of string?" You really just have to know your beans from your peas :P

Something looks off about that image, like it's got vertical crushing going on in a specific area of the screen...

I think Im seeing what you mean. The rope on the floor? Had a look at google images very quickly, and its strange! Some images of the stage show a perfectly "oval" rope, while others look like the picture I took, more staggered. Hmm!

I didn't notice anything wonky, only had one go of it though. Bear in mind im not adjusting anything for these games, some, like the double dragon, need the horizontal alignment done. Just really testing them, that's all.

I'd say its a geometry thing, look at the energy bars too, E.Honda's goes off screen, while Ken's doesn't. So for that board, I'd say vertical and hori geometry needs adjusting.

Man I remember the first time I saw SF1. It was amazing to see it after only ever seeing SF2. I saw it in the big arcade in Bray. The was a small room there with a few cabs. Man, it would be heaven to be in there now

I only remember seeing streetfighter 1 once, and the thing that stood out was the gigantic characters! It was the first time I had seen a one on one fighting game and I couldn't get over how big they were. Now, they actually look small, just compare the pics above between 1 and 2.

And bray was fantastic, an entire promenade of arcades. I went into one recently (the other end from dawsons), now a casino. Asked the Chinese girl about arcade cabinets...she looked like she was trying to compute nuclear physics listening to me, calls over some eastern European dude to help...he doesnt even know what an "arcade game" is, never mind something that was there decades ago. Might as well be talking to a wall.

    Its all different now!

Same here. Nothing like a double post spread of a bare pcb with all its edge connector on show.

Maybe a PCB owner pr0n thread is needed.

I finally got a Hudson SNES Multi-tap today in RAGE.
€50, which isn't cheap, but I had €20 credit with them, so just the €30.
Just as well I've a few Super Bomberman games to try it out with, at the next Beers maybe!

Haha yeah that 8 player MarioKart race the time I was in Cideys house was a disaster!
Myself and Ollie didnt know which screen we were on and possibly other players too.
A practice lap is a must, maybe then we would have some chance of beating Retr0! :P

I got a PSP Go yesterday. Spent a while setting it up with permanent CFW and some emulators.

There are some scratches on the screen so I might have a go at replacing it.
I saw a video on YouTube and it looks manageable. A replacement screen is under €20 on eBay.

Three bosses down in Aria of Sorrow, so I'm happy with it so far. :)
It's going to be a great little machine to keep in my bag or in the car.

I have Symphony of the Night and Klonoa Door to Phantomile somewhere so I must dig them up.

Just ordered a new overlay for my Veccy controller.
Following a repair some time ago, the original overlay was damaged but there is a seller called rwap_software that is on Sell My Retro and he/she is selling vectrex controller overlays for both the MB and GCE branded systems.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,780 ✭✭✭eddhorse

Yeah the screws are under the overlay arent they, silly

And that overlay is a difficult one to shift, maybe a heatgun would have helped.

Either way, it was a controller problem at the time, which turned out to be a controller and sound problem.
Borked component was not in the controller at all, but in a daughter board in the Veccy that looks after controls and audio duties, and when buggered loses both.

Still left with an ugly controller, soon to be sorted.

With the way the controller is stored on the front of the console with base of them on view - kinda makes sense to hide them on the top side under the controls overlay. Great that the issue has been resolved, more info as to what was up would be great

    AY-3-8912 chip was knackered.

Its primary job is the sound generator but also has two I/O ports which the Vectrex uses for the controllers, smart really as it cuts out the need for a separate I/O chip.
