Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I'm sure this has been asked already.
My NCT is up in early January 2021 and I clicked in there trying to get a test but it says my NCT is valid until May 2021.
So, if I book my car in for October will my cert say Valid until 10/21 because I'm exceeding the 90 day limit.

Yes once it's over 90 days it will be 1 year from the test date.

    Thanks,

I think I should have worded it better. Does my test expire in January as my disc says or in May according to website.

You obviously qualified for the 4 months extension so why would you want to do the test almost 9 months early?

I have somebody and they'll be doing a driving test in my car hopefully in the new year and they don't want to turn up with an expired disc.

That is an interesting one alright. I'm sure if you get your renewal date up again on the NCT site and print it out it will cover that scenario but you would be better off to get an official answer on it though.

Trying to book the NCT which isint due until November, and nothing available until December. Problem is, the car will be off the road for 4/5 months, well passed the expiry. Ill try and rebook as someone said earlier after 9:30!

Isn’t it legal to drive to the NCT in a car thats been declared off the road?

    Can I double check this.
My NCT expires on the January 2021.
When I click into the website it says my NCT is valid until May 2021.
If I get a dat for a test November or December will my my NCT be valid for a year from that date or will they give it to me from my January date?

I have a covid extension from September to January...question is ,after passing test in January does my test then expire in 12 months from time of passing or revert to original date September?

  • Registered Users Posts: 552 ✭✭✭sparksfly

Went to NCT Centre in Naas on Friday evening for part 2 of the "Dodgy Lift" test. Centre was closed due to a power failure. I was told to go home and re-book. I have just discovered they have charged my card for a missed test. There were loads of people waiting around, check if you are one of them.

12 months from January. If you did it 90 days before January it would be a year from that test date.

It will revert back to when the original expiration date was, in this case September.

Had my NCT done 2 weeks ago and this was the case for me.

Mine was due up in March, extended out to July. Had the test done at the start of September and the disk has July has the expiry date.

I'm in the same boat, no, if passed in January you'll only get a cert up to original expiry date. If you complete test within 30 days of original date (near impossible with delays) you'll get the standard 12 month cert.

If your test was due before we went into lockdown, your original date remains the same, if your test was due after 27th March it will have gotten the 4 month extension and that will be your new date going forward.
Say also for example your car was due mid January, what I would do is forget about the lift inspection if it’s already done, let it go past it’s retest date and book it in for a date within 90 days of its expiry, then you’ll get until January 2022. Example, expires 20th January 2020, full test 23rd October on a >10 year old car , passes, new expiry date is 20th January 2022.

Just to be clear, mine was due August 31st, now extended to December 31st, are you saying if I get my NCT done say in December, I'll get a full 12 months cert? I understand original expiry date of August would still apply, meaning I'll get a cert for 8 months? Thanks

If you do your test no more than 90 days before December 31st, your new cert will expire on December 31st 2021.

Folk who got an extension should forget what their original expiry dates were. They're history. No longer in any way relevant and have absolutely no bearing on things from here on.

No the guards know everything extended by 4 months
Mine was due in June and I was stopped in august and he never mentioned it as new date is October

You won’t have to show them anything.

But the stub will display an expired due date so they wont know the difference between a genuine lapse and the delay due to Covid.

NCT advising all their records have been shared with Gardai, they also advise, continuing display of current NCT cert, basically Gardai will be aware of extensions etc

mines due in the end of Oct. However when I go to the NCT site its prompting me to book January 12th 21 and that the due date is 01/03/2021

Whats the best approach here, do i need a new disc for upto 01/03/21?

No, if your NCT due date extended, that's it, there's no cert issued for extra few months, essentially if you book before new expiry date, your booking it early. As explained previously, Gardai have record of all extended dates and continue to display current disc. There really is no point in booking new NCT until nearer new expiry date.

Did you not get a not letter of deferral?

I didnt receive a letter no...im just confused its directing me to January and if I select oct im getting a warning message

"COVID 19 Extension Could Apply. If you continue with this booking then a VOLUNTARY EARLY TEST will apply and your test due date in the future will change to an earlier date."

    Forget your original due date
Your new date is now March
You don’t get any deferral letters or discs . If you book outside of 90 days of your new date it’s classed as voluntary test. You need to be looking at dates from end of January onwards
In essence everyone got extra 4 months added on to their current nct

Maybe it depends on individual settings on the NCT database. I got a letter about the deferral.

You can’t book without a debit/ credit card. - it’s deducted on the day - you don’t even need to show it when you arrive

If you are on the reserve list you can't pay in advance. You can pay on the day.

This must be the only centre that accepts cash, we're is it exactly? I understood no NCT centres handle cash payments and even to get a test it has to be booked online via debit/credit card? Even follow up requirements are charged to the card used when booking original test? Maybe its different for Trade but I'd be surprised, indeed my mechanic who normally runs mine through after yearly service has advised he can longer do this, I've to book test in advance

It's likely, level 5 pretty much shuts everything non essential down. Government reportidly not happy with the recommendations but it will be a brave politician to go against NPHET advice

Yes it will be closed down, on the plus side they will likely extend everyones by 4 months again.

I can't see any chance of a Level 5 coming in, absolutely zero case for it.

For what it's worth, the booking system is a nightmare at the moment, and there are very few slots available for a long time going forward.

Last week, I decided I'd better book in my Picasso as it's due for test in December, and the trade booking system that allowed for short notice bookings is not available at the moment.

I went on line to book it, and initially, there was nothing available before due date. Gave up looking, but decided I'd better see how thing were looking for my wife's car, which is now due in Feb. First date I got offered was Oct 6th, which is too soon, as anything before November would be seen as a voluntary test, and get dated accordingly.

Didn't book that, but decided that if October dates were available, I'd try and get that date for the Picasso. Went back in, and the first date offered was again in December, after expiry date of extended cert. No sight or sign of the October date that it had offered me only a few seconds earlier.

After trying about a dozen time, it eventually offered me the October 6th date for the Picasso, which I grabbed before it went away again.

Makes no sense to me that their system is working the way it is, if a slot is open, it should be offered regardless of the expiry date of the test on the vehicle that's being entered.

As for what will happen if we end up with another level 5 lock down, that's anybody's guess, the system is struggling as it is, another backlog of tests will not help things at all.

The good side is that the Picasso passed, so that's now not a worry till Dec 22, and the Seicento is booked in for early January, so as long as the test can be done then, there's time to sort out any issues if it doesn't pass, which is a possible, given the age that it is.

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

My NCT was up in July but I got the extension until October. I booked it anyway for July as I was thinking about selling, they were practically laughing at me bringing it in “early”. Looks like it was the right decision now. Donedeal is absolutely full of cars for sale without NCTs or with covid extensions which means they haven’t been tested in over a year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 553 ✭✭✭flower tattoo

I booked a test in a nearby county but checked the site every day and eventually a better date in my own county appeared so I swapped - a time even appeared for late on the same day I was checking .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,021 ✭✭✭✭Dempo1

Mine now deffered to December 31st but now worrying if I book will it be done with this latest level 3 and increasingly obvious move to 4 or 5 restrictions. Its a nightmare and perhaps proving the entire NCT, Driving licence and Driver testing systems are collectively not fit for purpose.

Back from NCT centre, took ages to get a slot and a lot of searching checking their site 3-4 times per day but was still nearly a month overdue.
9 lanes in Northpoint and only 5 cars being tested at a time, ridiculous, should be nearly 2 cars per lane. No wonder there's such a backlog and no availability within a few weeks.
